Scientists have discovered the gene that causes gigantism by studying patients with acromegaly and a family history of the disease. They found that all patients had a mutation in the aryl hydrocarbon receptor interacting protein (AIP) gene. Researchers also found this same mutation in the DNA of an ancient skeleton. This genetic discovery will allow scientists to develop new drugs that target specific sites to treat diseases linked to these mutations.
