• BASIC COMPONENT OF COMPUTER
A computer device is made up of various elements which help in its
effective functioning and processing. There are five basic components of
the computer which help in making this processing of data easier and
convenient.
By definition, components of a computer system are the primary
elements which make the functioning of an electronic device smooth
and faster. There are five basic components which include:
• Input Unit
• Output Unit
• Memory Unit
• Control Unit
• Arithmetical and Logical Unit
OUTPUT UNIT
The Input Unit: Computer Input unit
means the device of the input and a part
of the computer hardware which is used
for the transport of the data processing
system involves the information devices of
the computer with the control and data
signals of the computer.
Example – Mouse, Camera, and
Keyboard
• Input unit controls various input devices which are used for entering
data into the computer system. Keyboard and Mouse, for instance, are
the most commonly used input device. Other such devices are
magnetic tape, magnetic disk, light pen, optical scanner, Magnetic Ink
Character (MICR) Recognition, Optical Character Recognition (OCR),
bar code reader, smart card reader, etc.
OUTPUT UNIT
Output unit refers to the output devices that are used
to communicate data from computers to users. These
include hardware that transmits data from computers
in a form that is understandable by humans.
Examples of output units are microphones, monitors,
printers, headphones, etc.12-Sept-2023

MEMORY UNIT
A memory unit is a small storage device
that holds a memory for a computer and
can be accessed through the software.
Memory units are typically used to store
the information of the programs. The
computer has two types of storage
systems: volatile and non-volatile.
CONTROL UNIT
• The control unit (CU) is a
component of a computer's central
processing unit (CPU) that directs the
operation of the processor. A CU
typically uses a binary decoder to
convert coded instructions into timing
and control signals that direct the
operation of the other units
(memory, arithmetic logic unit and
input and output devices, etc.).
ARITHMETIC
LOGICAL UNIT
ALU is a circuit in the CPU which performs
mathematical and logical operations using electrical
signals in 0s and 1s.
Arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is defined as a circuit board
embedded within a computer’s central processing unit
(CPU), which performs mathematical and logical
operations using gateways made of electrical
transistors that can convey signals in 0s and 1s.
