Over 2 million people die each year from drinking polluted water, and 1.1 billion lack access to clean drinking water. Water quality varies greatly between countries; while the US treats water through coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection and storage, many countries lack purified water. An experiment showed salt water boils faster than tap water, and using a styrofoam cup prevents burns when boiling water for drinking in places without treatment facilities. Proper water treatment and disposal methods are needed to make drinking water safer worldwide.
