6. What is the situation today?
I'll answer from an urban Indian's point of view. I don't know if this is true for
the entire country.
Dowry in urban India hides behind the veil of 'gifts' for the groom and the
groom's family, jewellery and how the wedding expenses are managed. Cars and
apartments for the couple are common. However, unlike gifts, they are
negotiated before the marriage is finalized, in the case of arranged marriages.
The amount of gold bought for the bride is also discussed and this amount can
be outright ridiculous.
For the groom's family, clothes are bought and hotel rooms are booked for the
wedding. In upper middle class India, dowry is a bit of a status symbol in some
circles.
However, the practice of men refusing for dowry has also become a lot more
prevalent among the same social circles.
With regard to dowry deaths the numbers have been steadily climbing over the
last 12 years.
So while some sects of society are definitely improving, India as a whole isn't.
