The Importance of Animal Rights
The Unfortunate Truth
• At the moment, there are estimated over 5 million animals
held in zoos worldwide.
• This means that over 5 million animals are taken out of
their natural habitat so that we can enjoy their presence.
• However, we really want to enjoy and appreciate these
animals, we should provide better conditions to ensure
their safety.
The Unfortunate Truth (Cont.)
• In addition to zoos, many farmers, that provide
meat, dairy, and hide, are guilty of unethical
treatment for their animals.
• Many of these farmers cram their animals in
small pens that are rarely cleaned. This is most
likely done to maximize profit with the space they
have.
PETA!!!
• PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals.
• This organization helps spread awareness and push for
freedom and ethical treatment of animals in captivity
• PETA also focuses on the abolishing the use of animals
in laboratories as test subjects. However, with new
legislation, this isn’t as big of a problem as before.
Animals Used In The Name of Science
• In addition, to the 5
million animals kept
in zoos, there are
another 26 MILLION
animals used for
experimentation.
• These animals are
restrained while the
scientists perform
agonizing
procedures on
Types of Animals Being Used
• We can see here that
mice,
Rats, fish and birds are
highly used
In research experiements.
On this
chart we can see they
make up 96%
of all the animals used
that year.
• That’s 25 million lives
we took in
just one category alone!!!
Silver Spring Monkey Case
• This was PETA’s first case against the use of animals as test
subjects for research experiments.
• This case involved 17 macaque monkeys, being taken from
their home and brought to Maryland to be tested on.
• In response, PETA began working undercover in the lab and
documenting the unethical treatment of the monkeys.
Celebrity Support
• PETA is not short of powerful supporters, in
fact they have over 100 celebrity followers.
Some are:
• Wendy Williams
• Lea Michele
• Ariana Grande
• Paul McCartney
• Ryan Gosling
PETA Appeals to the Audience
• Like any organization trying to achieve a goal, PETA has to draw in
followers. To do so PETA plays to our emotions.
• To do this, PETA, would use graphic images to provoke the
audience’s emotions and uses their sense of guilt to have them
change what they’re doing.
• Another way PETA plays to our emotions, is by directly blaming the
audience for the animal’s misfortunes. This will in turn evoke a
sense of guilt because we know what we’re doing is hurting the
animals, yet we’re still doing it
