Photography challenged painters to find new forms of realism as photographs could quickly capture the material world. In turn, photographers looked to Pre-Raphaelite subject matter and techniques to legitimize photography as a fine art. Both photographers and Pre-Raphaelite artists grappled with how to observe and represent nature, the human face, and figure as photography questioned traditional methods of artistic representation.
