Pre-Political Dissent
Tumultuous Rock: the Culture of Dissent in the Music of Communist Czechoslovakia
"One of the highest aims of art is the creation of unrest" – Ivan Jirous
Longhairs, punkers, and the musical underground. In soviet Czechoslovakia, all of these groups
were part of a cultural revolution of rejecting societal norms and a movement of pre–political
dissent. Music is an emotive response to dissent, a form that is more of a way of being than just
ideological. The musical underground allowed citizens of Czechoslovakia to create a counterculture
movement without being inherently political. These people purely wanted the freedom to express
themselves and this idea of pre–political dissent was exemplified through the subculture of rock and
punk music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before the onset of normalization, rock music was not as regulated and often had public spaces for
musicians to play their music such as the Big Beat festivals. However after normalization, many of
these festivals were shut down, venues were scarce and bands had to requalify to the regime to be
allowed to play their music. Bands such as the famous Plastic People of the Universe were one of
the many trying to requalify. The problem was that many of the requirements of the regime in order
to be an official band was that you could not have an English band name. The Plastic People of The
Universe did not fit that description. The band name itself was almost seen as a dissent point for the
band, as they are named after a Frank Zappa song about the exasperation with phonies and
hypocrites of the system. The consequences of the Plastics not becoming an official band seemed at
first to set them back, as they had to return a lot of their government owned equipment and were not
allowed to release their songs. However, they soon discovered the musical underground and filled
the void that was left by the disbanding of The Primitives, and started to find their own space. A
turning point for the band was when Ivan Jirous aka 'Magor' became their band manager. Jirous was
a cultural dissident, a friend of Vaclav Havel, and was extremely involved with the political sides of
dissent of the time. Jirous influenced the Plastics to become more inherently political with their
music as they started to take poetry from Egon Bondy and set it to music and to play their music in
Czech and not English. Another turning point in the history of the Plastics and the underground was
the Budějovická 'massacre' on March 30th 1974. A country side concert turned police brutality, the
police brutalized hundreds of Czech youth who were there to see underground bands such as the

Courage To Dissent Summary
Courage to Dissent Atlanta and the Long History of the Civil Rights Movement Tomiko Brown–
Nagin Mr. Murray 374003 Tomiko Brown–Nagin, the author of Courage to Dissent, provided the
combination of informing the readers with the history of the court cases, and an insight on the
personal aspect. In which helps readers to learn and experience what was happening in the book.
The book takes place in Atlanta, Georgia and discusses the local discrimination that has been
continuing to occur against African–Americans. The author demonstrates excellent leaders who
fight for the equal rights for African–Americans. Tomiko's point of the book is to give insight on

US. Tomiko showed how being a demonstrator was a dangerous and serious act to take during the
mid–1963 and 1964. An example was Mardon Walker, a demonstrator, who was convicted in 1964
and given a heavy sentence by the Superior Court Judge Durwood Pye. In May of 1963 the Supreme
Court overturned sit–in trespassing convictions, but the legal doctrine of private property owners
being allowed to discriminate was not overturned. The suit was dismissed in 1962 from the NAACP,
because there was no law in Georgia requiring hotels to be segregated. However, city leaders
carefully guarded Atlanta's reputation as a moderate city. There are just somethings that can't be

Analysis : ' Your Dissent ' By Thomas Frank
Many Americans gather and tune into their televisions to take part of an annual tradition that's
decides who takes home the football championship– the Superbowl. This television program
annually commands the attention of the entire nation and captures an audience larger than any other
television program throughout the year. The game has become more than just an annual sports event,
but a well anticipated American tradition that initiates a sense of gathering. Advertisers are aware of
the monumental impact that the Super bowl has over consumers. As the result, advertisers spend a
respectable amount of time strategically planning in order to create content to capture the attention,
and manipulate the audiences that they intend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, many individuals began exploring drugs, music, and literature in order to find their own
self–identities. Advertisers begun seeing the shift in motivation in society so they reflected the
change onto their advertising strategies. Instead of promoting the usual conformed replicated
lifestyle they promoted individualism. Advertisers reassured consumers that they would surely find
the self–expression they were in search of within their products. This is evident within the "Forever
Young" Pepsi commercial where advertisers are promoting individualism and rebellion through the
image of rock 'n' roll legend, Bob Dylan. In his essay, Frank states, "We consume not to fit in, but to
prove, on the surface at least, that we are rock 'n' roll rebels, each one of us as rule–breaking and
hierarchy–defying as our heroes of the 60's..." (Frank 153). Bob Dylan revolutionized what it meant
to be a self–fulfilled individual, and was seen as a prime example of rebellion. Therefore, through
his music many people were able to express exactly they were feeling and eventually rebelled
against the pressures of society. Pepsi uses Bob Dylan as the protagonist of the commercial,
symbolizes the desire for people to explore what it means to be a rock 'n' roll rebel that lives life on
a spectrum outside of the guidelines that society already has set in place. Bob Dylan's purpose in the
Pepsi commercial is to directly

Joel Feinberg, defines the Offense Principle as " it is always a good reason in support of a proposed
criminal prohibition that it is probably necessary to prevent serious offense [as opposed to injury or
harm] to persons other than the actor, and would probably be an effect means to that end if enacted."
(Feinberg, 1984). I believe that this principle serves as the best way to analyze R. V. Keegstra. There
are many factors that fall under the Offense Principle, such as extent, duration, social value of
speech, the ease with which it can be avoided, the motives of the speaker, the number of people
offended, and the general interests of the community at large, however, I will only touch a few.
Based off of these factors, Keegstra and Zundel should be prosecuted, but not those from "Go
Yankee, go". Zundel and "Go Yankee, go" are to be discussed in a later section of this essay.
Extent – Keegstra communicated Anti–Semitic statements to many years worth of students, would
test on beliefs and would generally give better marks to those who answered based off Keegstra's
beliefs.
Duration – Keegstra carried out his anti–Semitic communication to his students for years. Whereas,
"Yankee, go home" was a flying marketing campaign.
Number of people offended – while the number of people offended might be higher with "Yankee,
go home", the fact that Keegstra's message was communicated to students, should

The Culture Of Dissent In The 1960's
Due to the Cold War, the 1960s saw a worldwide increase in students with higher levels of
education, who, armed with a language of dissent from academic literature, generated
counterresponses to both capitalism and communism. In the US, writers like Galbraith and
Goldwater inspired dissident student voices from both the political left and right. While some were
inspired by Johnson's and Randolph's Civil Rights rhetoric, and participated in Freedom Rides,
others aligned with Wallace's segregationist ideologies. A similar culture of dissent was also
apparent in the Soviet Union, where Solzhenitsyn and self–published samizdat provided the
language of anti–communist dissent, which compared Soviet life to life in a Gulag prison. Unlike in
the US,

Gay Marriage Dissent
Same sex or gay marriage is a topic that is always in the news these days. Well, a recent Supreme
Court case's decision was to legalize this type of marriage here in the US. This essay will give a
brief history of same sex marriages, summarize the legal reasoning of both the majority and dissent
in the Supreme Court Decision and even evaluate how the media interpreted the decision.
In North America, one may think that same–sex marriages were always allowed or legal as it is
today. However, they weren't practiced or welcomed as it is today. In fact, as the Wikipedia states,
"same–sex marriage was outlawed on December 16, 342 AD by the Christian emperors Constantius
II and Constans. This law specifically outlaws marriages between men and reads ... Show more

However, how did they summarize the legal reasoning of both the majority and the dissent in the
Supreme Court decision? Well, the Supreme Court, 5–4, majority and dissent both had their views
on the case.
The majority's opinion was that same–sex couples respect marriage, ask for equal dignity in the eye
of the law and that it is granted by the Constitution. They also say that even though people who
strongly believe or follow the tradition that a couple is made up of a man and women will continue
to oppose same sex marriage, however, the majority's opinion is allow the marriages.
On the other hand, the dissent's opinion was much different. They didn't really think about whether
same sex couples were a good or bad idea, instead they thought that this whole case, in general,
should have been left for the states to decide and not have been brought to the Supreme court to
decide. In fact, they think that fundamental rights are still to be found and developed.
Finally, one may now understand the history of same sex marriage and how people today,
specifically in the West, are starting to legalize the marriages of this sort, however, how did the
media interpret the decision? Has the media misinterpreted or exaggerated any of the details of the

Dissent In The Civil Rights Movement
On January 21, 2017, an estimated 500,000 Americans marched on the National Mall, continuing a
longstanding tradition of protest on this public space. On this particular day, protesters sought to
send a message to President Donald Trump regarding women's rights. Known as the Women's
March, this event is only one of the more recent examples of large–scale protest and dissent on the
National Mall. Throughout American history, protest movements have often made their way to
Washington, D.C., the capital city and political center of the United States. Although the National
Mall was not necessarily designed in a way that fosters protest, it quickly became the foremost
venue for American demonstration. As AIDS activist Cleve Jones once stated, "the ... Show more

Although the McMillan Plan left some room for interpretation, it also continued to promote some
national ideals – and demonstrators took advantage of that "state–sponsored fiction of universality...
[and] made the Mall the nation's premier setting for political assembly and protest." More simply,
protestors used the glorified sense of union promoted on the Mall to push forward their political
dissent. This principle is particularly relevant in understanding the Civil Rights Movement's
utilization of the National Mall. In August 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders
planned a "'prayer pilgrimage' to the Lincoln Memorial," where King delivered his most famous
speech on its steps. King's choice to deliver his speech at this memorial was undeniably deliberate.
Abolitionist President Lincoln led the United States through the Civil War and gained a reputation as
the man who ended slavery. King's speech, delivered at the memorial that honored that man,
outlined the principles of racial equality – focusing on many of the shortcomings in American
society. King's choice of venue suggested that although the Lincoln Memorial celebrated equality in
principle, the United States had a long way to go regarding this issue. This demonstration's use of a
feature on the National Mall demonstrated the hypocrisy of it, as the public space honored a doctrine
that was not universally practiced in everyday American life. This march was one of the first of its
kind, but it was certainly not the last. Throughout the latter half of the twentieth century,
demonstrations have utilized features of the National Mall to promote relevant political causes.
Demonstrations against the Vietnam War occurred frequently on the National Mall, many of which
were less carefully

Boorstin On Dissent And Disagreement
Boorstin makes a profoundly wise distinction between disagreement and dissent. Right after World
war II (1945), the American Society experienced a great cultural change as minority groups started
to take a stand against discrimination. Such a stand bolsters Boorstin's statement that "A liberal
society thrives on disagreement but is killed by dissension. Disagreement is the lifeblood of
democracy, dissention is its cancer." This description clearly relates to the society during the 1960s,
for the expression he uses, "Dissent is the great problem of America today," is found in The Decline
of Radicalism which was published in 1969. Leading up to the 1960s, discrimination has only been
a disagreement, but in the 1960s, it became a dissension. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With the Civil Rights Movement in full force, it was time the government took serious action, or the
"cancer" would spread. The ongoing racism at the time, made African Americans "feel apart from
others" more than ever. Such isolation can be visible in the complete negligence of the Brown v
Board of Education decision. Instead of following the Warren Court's decision of desegregating
public schools, in places like Little Rock Arkansas, schools were still segregated. The transfer from
a disagreement to disension marks a time in which African Americans led several protests that
sparked national outrage. The Woolworth Sit–in, for example, had significant impact on the South as
the sit–ins successfully desegregated lunch counters and other public places. The March on
Washington which is the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream speech", convinced the
government to take action concerning the civil rights movement before more violence could occur.
In the following years, The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed the prevention of black citizen class
from voting, and seeing that they were threatened to not vote in the south, the government provided
federal oversight of elections in places of evident discrimination. Boostin explains, that the "liberal
society...is killed by dissension," which was the case during the Civil Rights Movement. If the
government had not given African Americans more rights, the cancerous side, continued widespread
rebellions against prolonged unfair treatment, would have destroyed the American

A Research Study On Dissent Essay
Literature Review Dissent within organizations could be seen as organizational problems. The
climate of the organizations and the managers misunderstand and unable to identify and respond to
the expression of dissent. It is a risky situation for employees to dissent upwardly, but they might
gain benefits from doing it. At the beginning, dissent tends to be part of issues of principle and
ethics prior findings has indicated that organizational, relational, and individual factors likely drive
the upward dissent. However, they do not discuss the strategies of upward dissent used by
employees. In this study, the author aims to explore strategies of upward dissent. The study
identified four different strategies which include personal, contractual, regulative, and direct tactics.
The exit–voice–loyalty model of employees in the super–subordinate relations also studied. Purpose
dan Research Questions The purpose of this study was to assess strategies employees use to express
upward dissent within contemporary organizations. "RQ1: What identifiable upward dissent
strategies do employees use?"(p.192) Methodology The author used a survey questionnaire to
collect data from respondents (N=135) who were full–time employees in Arizona. Their work fields
were in sales, education, health care, banking or financial services, manufacturing, service,
government, information technology, engineering, media or communication, nonprofit, law

Essay On Prescient Dissenters
America's Prescient Dissenters embraces Senator Fulbright and Dr. Bacevich's impassioned and
educated objections to the Vietnam War and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) respectively, and it
champions their public disagreement with the presidential administrations of their time.
Furthermore, America's Prescient Dissenters reinforces the notion that Dissent and political
discourse are founding principles of our great democracy, but also suggests that history forgets those
like Fulbright and Bacevich. Fulbright argued that "consensus was equivalent to complacency"
(LeVien 10), but as a nation, our greatest crowning achievements occur when we overcome
partisanship and focus on results and collaboration achieved through "passionate, frank, and

Unfortunately indicative of the politics and policies in today's terms, foreign policy increasingly
occurs 150 characters at a time through Twitter, and the unhinged behavior often displayed by our
executive leadership damages our national image and ability to effectively manage foreign policy.
This fosters a political climate bent on retribution, vilifying dissent, and clear lacks of self–control
does not convey an image of national strength and admiration. Unfortunately, this reinforces the
stereotypical worldview of American's and our politics as "the gun toting cowboy" that shoots first

"environment of threat inflation, frenzied overreaction, confusion, complexity, and uncertainty
requires cool judgment" (LeVien 16), but cool judgement and detailed planning are not the
hallmarks of a shoot–from–the–hip approach. Fulbright spoke to this in The Arrogance of Power in
comparing two Americas when he clearly portrayed "the gun toting cowboy" as self righteous,
narrowly egotistical, and arrogant in the use of power (Fulbright 245). This only reinforces Fulbright

Dissent Vs Majority Research Paper
Women's suffrage, Civil Rights, LGBT rights etc, these abolitionists of all kinds have for years
fought against the majority in order to achieve a level playing field. In America, when the majority
is challenged and refuted change has room to flourish which leads to a resolution. A disagreement
needs to be fueled on both sides. Look at it like a game of "rock em sock em" both players have to
emit force in order to compete with the other but the player who puts out the strongest force wins.
That's how it is with dissent vs. disagreement. Disagreement creates the division between the
majority and the minority, those who are for and those who are against. Though, the force is fueled
by dissent, the minority with emotion, doctrines and decrees ... Show more content on

In all famous conflicts there is an affirmative and a negative with one holding the majority. Also in
all famous cases the majority holds the upper hand and withholds the idea/thing the minority wants
to change in the palms. In the definition of the word is the idea that dissent is for those "who fall
apart from others" who don't get treated like the norm. This is when dissent transforms and
progresses their thirst for development of the issue. For example, the Civil Rights movement was a
long train of back and forth in order to try to achieve the equal rights the majority held and the
minority wanted. Boorstin claims that "disagreement is the lifeblood of democracy" though if those
fighting for freedom sat around a table and disagreed it's possible they could have argued forever

Thomas Frank that companies are definitely trying to promote their products by saying how their
products are different and rebellious from others. Slogans such as "Sometimes You Gotta Break the
Rules" by Burger King and "The Rules Have Changed" by Dodge are evident examples that Frank
provided on how companies are trying to market their products as rebellious and unique. In reality, it

Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit
In the novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, by Jeanette Winterson, most of the important,
decision–making, characters are female. Jeanette, the female protagonist, is greatly influenced by
her mother, a strong, overbearing, eccentric woman, and by Elsie, a prominent member of the family
parish who becomes Jeanette's only friend and closest confidant. Elsie and Jeanette's mother act as
polar forces in Jeanette's life, with the mother encouraging suppression of "unholy" or "unnatural"
feelings and thoughts, and Elsie encouraging expression of feelings and accepting oneself for who
one really is.

at the same time as Mother's natural interest peeked through, she suppressed them by condemning
Next Door's behavior.
Throughout the book, many attempts are made by Jeanette's mother to make Jeanette suppress her
feelings and sexual orientation. When Mother finds out that Jeanette is a lesbian, she kicks her out of
the house, saying, "You'll have to leave, I'm not havin' demons here."(Page 136). That incident,
however, happens only after Mother and the Pastor try many times to make Jeanette repent and
renounce her sexual feelings toward women, including trying to make her feel guilty and shameful,
sending away her sexual partners, and locking her in a room for thirty–six without food or light.
Elsie, on the other hand, offers a different approach to life, and serves as a counterexample to
Mother's repressive influences. Elsie is a member of the church who befriends Jeanette and
understands her problems, and is one of the only people with whom Jeanette feels open and
comfortable. The manner in which Elsie encourages Jeanette to express herself can be seen when the
young protagonist skillfully crafts a sampler which her teachers criticize sharply for it's text, which
reads "the summer is ended and we are not yet saved."(Page 39). When

In what ways can comparative study help to improve our understanding of politics? Support your
argument with reference to at least two examples. As the topic suggests whether everyone and
everything is political in this case there is no right or wrong way to argue this point. But I think the
best way to approach this essay is to understand the meaning of Politics. What is politics? Politics is
an emotive word and can be used in different context by different people. According to Jef
Huysmans (2005) Politics is a contest of power and values in public. Politics is thus about conflict
between different opinions on what the important issues are for a community and on how to deal

Jef Huysmans (2005) explain further that Politics is an activity that defines which problems are
important for a society and how these problems are understood within a society. But also Politics
can be seen as the authoritative allocation of values, rights and duties for the society as a whole.
Politics is not just a contest but also governmental activity in which values, rights and duties are
allocated. This concept emphasizes that politics is not just about struggle for power and between
opinions but it is also the activity of a governmental machine. The development of post materialism
has resulted in a cultural surplus and people having needs other than subsistence due to the fact that
they are economically more affluent. Gaining cooperation from the other side requires strategy.
Control tactics such as negotiations, persuasions, cohesion and sometimes force and treat which is
inform of power But the expectation of reward and the actual probability of reward essentially
dictate political action. Rewards are both individual and societal. I still do not understand why is still
a confusing process with so many dissatisfying outcomes? Jef Huysmans (2005) I argued that
politics can happen everywhere but not all the time. In other words, every place can be, but does not
necessarily have to be, a political site. This contested nature of politics is answer in respect to

Authentic Dissent And The Devil 's Advocate
The results of the study which compared authentic dissent and the devil's advocate found that the
devil's advocate did not reach the level of the original thoughts stimulated by the authentic dissenter
but in turn did stimulate a greater amount of thoughts that supported the initial viewpoint (Nemeth et
al., 2001). The study also revealed with the use of the three way ANOVA a significant variance
between minority authority and consistent devil's advocate. Planned contrast revealed that the
consistent devil's advocate was disliked more than the control (Nemeth et al., 2001). While the
authentic minority was only slightly disliked more than the control, these two methods did not
considerably fluctuate on likability (Nemeth et al., 2001). The use of the three level ANOVA did
have a noticeable change to the number of solutions found. It revealed that when using a planned
contrast model the authentic minority condition generated the most solutions to the results in the
study. With higher solutions than both consistent devil's advocate condition and the control, these
two did not fluctuate by much. Regarding the mood of the groups which these processes were used
seemed to be very similar. There were few differences between authentic minority and devil's
advocate with regard to anger and excitement (Nemeth et al., 2001). Concerning the observations of
the groups process, a third principle revealed three factors, harmony, stimulation, and group conflict

Analysis : ' The Dissent ' By Thomas Frank
Conformity was once a common concept accepted by many Americans. Citizens were expected to
participate in similar behavior, activities, and lifestyles. Advertisers used the desire to conform to
societal ideologies in order to endorse and sell their products. However, during the 1950's cultural
revolution, Beats movement, individuals began dismissing the need to conform and began
expressing their own individual endeavors. As the result of the rejection of collective conformity
advertisers converted their strategies and began using freedom of expression as a ploy to get people

Dissent In Lord Of The Flies, By William Golding
While having a differing beliefs from others is not always encouraged by society, it allows us to
create our own identities. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, the theme of dissent starts to
become prevalent as the islanders' life progresses due to disagreements and the vast differences
between priorities. I can relate since dissent has played a large role in the creation of my unaltered
views and opinions, most notably at my time in school while in math class. Despite my desire to get
ahead and do things differently, I was always met with direct opposition from my peers and
teachers. From this experience, I learned that dissenting from society's expectations eventually leads
in the creation of internal and external reform of opinions and customs. This is because dissent
allows you to gain a societal voice and reshape your identity. One reason why I feel dissent allows
you to change the opinions of others is due to how it gives you a societal voice. By having an
empowering role in society, people are more likely to listen to your advice and act upon it.
Dissenting from what is normal indicates bravery and confidence within and individual, which can
sway others into following them. I can recall an experience in middle school where we were often
told to solve math problems and shows our work in restrictive ways. As such, I expressed my
distaste towards these methods by solving math problems using my own strategies and ideas.
However, many of my classmates did

Dissent In American History
Dissent movement in American history was essential back in the era. Today, dissent is still important
in America because it gives people the freedom to stand up for their rights. Moreover, dissent in
American history was important and powerful back in the day because it's symbolized freedom and
equal rights. Dissent takes us to different stages in life so that we could learn step by step to grow
and to make the world become one nation. America is known for the land of freedom because the
dissenters and the people who willing to fight had made that happen. One of the most important
protest movements in America was civil rights. What is the civil rights?, the answer is quite simple,
it's the rights to give people freedom and equality. Civil rights brings out the peace to the world. It
unites different races to join hands and to fight for their needs. Example of Civil Rights, "Freedom
of speech, press, and assembly; the right to vote; freedom from involuntary servitude; and the right
to equality in public places. Discrimination occurs when the civil rights of an individual are denied

become a better place. Even though in today's time period, we still experience racism here and there,
but it is not as bad like it was before. Martin Luther King made the United States become the land of
freedom. American History is what makes the world become what it is today. For example, back in
the American History, dissenters were made to fight for freedom, civil rights, women's suffrage, and
gay rights. Without the dissenters, the nation would increased numerous of

Why Society Need Dissent Analysis
Following along with people around you is a major part of society. There is a comfort that comes
with groups. Often times, people seek out others to ensure that they are behaving in the correct
manner and to ease any fears that they may have. In the articles, Why Societies Need Dissent by
Cass R. Sunstein, and The Herd Instinct by Roger Sandall, the affect of this grouping mentality is
discussed and debated. A group setting appeals to almost every human and every animal. The need
to group together is common within society. It is a natural instinct that many follow to find levels of
comfort and safety. That is a reason that many react positively to the group setting, it is easier to find
safety in numbers. There are few though who live individualistic lives, although they are the ...

The individual develops differently in ways that group members do not. Sandall says, "Men in herd
societies overanxiously look to each other for reassuring definitions of the good, the beautiful, and
the true." An individual does not have to worry about these and their judgments are based solely on
other reasoning's. Also an individual can take actions and express opinions. without the fear of being
punished; "if people threaten to blow the whistle on wrongdoing or to disclose facts that contradict
an emerging group consensus, they might well be punished" (Sunstein). The individual helps the
society grow because they do not fall into the same patterns as everyone else. With their ability to
think freely and openly, they can achieve things that many may not have thought possible because of
the precedents of the generational groups before. Sandall says, "full development of self–reliant men
and women was essential to human progress." Without a person who does not rely on the group and
the groups opinions, they are able to achieve more than imaginable. The group only limits what a
person is capable

Repression Of Dissent Summary
"The Repression of Dissent" is explained by Dr. Parenti in that the government doesn't benefit us.
The National Security Autocracy is the government loosing group authorities because the main goal
of the government is to free–market globalization. According to Dr. Parenti agencies such as the FBI
and CIA are intelligence agencies in which their goal "is to defeat movements at home and abroad to
seek alternatives to free–market globalization" (129). In order for these advanced programs to
succeed, they are required to have a lot of money in their hands. Their intelligence budget was
"about $44 billion in 2005" (130). Now, agencies with this much technology have the power to spy
on regular citizens and congress. For instance, the Pentagon's ... Show more content on

Dissent And Disagreement
Dissent and Disagreement A world where slavery is still widespread, genocide is an everyday
occurrence, and the voices of the common citizen is silenced. This would have happened if we only
disagreed over such matters and not dissented. In the Decline of Radicalism, by Daniel J. Boorstin,
he asserts that "disagreement is the life blood of democracy, dissension is its cancer" and that dissent
is negative word. Boorstin also claims that "disagreement produces debate", which is true, but could
have all conflicts been solved with diplomacy? Dissent is the life blood of democracy and it is not
negative; it is vital to how our nation came to be. Dissent is, according to Boorstin, is when people
"have a quarrel", and disagreement is when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But they do not always listen. Dissent is when you revolt and you fight back against voices that try
to drown out yours. History shows that dissent is the true baseline of democracy. In the Civil Rights
movement, would talking about racism, segregation, and oppressive laws have changed a thing? No,
it took dissent to progress forward. It took protesting in the streets, it took illegal action and
subsequently getting arrested for it. Disagreement would have not push America forward, dissent
did, does, and will. Discussion is bred from disagreement, according to the author, but does
discussion work? Discussion and diplomacy are also foundations of democracy. Debate and
nonviolence are cornerstones of how our government works. With it, we avoid a lot of conflict and
we can manage to find a compromise in coordination with other parties. Though, you have to ask
yourself this question: does discussion always work? If we talked with Great Britain about seceding
from their empire, would we even be our own country? We dissented and fought for our
independence. Likewise, in the American Civil War, it would be completely unacceptable if we
compromised on slavery. We fought so human beings could have basic rights, and there would be no
way we could talk the South into abolishing slavery. Diplomacy is beneficial to democracy, but the
truth is that without dissenting democracy would not exist at all. Boorstin writes

Grief, Loss, And Loss

Grief, Loss, and Everything Josh Kos would Floss (this is not the actual title)
Grief and loss are some of the most defining characteristics of the human experience. Therefore,
dealing with grief and loss is one of the most important things humans must learn. While there are
many approaches, Jennifer Kent uses her film The Babadook to suggest that suppression is not a
healthy way to deal with grief. By thoughtfully planning the mise–en–scene, soundtrack, and
narrative storytelling, Kent teaches viewers that suppression causes the inner monster to come out in
all of us, just as it did to Amelia in The Babadook.
In The Babadook, suppression of grief is at the root of all of Amelia's personal problems.
Suppressing her grief resulted in her becoming isolated from everyone around her, from her co–
worker Robby, her sister Claire, to even her son Sam. Because she was so wrapped up in
suppressing memories of her husband, Amelia lost touch with the living world, and is left in an
awkward limbo between her past and her present. Once the Babadook is unleashed, suppression of
grief leads to paranoia for Amelia. As she continues to have visions, Amelia is trapped in a different
limbo between reality and inside her mind, and as she continues to suppress her grief, her situation
becomes progressively worse.
Amelia's house and the tree across the street from Amelia's house are important motifs throughout
The Babadook. However, while trees and

The Pros And Cons Of Defection Vs. Dissent
Soon after Independence, it was very easy for a legislative elected member to switch his party as he
wished, mainly to satisfy and fulfill their ambitions. These personally vested interests created
hinderances in the smooth function of Governments. Such consequences were deterring
administration therefore the legislatures made an amendment in 1985, 52nd Amendment Act and
passed a law called "Anti–defection law" which added a new schedule to our Constitution, i.e., X
Schedule. Traditionally this phenomenon was known as 'floor crossing' which had its roots in the
British House of Commons, where the legislator could change his allegiance when he crossed the
floor and moved from the side of the government to the side of the opposition or vice–versa ... Show

dissent: In this connection a distinction should be made in the middle of "defection" and "dissent"
each dissent does not sum to desertion. Subsequently under this, a part ought to be free and
permitted to vote according to his wishes on certain noteworthy matters and not as the party
educates him to do. This would ensure that the majority rule soul is achieved. For e.g., if on a
specific arrangement, the party will guide the member to vote particularly, however in the event that
voting is done as opposed to the necessities of that members electorate then he ought to be given
free hand and his own decision to vote against the summons of the party. That is the significance of
representative democracy as it should emit the opinion or need of the people instead of projecting
the needs of the leaders of the said party. It would have been wise to consider the purpose for such
opposite voting if the reason is really to consider the interests of the general population the part
ought not be suspended. By neglecting to consider this as a main priority, the Anti–Defection Law
doesn't address the vital issues.
3) Contradiction: Parliamentarian democracy is the government's answerability to the parliament
which is applied through joint responsibility. This concept is lost in the process as the ruling party
here has the whip to make all the members vote according to their directions without taking into
consideration their individual input. Therefore the party in power has X Schedule as tool for

The Superego In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
"The poor ego has a still harder time of it; it has to serve three harsh masters, and it has to do its best
to reconcile the claims and demands of all three...The three tyrants are the external world, the
superego, and the id."–Sigmund Freud. The human mind is a constant battle between the devious
nature of the id, challenges from the external world, and the moralistic and logical views of the
superego. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding presents the notion that both the id and superego
have special circumstances under which they can win over the ego. Golding uses Jack to symbolize
the id, Piggy the superego, and Ralph the ego in order to convey that the id has only been
suppressed by order. Golding uses Ralph to represent the ego in that he is controlled by the id when
order is not present, while the superego controls him when it is. When Jack enacts his first dance
with his hunters, Ralph acts sensible and calls an assembly. He preaches to the group that "the
smoke is more important than the pig... "make smoke up there– or die" (81). Ralph clearly
suppresses the id in one of his first speeches. He voices logic and reason to the boys, not quick
acquisition of pleasure that Jack advocates for. This comes so easily to him because he is surrounded
by the order of the camp, where the superego rules. Yet, when he is in Jack's world of savagery and
barbarism, the id possesses a notable authority. Ralph, Jack, and a few others are reenacting a pig
hunt when Ralph briefly

small group decision is purported to be the focus of this study. The researchers delve deeply into
dissent and ostracism research at the beginning of this article and propose two hypotheses. The first
hypothesis is that group members that dissent either in idea or process dissent will be rated as less
attractive. The second is that participants in groups with a dissenting individual, either idea (H1a) or
process, will be less satisfied with the experience. The researchers also propose a research question
of how eye contact will relate to dissenters. The reason

mentally they were still enslaved. African American literature did not emerge until the 18th century

Nigerian women living in Africa, but also abroad in the United States. It is however, not the
difficulties which Adichie is ultimately focusing on, but the courage and intelligence of women who
are able to make 'small victories', overcoming various attempts of cultural oppression. Adichie's
characters are subject to cultural suppression in several of the short stories. This is most pronounced
in 'The Arrangers of Marriage' where Chinaza is forced by her husband to assimilate to her new

This includes the courage shown by the unnamed narrator in 'Cell One' to stand up and cause
damage to her parent's windshield so they could not go and visit Nnamabia for a day, a 'little victory'

apologise to Chinedu and repair their friendship, whilst in 'The Arrangers of Marriage' Chinaza
returns to her husband. Despite his various attempts to strip her of her cultural identity and not
'know[ing] him' she returns and opens herself to 'climb[ing] up to love'. Perhaps true courage is most
evident in 'A Private Experience' where a Hausa Muslim and Igbo Christian hide together in a store
while outside their respective ethnic groups are engaged 'hacking down...with machetes,
clubbing...with stones'. To risk the possibility of being seen together, alongside the friendship they
develop is a truly courageous act. Adichie therefore demonstrates that ultimately human kindness
trumps any religious lines, whilst the women are capable of actions that put themselves in harm's
way. Furthermore, the characters are intelligent and determined. In 'Jumping Monkey Hill' Ujunwa

security measures increased by tens of millions of dollars during the meetings of political figures;
such as the G20 summit which had Toronto build a five million dollar wall around the meeting

The Story Of An Hour By Kate Chopin
"Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, exemplifies the inner conflict of many women during the late
nineteenth century, living in a suppressed patriarchal society, without the freedom and individuality
afforded the men of this era. The story conveyed the theme of conflict between a displayed public
identity and a suppressed private identity through point of view, and symbolism, and plot
development. To begin with, the point of view assisted by effectively conveying the conflict
between Mrs. Mallard's public and private identities though the use of the third person narrative.
This strategy, successfully brought emphasis to conflict between how she is viewed both publicly
and privately by first presentation an outside, objective perspective to describe her public persona,
while switching to the first person narrative when her private image is conveyed. The first line of the
story, demonstrated this strategy by describing Mrs. Mallard as a frail and weak, in need of "gentle"
care. This conveyed how others view her, not how she viewed herself. The outside perspective
continues objectively describing Mrs. Mallard and the setting, until she is alone and her environment
begins to affect her thoughts and feelings. Her private identity slowly emerges from suppression
while sitting alone looking out the window. This point in the story the perspective changes from an
objective outside perspective to her personal perspective, emphasizing the conflicting identities.

Dissent In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Throughout "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, the theme of dissent starts to become prevalent
as the life progresses on the island due to constant disagreement and undesirable situations.
Similarly, dissent has also played a large role in my life, most notably at my time at school as well
as my experiences in my neighborhood. From these experiences, I learned that dissenting from
society's expectations allows you to become unique and gain a societal voice, eventually leading in
the creation of internal and external reform. One reason why I feel dissent allows you to gain a
societal voice are due to my experiences at school. I can recall an experience in middle school where
we were often told to solve math problems and shows our work in very restrictive and slow ways.
As such, I expressed my distaste towards these methods by solving math problems using my own
strategies and ideas. However, many of my classmates did not want to create disagreements with the
teacher, thus making me the lone dissenter. While I was eventually reprimanded by the teacher for
my disobedience, my acts of defiance gave me a strong, opinionative voice and encouraged others to
combine their efforts to create change. As a result, our teacher eventually decided to allow us to use
our own methods provided that we displayed our work and reasoning. This shows that while
dissenting from society may spark change in others, it certainly does not come without
consequences. Furthermore, I learned that

Dissent In Justice Scalia
Justice Scalia opened his dissent by claiming he had no personal opinion of the concept of gay
marriage, rather he felt he had to write his own dissent in order to "call attention to the Court's threat

expressions such as, "ludicrous, absurd, irrational and preposterous." His opinions were nasty, and
personal even though he states same–sex marriage isn't a personal matter to him. Scalia blames the
Court for creating a fundamental right that does not exist, yet the Constitution does not state specific
fundamental rights. The dissent was written with such hatred towards not only the ruling, but also
the Justices who made up the decision. Whether

Managing Guerrilla Government
Yamini Gollapudi
3/2/2015
In its Ethics of Dissent– Managing Guerrilla Government, Rosemary O'Leary provides a sobering
description on bureaucratic sabotage in federal government through stories of dissenting public
officials named as "guerrillas" or "administrative guerrillas". Guerrillas are the one who engage in
irregular warfare as a member of an independent unit and they are the one who are willing to see the
change in the public organizations (pg. 4). Dissatisfaction from the actions of public institutions
makes the guerrillas to work against the wishes of superiors or organizational norms either
implicitly or explicitly and to make a push back against the management to do what they believe is
the right thing which can be termed as "guerrilla government" (p. xi). According to O'Leary majority
of the guerrilla governments occur because of the inevitable tension between bureaucracy and
democracy that will never go away and they are undetectable because of uninvolving world of
bureaucracy (pg. 3, 8). This tension in turn create ethical and management challenges including the
harsh realities which all the public servants must learn to steer. To explain these tensions O'Leary
uses three lenses: Bureaucratic politics, Organizations and Management and Ethics with the help of
three in–depth case studies and 21 mini cases. These case studies involve the

Ireland Tradition and Dissent
Humanities: Tradition and Dissent
TMA03 – Option 1 Ireland: the Invention of Tradition
How useful are the concepts of "tradition" and "dissent" in understanding attitudes to the built
heritage of Ireland?
The two concepts of "tradition" and "dissent" are extremely useful in understanding the built
heritage of Ireland. To understand the differing attitudes to the built heritage of Ireland is to
contemplate the historical accounts, stories and legends that fabricate traditions and incite dissent.
The concept of tradition is associated with the passing down through generations, beliefs, thoughts
and actions ("tradition", n.d) and dissent derives from a desire to publicly protest against the
traditions and against those holding the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This small step to independence by a group of dissenters was able to use the built heritage site of
Tara to invoke within the Irish people a sense of their lost traditionalism and new found fervor for
nationalism (Laurence, 2008, p.159). Nevertheless, the continual dominance of British rule saw no
substantial social and economic changes for Catholics as they were still"steeped in habitual misery"
(Finn & Lynch, 1995, p.24).
At Daniel O'Connell's burial site, his supporters erected the tallest round tower in Ireland. The round
tower is a historical symbol of Irish Christianity. This enabled dissenters to create new traditions to
speak to future generations through the visual power of a symbolic monument. At his request, O
'Connell's heart was buried in Rome, the home of the Catholic Church (Burke et al. 2008)
By the beginning of the 19th century, the Cromwellian policies of plantation and land confiscation
were evident on the landscapes of country estates. Landownership was the domain of the privileged
minority. In 1804, up to 10,000 landlords, within a population of 5.4 million, were almost
exclusively Protestant; only 5% of land in Catholic hands ("History of Landed Estates in Ireland,
n.d). This leads to another asset to the built heritage of Ireland, known as "The Big House". The Big

The Technological Revolution Has Changed The Access Of...
1.0 Introduction
The advent of the technological revolution has fundamentally changed the access that citizens
within a democracy have to sensitive and private information about governments, organisations,
workplaces and fellow citizens. It is incumbent upon individuals to honour the privacy of this
information. The protection of sensitive information is considered paramount, yet anyone with
information that they feel is in the public interest and is faced with no avenues to make their
concerns known is turning to the internet as a 'platform for the swift dissemination of material and a
layer of anonymity' (Savage 2013) and this new era of what is known as whistleblowing has given
rise to cyberethics.
According to the Congressional Research Service, whistleblowing is defined as "making a
disclosure evidencing illegal or improper government (and corporate) activities" (Whitaker cited in
Koh, 2012). The individuals who make these disclosures are termed whistleblowers, and while the
information they expose is protected by legislation and codes of conduct, they are usually not
afforded the same level of protection, and indeed, are open to prosecution for breaking the law.
The purpose of this report is to evaluate whether all citizens in a democracy should be protected
from criminalisation for exposing nepotism and corruption.

As whistleblowing in a cyber context is a new field of study, there is limited quantitative research

Thomas Frank's Article 'Commodify Your Dissent'
In the article "Commodify Your Dissent", Thomas Frank argues about his point that is based on the
American cultural ideas in the 1950s. There are a lot of differences between two lifestyles, such as
education, technology, and fashion. I strongly agree with Thomas Frank that marketing no longer
promotes conformity, but, rather, promotes "never–ending self–fulfillment" and "constantly updated
individualism". Because humans' interest and trend are changing over time, humans' needs gradually
increase. Back then, people only use magazines and TV to advertise their products. Nowadays, the
technology is developed significantly, so advertisers have to change to match the society's trends to
get customers attention. Moreover, they have a lot of good

Commodify Your Dissent, By Norton And Frank
Is it actually us, as an individual, who chooses our identity? Perhaps marketers have jurisdiction
over our character by selling us their creations. Anne Norton describes in her essay, "Signs of
Shopping," that shopping is the true passage way to one 's character. Similarly, in the essay
"Commodify Your Dissent," Thomas Frank discusses how these corporations allow one to flaunt
their rebellious personality. Both Norton and Frank believe that one's individuality is held in the
hands of businesses. Each store can attract specific types of people while promoting laziness and
rebellion. For decades now, humans have always been so quick to judge a book by it's cover; one's
clothes help create the cover to this book. Norton brings up various styles individuals wear and how
it displays their character to the world. For instance, "a display in the window of polo provides an
embarrassment of semiotic riches" (Norton 88). One who wears the brand polo is someone who is of
the upper class due to it's vogue aesthetic and price tags. This goes for any high end designer brand
like Michael Kors or Chanel; if one is seen covered in such a luxury, there is no doubt they are
living in wealth. By wearing this clothing, one is being told to attain the typical preeminent behavior
of the rich, having an attitude that they surpass all others. Moreover, Frank focuses on a particular
group who have this rock and roll flare. He believes "we consume not to fit in, but to prove, on the

Pre-Political Dissent

  • 1. Pre-Political Dissent Tumultuous Rock: the Culture of Dissent in the Music of Communist Czechoslovakia "One of the highest aims of art is the creation of unrest" – Ivan Jirous Longhairs, punkers, and the musical underground. In soviet Czechoslovakia, all of these groups were part of a cultural revolution of rejecting societal norms and a movement of pre–political dissent. Music is an emotive response to dissent, a form that is more of a way of being than just ideological. The musical underground allowed citizens of Czechoslovakia to create a counterculture movement without being inherently political. These people purely wanted the freedom to express themselves and this idea of pre–political dissent was exemplified through the subculture of rock and punk music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before the onset of normalization, rock music was not as regulated and often had public spaces for musicians to play their music such as the Big Beat festivals. However after normalization, many of these festivals were shut down, venues were scarce and bands had to requalify to the regime to be allowed to play their music. Bands such as the famous Plastic People of the Universe were one of the many trying to requalify. The problem was that many of the requirements of the regime in order to be an official band was that you could not have an English band name. The Plastic People of The Universe did not fit that description. The band name itself was almost seen as a dissent point for the band, as they are named after a Frank Zappa song about the exasperation with phonies and hypocrites of the system. The consequences of the Plastics not becoming an official band seemed at first to set them back, as they had to return a lot of their government owned equipment and were not allowed to release their songs. However, they soon discovered the musical underground and filled the void that was left by the disbanding of The Primitives, and started to find their own space. A turning point for the band was when Ivan Jirous aka 'Magor' became their band manager. Jirous was a cultural dissident, a friend of Vaclav Havel, and was extremely involved with the political sides of dissent of the time. Jirous influenced the Plastics to become more inherently political with their music as they started to take poetry from Egon Bondy and set it to music and to play their music in Czech and not English. Another turning point in the history of the Plastics and the underground was the Budějovická 'massacre' on March 30th 1974. A country side concert turned police brutality, the police brutalized hundreds of Czech youth who were there to see underground bands such as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The book takes place in Atlanta, Georgia and discusses the local discrimination that has been continuing to occur against African–Americans. Tomiko showed how being a demonstrator was a dangerous and serious act to take during the mid–1963 and 1964. An example was Mardon Walker, a demonstrator, who was convicted in 1964 and given a heavy sentence by the Superior Court Judge Durwood Pye. In May of 1963 the Supreme Court overturned sit–in trespassing convictions, but the legal doctrine of private property owners being allowed to discriminate was not overturned. The suit was dismissed in 1962 from the NAACP, because there was no law in Georgia requiring hotels to be segregated. However, city leaders carefully guarded Atlanta's reputation as a moderate city. • 3. Analysis : ' Your Dissent ' By Thomas Frank Many Americans gather and tune into their televisions to take part of an annual tradition that's decides who takes home the football championship– the Superbowl. This television program annually commands the attention of the entire nation and captures an audience larger than any other television program throughout the year. The game has become more than just an annual sports event, but a well anticipated American tradition that initiates a sense of gathering. Advertisers are aware of the monumental impact that the Super bowl has over consumers. As the result, advertisers spend a respectable amount of time strategically planning in order to create content to capture the attention, and manipulate the audiences that they intend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, many individuals began exploring drugs, music, and literature in order to find their own self–identities. Advertisers begun seeing the shift in motivation in society so they reflected the change onto their advertising strategies. Instead of promoting the usual conformed replicated lifestyle they promoted individualism. Advertisers reassured consumers that they would surely find the self–expression they were in search of within their products. This is evident within the "Forever Young" Pepsi commercial where advertisers are promoting individualism and rebellion through the image of rock 'n' roll legend, Bob Dylan. In his essay, Frank states, "We consume not to fit in, but to prove, on the surface at least, that we are rock 'n' roll rebels, each one of us as rule–breaking and hierarchy–defying as our heroes of the 60's..." (Frank 153). Bob Dylan revolutionized what it meant to be a self–fulfilled individual, and was seen as a prime example of rebellion. Therefore, through his music many people were able to express exactly they were feeling and eventually rebelled against the pressures of society. Pepsi uses Bob Dylan as the protagonist of the commercial, symbolizes the desire for people to explore what it means to be a rock 'n' roll rebel that lives life on a spectrum outside of the guidelines that society already has set in place. Bob Dylan's purpose in the Pepsi commercial is to directly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Culture Of Dissent In The 1960's Due to the Cold War, the 1960s saw a worldwide increase in students with higher levels of education, who, armed with a language of dissent from academic literature, generated counterresponses to both capitalism and communism. In the US, writers like Galbraith and Goldwater inspired dissident student voices from both the political left and right. While some were inspired by Johnson's and Randolph's Civil Rights rhetoric, and participated in Freedom Rides, others aligned with Wallace's segregationist ideologies. A similar culture of dissent was also apparent in the Soviet Union, where Solzhenitsyn and self–published samizdat provided the language of anti–communist dissent, which compared Soviet life to life in a Gulag prison. Well, a recent Supreme Court case's decision was to legalize this type of marriage here in the US. This essay will give a brief history of same sex marriages, summarize the legal reasoning of both the majority and dissent in the Supreme Court Decision and even evaluate how the media interpreted the decision. In North America, one may think that same–sex marriages were always allowed or legal as it is today. However, they weren't practiced or welcomed as it is today. However, how did they summarize the legal reasoning of both the majority and the dissent in the Supreme Court decision? Well, the Supreme Court, 5–4, majority and dissent both had their views on the case. The majority's opinion was that same–sex couples respect marriage, ask for equal dignity in the eye of the law and that it is granted by the Constitution. They also say that even though people who strongly believe or follow the tradition that a couple is made up of a man and women will continue to oppose same sex marriage, however, the majority's opinion is allow the marriages. On the other hand, the dissent's opinion was much different. They didn't really think about whether same sex couples were a good or bad idea, instead they thought that this whole case, in general, should have been left for the states to decide and not have been brought to the Supreme court to decide. In fact, they think that fundamental rights are still to be found and developed. • 8. Dissent In The Civil Rights Movement On January 21, 2017, an estimated 500,000 Americans marched on the National Mall, continuing a longstanding tradition of protest on this public space. On this particular day, protesters sought to send a message to President Donald Trump regarding women's rights. Known as the Women's March, this event is only one of the more recent examples of large–scale protest and dissent on the National Mall. Throughout American history, protest movements have often made their way to Washington, D.C., the capital city and political center of the United States. Although the National Mall was not necessarily designed in a way that fosters protest, it quickly became the foremost venue for American demonstration. As AIDS activist Cleve Jones once stated, "the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the McMillan Plan left some room for interpretation, it also continued to promote some national ideals – and demonstrators took advantage of that "state–sponsored fiction of universality... [and] made the Mall the nation's premier setting for political assembly and protest." More simply, protestors used the glorified sense of union promoted on the Mall to push forward their political dissent. This principle is particularly relevant in understanding the Civil Rights Movement's utilization of the National Mall. In August 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders planned a "'prayer pilgrimage' to the Lincoln Memorial," where King delivered his most famous speech on its steps. King's choice to deliver his speech at this memorial was undeniably deliberate. Abolitionist President Lincoln led the United States through the Civil War and gained a reputation as the man who ended slavery. King's speech, delivered at the memorial that honored that man, outlined the principles of racial equality – focusing on many of the shortcomings in American society. King's choice of venue suggested that although the Lincoln Memorial celebrated equality in principle, the United States had a long way to go regarding this issue. This demonstration's use of a feature on the National Mall demonstrated the hypocrisy of it, as the public space honored a doctrine that was not universally practiced in everyday American life. This march was one of the first of its kind, but it was certainly not the last. Throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, demonstrations have utilized features of the National Mall to promote relevant political causes. Demonstrations against the Vietnam War occurred frequently on the National Mall, many of which were less carefully ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Boorstin On Dissent And Disagreement Boorstin makes a profoundly wise distinction between disagreement and dissent. Right after World war II (1945), the American Society experienced a great cultural change as minority groups started to take a stand against discrimination. Such a stand bolsters Boorstin's statement that "A liberal society thrives on disagreement but is killed by dissension. Disagreement is the lifeblood of democracy, dissention is its cancer." This description clearly relates to the society during the 1960s, for the expression he uses, "Dissent is the great problem of America today," is found in The Decline of Radicalism which was published in 1969. Leading up to the 1960s, discrimination has only been a disagreement, but in the 1960s, it became a dissension. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the Civil Rights Movement in full force, it was time the government took serious action, or the "cancer" would spread. The ongoing racism at the time, made African Americans "feel apart from others" more than ever. Such isolation can be visible in the complete negligence of the Brown v Board of Education decision. Instead of following the Warren Court's decision of desegregating public schools, in places like Little Rock Arkansas, schools were still segregated. The transfer from a disagreement to disension marks a time in which African Americans led several protests that sparked national outrage. The Woolworth Sit–in, for example, had significant impact on the South as the sit–ins successfully desegregated lunch counters and other public places. The March on Washington which is the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream speech", convinced the government to take action concerning the civil rights movement before more violence could occur. In the following years, The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed the prevention of black citizen class from voting, and seeing that they were threatened to not vote in the south, the government provided federal oversight of elections in places of evident discrimination. Boostin explains, that the "liberal society...is killed by dissension," which was the case during the Civil Rights Movement. If the government had not given African Americans more rights, the cancerous side, continued widespread rebellions against prolonged unfair treatment, would have destroyed the American ... • 10. A Research Study On Dissent Essay Literature Review Dissent within organizations could be seen as organizational problems. The climate of the organizations and the managers misunderstand and unable to identify and respond to the expression of dissent. It is a risky situation for employees to dissent upwardly, but they might gain benefits from doing it. At the beginning, dissent tends to be part of issues of principle and ethics prior findings has indicated that organizational, relational, and individual factors likely drive the upward dissent. However, they do not discuss the strategies of upward dissent used by employees. In this study, the author aims to explore strategies of upward dissent. The study identified four different strategies which include personal, contractual, regulative, and direct tactics. The exit–voice–loyalty model of employees in the super–subordinate relations also studied. Purpose dan Research Questions The purpose of this study was to assess strategies employees use to express upward dissent within contemporary organizations. "RQ1: What identifiable upward dissent strategies do employees use?"(p.192) Methodology The author used a survey questionnaire to collect data from respondents (N=135) who were full–time employees in Arizona. Essay On Prescient Dissenters America's Prescient Dissenters embraces Senator Fulbright and Dr. Bacevich's impassioned and educated objections to the Vietnam War and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) respectively, and it champions their public disagreement with the presidential administrations of their time. Furthermore, America's Prescient Dissenters reinforces the notion that Dissent and political discourse are founding principles of our great democracy, but also suggests that history forgets those like Fulbright and Bacevich. This fosters a political climate bent on retribution, vilifying dissent, and clear lacks of self–control does not convey an image of national strength and admiration. Unfortunately, this reinforces the stereotypical worldview of American's and our politics as "the gun toting cowboy" that shoots first and asks questions later. While "the gun toting cowboy" is part of our culture as a nation, an "environment of threat inflation, frenzied overreaction, confusion, complexity, and uncertainty requires cool judgment" (LeVien 16), but cool judgement and detailed planning are not the hallmarks of a shoot–from–the–hip approach. Dissent Vs Majority Research Paper Women's suffrage, Civil Rights, LGBT rights etc, these abolitionists of all kinds have for years fought against the majority in order to achieve a level playing field. In America, when the majority is challenged and refuted change has room to flourish which leads to a resolution. A disagreement needs to be fueled on both sides. Look at it like a game of "rock em sock em" both players have to emit force in order to compete with the other but the player who puts out the strongest force wins. Essay Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit In the novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, by Jeanette Winterson, most of the important, decision–making, characters are female. Jeanette, the female protagonist, is greatly influenced by her mother, a strong, overbearing, eccentric woman, and by Elsie, a prominent member of the family parish who becomes Jeanette's only friend and closest confidant. Elsie and Jeanette's mother act as polar forces in Jeanette's life, with the mother encouraging suppression of "unholy" or "unnatural" feelings and thoughts, and Elsie encouraging expression of feelings and accepting oneself for who one really is. Elsie, on the other hand, offers a different approach to life, and serves as a counterexample to Mother's repressive influences. Elsie is a member of the church who befriends Jeanette and understands her problems, and is one of the only people with whom Jeanette feels open and comfortable. The study also revealed with the use of the three way ANOVA a significant variance between minority authority and consistent devil's advocate. Planned contrast revealed that the consistent devil's advocate was disliked more than the control (Nemeth et al., 2001). In his essay, Frank states, "We consume not to fit in, but to prove, on the surface at least, that we are rock 'n' roll rebels, each one of us as rule–breaking and hierarchy–defying as our heroes of the 60's, who now pitch cars, shoes, and beer" (Frank 153). In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, the theme of dissent starts to become prevalent as the islanders' life progresses due to disagreements and the vast differences between priorities. I can relate since dissent has played a large role in the creation of my unaltered views and opinions, most notably at my time in school while in math class. Despite my desire to get ahead and do things differently, I was always met with direct opposition from my peers and teachers. From this experience, I learned that dissenting from society's expectations eventually leads in the creation of internal and external reform of opinions and customs. This is because dissent allows you to gain a societal voice and reshape your identity. One reason why I feel dissent allows you to change the opinions of others is due to how it gives you a societal voice. By having an empowering role in society, people are more likely to listen to your advice and act upon it. Dissenting from what is normal indicates bravery and confidence within and individual, which can sway others into following them. Therefore, dealing with grief and loss is one of the most important things humans must learn. While there are many approaches, Jennifer Kent uses her film The Babadook to suggest that suppression is not a healthy way to deal with grief. By thoughtfully planning the mise–en–scene, soundtrack, and narrative storytelling, Kent teaches viewers that suppression causes the inner monster to come out in all of us, just as it did to Amelia in The Babadook. In The Babadook, suppression of grief is at the root of all of Amelia's personal problems. Suppressing her grief resulted in her becoming isolated from everyone around her, from her co– worker Robby, her sister Claire, to even her son Sam. Because she was so wrapped up in suppressing memories of her husband, Amelia lost touch with the living world, and is left in an awkward limbo between her past and her present. Once the Babadook is unleashed, suppression of grief leads to paranoia for Amelia. As she continues to have visions, Amelia is trapped in a different limbo between reality and inside her mind, and as she continues to suppress her grief, her situation becomes progressively worse. The human mind is a constant battle between the devious nature of the id, challenges from the external world, and the moralistic and logical views of the superego. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding presents the notion that both the id and superego have special circumstances under which they can win over the ego. Golding uses Jack to symbolize the id, Piggy the superego, and Ralph the ego in order to convey that the id has only been suppressed by order. Golding uses Ralph to represent the ego in that he is controlled by the id when order is not present, while the superego controls him when it is. When Jack enacts his first dance with his hunters, Ralph acts sensible and calls an assembly. He preaches to the group that "the smoke is more important than the pig... The Story Of An Hour By Kate Chopin "Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, exemplifies the inner conflict of many women during the late nineteenth century, living in a suppressed patriarchal society, without the freedom and individuality afforded the men of this era. The story conveyed the theme of conflict between a displayed public identity and a suppressed private identity through point of view, and symbolism, and plot development. To begin with, the point of view assisted by effectively conveying the conflict between Mrs. Mallard's public and private identities though the use of the third person narrative. This strategy, successfully brought emphasis to conflict between how she is viewed both publicly and privately by first presentation an outside, objective perspective to describe her public persona, while switching to the first person narrative when her private image is conveyed. The first line of the story, demonstrated this strategy by describing Mrs. Mallard as a frail and weak, in need of "gentle" care. This conveyed how others view her, not how she viewed herself. The outside perspective continues objectively describing Mrs. Mallard and the setting, until she is alone and her environment begins to affect her thoughts and feelings. From these experiences, I learned that dissenting from society's expectations allows you to become unique and gain a societal voice, eventually leading in the creation of internal and external reform. One reason why I feel dissent allows you to gain a societal voice are due to my experiences at school. I can recall an experience in middle school where we were often told to solve math problems and shows our work in very restrictive and slow ways. The Ethics Of Dissent : Managing Guerrilla Government Georgia Southern University Book Review : The Ethics of Dissent Managing Guerrilla Government Yamini Gollapudi 3/2/2015 In its Ethics of Dissent– Managing Guerrilla Government, Rosemary O'Leary provides a sobering description on bureaucratic sabotage in federal government through stories of dissenting public officials named as "guerrillas" or "administrative guerrillas". Guerrillas are the one who engage in irregular warfare as a member of an independent unit and they are the one who are willing to see the change in the public organizations (pg. 4). Dissatisfaction from the actions of public institutions makes the guerrillas to work against the wishes of superiors or organizational norms either implicitly or explicitly and to make a push back against the management to do what they believe is the right thing which can be termed as "guerrilla government" (p. xi). According to O'Leary majority of the guerrilla governments occur because of the inevitable tension between bureaucracy and democracy that will never go away and they are undetectable because of uninvolving world of bureaucracy (pg. 3, 8). This tension in turn create ethical and management challenges including the harsh realities which all the public servants must learn to steer. To explain these tensions O'Leary uses three lenses: Bureaucratic politics, Organizations and Management and Ethics with the help of three in–depth case studies and 21 mini cases. These case studies involve the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Ireland Tradition and Dissent Humanities: Tradition and Dissent TMA03 – Option 1 Ireland: the Invention of Tradition How useful are the concepts of "tradition" and "dissent" in understanding attitudes to the built heritage of Ireland? The two concepts of "tradition" and "dissent" are extremely useful in understanding the built heritage of Ireland. To understand the differing attitudes to the built heritage of Ireland is to contemplate the historical accounts, stories and legends that fabricate traditions and incite dissent. The concept of tradition is associated with the passing down through generations, beliefs, thoughts and actions ("tradition", n.d) and dissent derives from a desire to publicly protest against the traditions and against those holding the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This small step to independence by a group of dissenters was able to use the built heritage site of Tara to invoke within the Irish people a sense of their lost traditionalism and new found fervor for nationalism (Laurence, 2008, p.159). Nevertheless, the continual dominance of British rule saw no substantial social and economic changes for Catholics as they were still"steeped in habitual misery" (Finn & Lynch, 1995, p.24). At Daniel O'Connell's burial site, his supporters erected the tallest round tower in Ireland. The round tower is a historical symbol of Irish Christianity. This enabled dissenters to create new traditions to speak to future generations through the visual power of a symbolic monument. At his request, O 'Connell's heart was buried in Rome, the home of the Catholic Church (Burke et al. 2008) By the beginning of the 19th century, the Cromwellian policies of plantation and land confiscation were evident on the landscapes of country estates. Landownership was the domain of the privileged minority. In 1804, up to 10,000 landlords, within a population of 5.4 million, were almost exclusively Protestant; only 5% of land in Catholic hands ("History of Landed Estates in Ireland, n.d). This leads to another asset to the built heritage of Ireland, known as "The Big House". The Big House is the country residence of the landlord. At the beginning of the ... • 37. Criminalization Of Culture And The Rise Of Dissent Summary Ernesto Aguilar and Melissa Chiprin's article "Criminalization of Culture and the Rise of Dissent" examines the U.S. justice system's use of discriminatory treatment towards African American citizens in order to maintain social order (41). The state oppresses minority races through the use of racism and criminal injustice (42). Furthermore, the majority of the population has limited knowledge on the history of enslavement; thus, they are unaware of past events that have led to an increase in the number of incarcerated African Americans (43). The present U.S. criminal justice system is a reflection of European colonialism and imperialism (44). Moreover, the article illustrates the immense amount of racism that exists within current American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Society must recognize that the history of enslavement has ultimately led to injustice within the U.S. criminal justice system; this is the preliminary step to mitigate racial inequity of African American citizens. Aguilar and Chiprin's article is organized into distinct sections that build on each other. The introduction presents readers with the authors' main argument and sub–points. The following section illustrates the history of European colonialism and enslavement; both of which are related to present racism in the United States. The remaining three sections explore the effects of criminalization on African American citizens. Throughout Aguilar and Chiprin's review of racial inequity, the authors' assumptions are stated, and not implied. Thus, within each section, the authors articulate their principal point, and then use multiple sources as evidence to confirm their thesis. The assumptions used by Aguilar and Chiprin are valid not only because of their in depth examination of the subject, but also because the sources, which are information provided by external experts, relate directly to the thesis of this article. Throughout the article, Aguilar and Chiprin's point of view regarding discrimination towards African American citizens within the United States justice system ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Technological Revolution Has Changed The Access Of... 1.0 Introduction The advent of the technological revolution has fundamentally changed the access that citizens within a democracy have to sensitive and private information about governments, organisations, workplaces and fellow citizens. It is incumbent upon individuals to honour the privacy of this information. The protection of sensitive information is considered paramount, yet anyone with information that they feel is in the public interest and is faced with no avenues to make their concerns known is turning to the internet as a 'platform for the swift dissemination of material and a layer of anonymity' (Savage 2013) and this new era of what is known as whistleblowing has given rise to cyberethics. According to the Congressional Research Service, whistleblowing is defined as "making a disclosure evidencing illegal or improper government (and corporate) activities" (Whitaker cited in Koh, 2012). The individuals who make these disclosures are termed whistleblowers, and while the information they expose is protected by legislation and codes of conduct, they are usually not afforded the same level of protection, and indeed, are open to prosecution for breaking the law. The purpose of this report is to evaluate whether all citizens in a democracy should be protected from criminalisation for exposing nepotism and corruption. 2.0 Methods As whistleblowing in a cyber context is a new field of study, there is limited quantitative research available. The report will discuss ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Thomas Frank's Article 'Commodify Your Dissent' In the article "Commodify Your Dissent", Thomas Frank argues about his point that is based on the American cultural ideas in the 1950s. There are a lot of differences between two lifestyles, such as education, technology, and fashion. I strongly agree with Thomas Frank that marketing no longer promotes conformity, but, rather, promotes "never–ending self–fulfillment" and "constantly updated individualism". Because humans' interest and trend are changing over time, humans' needs gradually increase. Back then, people only use magazines and TV to advertise their products. Nowadays, the technology is developed significantly, so advertisers have to change to match the society's trends to get customers attention. Moreover, they have a lot of good ... • 40. Commodify Your Dissent, By Norton And Frank Is it actually us, as an individual, who chooses our identity? Perhaps marketers have jurisdiction over our character by selling us their creations. Anne Norton describes in her essay, "Signs of Shopping," that shopping is the true passage way to one 's character. Similarly, in the essay "Commodify Your Dissent," Thomas Frank discusses how these corporations allow one to flaunt their rebellious personality. Both Norton and Frank believe that one's individuality is held in the hands of businesses. Each store can attract specific types of people while promoting laziness and rebellion. For decades now, humans have always been so quick to judge a book by it's cover; one's clothes help create the cover to this book. Norton brings up various styles individuals wear and how it displays their character to the world. For instance, "a display in the window of polo provides an embarrassment of semiotic riches" (Norton 88). One who wears the brand polo is someone who is of the upper class due to it's vogue aesthetic and price tags. This goes for any high end designer brand like Michael Kors or Chanel; if one is seen covered in such a luxury, there is no doubt they are living in wealth. By wearing this clothing, one is being told to attain the typical preeminent behavior of the rich, having an attitude that they surpass all others. Moreover, Frank focuses on a particular group who have this rock and roll flare. He believes "we consume not to fit in, but to prove, on the surface at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
