Underpasses are safer than surface crossings for pedestrians and cyclists as they eliminate any interaction with motor vehicles. They provide a more direct route under roads without diversions. While surface crossings are often placed at intersections for cars, requiring pedestrians to go out of their way, underpasses can run directly under roads in the needed direction.
