2. Introduction
What is Culture?
Culture is the collective programming of the mind
which distinguishes the members of one human group
from another.
Culture can be also be defined as pattern of basic
assumption invented, discovered or developed by a
given group as it learns to cope with its problems of
external adaptations and internal integration.
3. 1.Definition:
Indian Culture American Culture
Indian culture is the
traditional mindset of
people that reside in India.
It is the customs, tradition,
ceremonies, festivals,
religions of India.
Western culture started from
the Ancient Greece and
Rome, which then spread all
over the world under Roman
rule. It was then encouraged
by the European civilization
and now refers to modern
way of thinking.
4. 2.Origin:
Indian American
Indian culture is one of
the oldest cultures in
the world. The
traditions are several
millennia old.
Though according to
historical records,
western culture began
with Ancient Greece and
Ancient Rome, it is
considered as a modern
culture to many people.
6. 4.Language:
Indian American
Different states in India
each have different official
language.
Central government only
recognises Hindi as the
official language of India.
However, when doing
business in India, English
is the language of
international commerce.
There is no official
language of the United
States, according to the U.S
government.
While almost every
language in the world is
spoken in the united
states, the most frequently
spoken non-English
language are Spanish,
Chinese, French and
Germen.
7. 5.Family:
Indian American
Most people believe in
nuclear families.
Traditional people
usually prefer joint-
families, while modern
people are now living in
nuclear-like families.
8. •Unlike the Indians, the Americans plan things ahead.
The Americans believe in dominating nature and
controlling the world around them. On the contrary,
Indians believe in the harmony with nature.
•Another difference that can be seen between Indian
culture and American culture is that the Indians love
stability where as the American love mobility.
10. 7. Society:
Indian Society American Society
Society plays an active
part in a person’s life.
Every decision that a
person takes, reflects
what the society thinks
about it.
Society does not take an
active part. People take
decisions depending on
what they want, not
what the society thinks.
11. 8. Gender Equality:
Indian American
Women are still
considered unequal to
men though acceptance
westernization is
changing this idea.
9.Castes:
Still have various castes,
where one caste is lesser
than the other caste.
Women are equal to men
in society.
No such thing as castes,
all people are equal.
12. 10.Hierarchy:
Indian American
The social hierarchy
cannot be challenged.
Ex- Boss has final
decision.
Hierarchy can be
challenged at any point
by anyone.
13. ...
In another sense, it can be said that the American culture
is more goal oriented and the Indian culture is more people
or family oriented. Indians may even forsake their
individual wishes and also happiness for the sake of
families. But in American culture, this trend cannot be
seen.
