2. WHAT IS AUTHENTIC MATERIAL?
 Using authentic materials is one of the mainstays of an imaginative
and motivating higher level course, but rarely features at levels lower
than intermediate.
 This is an unnecessary fear, as using authentic materials can be
rewarding and stimulating for both teacher and students.

When people first think of authentic materials they usually assume that

8. DISADVANTAGES OF USING AUTHENTIC MATERIALS
 Difficult language
 Uncomplex language structures needed vocabulary items
 Often too culturally biased, difficult to understand outside the
language community.

decoding the texts.

10. WHAT IS NON-AUTHETIC MATERIALS
Usually the non-authentic material does not have the characteristics
of real-life language. It typically consists of the linguistic items that
aim to teach or advance learners’ knowledge about the language. An
example of a non-authentic text is passages from textbooks that
were created by the authors to illustrate or practice new linguistic
items. The semi-authentic material tries to include the characteristics
of real-life language, but at the same time still focus mainly on
teaching and reinforcing the language goals. The latter includes
newspapers in easy Hebrew or edited stories.

11. CONCLUSION
As can be seen, using authentic materials is a relatively easy and
convenient way of improving not only your students' general skills, but also
their confidence in a real situation. This is only a brief introduction to the
ideas involved, but some of these ideas could easily be expanded to form
part of a motivating and effective course.
