Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a tragedy about a Scottish general, Macbeth, who receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become King of Scotland. Driven by his ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. He then kills more people who threaten his rule, including his friend Banquo and the family of Macduff. Macbeth becomes an increasingly paranoid and tyrannical ruler until the rightful heir, Malcolm, returns from exile with an army and defeats Macbeth in battle, restoring order to Scotland.
