Monumental inscriptions provide memorials for the dead by being carved into gravestones, memorial plaques, and other structures. They are placed there by family members or communities to honor the deceased and provide information about their lives and deaths, such as dates. Some of the oldest inscriptions include the Edicts of Ashoka from the 3rd century BCE, which were written in an early form of an Indian language in the Brahmi script. The inscriptions on the Pillars of Ashoka are also among the earliest deciphered examples.
