Informational Interviewing Guide Benefits of Informatio.docxcarliotwaycave
Informational Interviewing Guide
Benefits of Informational Interviewing:
• Get firsthand, relevant information about the realities of working within a particular field, industry or
position. This kind of information is not always available online.
• Find out about career paths you did not know existed.
• Get tips about how to prepare for and enter a given career.
• Learn what it’s like to work at a specific organization.
• Gain insider knowledge that can help you in writing your resume, interviewing, and more.
• Initiate a professional relationship and expand your network of contacts in a specific career field; meet
people who may forward job leads to you in the future.
Six Steps for Informational Interviewing:
1. Research Career Fields
a. Do some initial research on the career field or employer using internet and print resources.
2. Identify people to interview
a. Find people to network with through faculty, advisors, LinkedIn, Pioneer Connect (du.alumnifire.com),
family, friends, extracurriculars, athletics, clubs, volunteer work, members of professional
associations, etc.!
3. Prepare for the interview
a. Develop a brief introduction of yourself and your hopes for the meeting.
b. Plan open-ended questions to ask.
4. Initiate contact
a. Contact the person by phone, email, or LinkedIn message.
b. Mention how you got his or her name/found their profile.
c. Ask when they have time to talk for a few minutes.
d. Emphasize that you are looking for information, not a job.
e. Ask for a convenient time to have a 20-30 minute appointment.
f. Be ready to ask questions on the spot if the person says it is a good time for him/her and that s/he
won’t be readily available otherwise.
Sample Telephone/E-Mail/LinkedIn Script for Requesting an Informational Interview:
"Hello. My name is Jane Wilson and I'm a current [insert field of study] student at the University of Denver. I
found your information through my research on professionals in the [field/industry] industry. I have become very
interested in [industry/company] and would like to learn more about your work. Would it be possible to
schedule 20 to 30 minutes with you at your convenience to ask a few questions and get your advice on how best
to prepare to enter the field?"
5. Conduct the informational interview
a. Dress neatly and appropriately, as you would for a job interview.
b. Arrive on time or a few minutes early.
c. Restate that your objective is to get information and advice, not a job.
d. Give a brief overview of yourself and your education and/or work background.
e. Be prepared to direct the interview, but also let the conversation flow naturally, and encourage the
interviewee to do most of the talking.
f. Take notes.
g. Respect the person's time. Keep the meeting length within the agreed-upon timeframe.
h. Ask the person if you may contact them again in the future with other questions.
i. Ask for names of other people to meet so ...

Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

Editor's Notes
Put up role on paper
Job-seekers need to be highly competitive. Some of your colleagues or competitors who are working got it through a number of different options. Luck is a part, being in the right place at the right time is a part, but planning is critical to Suceed. And although getting emplyed is probably your primary goal right now, the strategies for how employees can improve their performance will help you also, again sooner rather than later.Next Slide - How can you benefit from this talk?
Who here can really say their CV created a really positive response from a stranger?Either way, no matter where it goes, the one and only thing you can be sure of is you’ve lost control of your application. So before you press send, think a bit differently about how you can get your cv noticed. Anyone use their ears when they are reading a job application. Might be worth looking at that - Covey’s habit, seek first to understand before being understood. As questions of audience? Do I really understand what this organisation is looking for and why are they recruiting? Does my CV send them an instant message as to what I can contribute for them? If I’m not sure, how can i get these answers.Example of style of recruiting, not so common here, but popular in the UK & US. Executive Search of Head Hunting. Eg. Lets say I am looking for an RF engineer..web, linked in, fb, database, network...still nothing. Competitors – draw out map. Ask for post room – looking for john in design – dont have a jon, have atom or billy or peter....thank you very much. Always a way of getting information. How do detectives get to solve cases – waiting for someone to come in and say – i did it?Next Slide. Case study based on your side of the table. How do you create that response?
Product Definition – if you don’t know it, how can you explain it let alone sell it. Would you buy something if you didn’t know what it did?Value add – some of you have degrees, some two, some none, now think of an apple on top of a box of oranges. Was it education, experience, adding value, all 3What made the apple stand out?Research – use your technical skills, your attitude and other traits that you have in you but haven’t used. Part of the brief in the recruiting game is exec search. Different to recruiting because its a no foal – no fee game. Exec search is differnt. I’m given nothing, and have to find people. Very interesting, cunning, deceitful, information gathering, knowledge acquisition, knoweldge gives me some control.Go to Market - have a consistent message across everyone you meet so there is consistency with what you are saying to people. You may to meet / talk to several people before the key decision maker.GE 22 pages of interview questions done for interviewNext Side intro where do jobs come from
Linked In- Keep updating your profile – write an article. Engage with someone in your target company. Get an introduction.Facebook - Don’t have pics that cause supicision or if you have a sense of humour that doesn’t resonate well with strangers.
Complete your Profile – 85% minimum (Users with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn!)
