This document discusses the contribution of overseas employment to the Bangladeshi economy. It provides statistics on the amount of remittances received between 2010-2013, their share of GDP and foreign exchange reserves. It also examines the impact of remittances in reducing poverty and inequality, fueling domestic demand, decreasing dependence on foreign aid and spurring rural development. However, it also notes some of the issues faced by migrant workers abroad such as exploitation, lack of proper wages and living difficulties. Overall, remittances have emerged as a major source of foreign exchange and play an important role in the Bangladeshi economy.
