Marjorie Ferguson identified four types of facial expressions commonly seen in the cover photos of British women's magazines in 1980: the Chocolate Box expression which projected a bland warmth; the Invitational expression which suggested mystery or mischief; the Super-Smiler expression which was aggressive and attention-seeking; and the Romantic or Sexual expression which projected availability. Trevour Millum analyzed male facial expressions in women's magazine ads and found parallels to Ferguson's female types including carefree, practical, seductive, comic, and catalogue expressions, but noted there were no direct counterparts to the narcissistic or kittenlike female expressions.
