In this poem, the speaker observes the scenery flashing by from a railway carriage window. Due to the speed of the train, bridges, houses, and other sights are seen for only a tiny second before disappearing from view. The train moves so quickly that its speed transforms the landscape, making hills and plains appear as if in a rainstorm and station platforms resemble painted pictures fleetingly glimpsed as the train rushes past.
