A sprain occurs when ligaments are stretched or torn, commonly in the ankle, while a strain involves stretching or tearing of muscle or tendon fibers, often in the lower back or thighs. Symptoms for sprains include pain, decreased movement, swelling, and tenderness, while strains may present with similar symptoms along with muscle pulls and spasms. The RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) is recommended for initial treatment, along with consulting a doctor if symptoms persist.
