HISTORY OF DOWRY SYSTEM
HOW DID THIS PRACTICE ACTUALLY START:
● It all started with he rule imposed by the British which prohibited the women from owning
any property at all affected the status of the women in Indian society, and this was what
created the menace of the dowry system in India.
● During British rule women were prohibited from having any property rights, it meant that
all the wealth that a woman got from her parents would be owned by her husband instead.
● Slowly this system of husband owning the wealth of his wife was created, the traditional
dowry system got converted into a menace creating an institution of greed.
HISTORY OF DOWRY SYSTEM
● The greed that kicked in created a system where husband and his family started looking at
the incoming bride as a source of property and wealth.
● The social harmony and the bonding created by the institution of marriage was gone.
Marriage became just another business deal, where making wealth was easier.

SOLUTIONS
The solution/preventive measures aimed at curbing the dowry system are:-
● Education
● Making women self-dependent
● Gender Equality
● Initiating Mass Media Campaigning
● Government Initiatives
● Social Awareness Campaigns
CONCLUSION
● We can conclude that the practice of dowry is not only illegal but also unethical.
● Therefore, the conscience of society needs to be fully awakened to the evils of the dowry
system so that the demand for dowry itself should lead to ‘loss of face’ in society for those
who demand it.
● Also we can conclude that the majority of the women agreed that dowry is an evil but
some of them considered that dowey was not a big fault in our society.
