EFAS Table
Using the information gathered from your SWOT analysis conducted in Unit II, create an external factor analysis (EFAS) table for the company you researched. Use Microsoft Word, or a similar program, to create your table. It should have five columns. The first column heading should be titled External Factors, the second column should be titled Weight, the third column
should be titled Rating, the fourth column should be titled Weighted Score, and the fifth column should be titled Comments. You may also use the provided template by clicking here.
Click here to see an example EFAS table.
1. In the External Factors column, list at least six opportunities you saw in the company you researched. Underneath the opportunities, list at least six threats you saw in the company you researched.
2. In the Weight column, assign an importance factor to each of these issues. It is important to note that whenever working with weighted averages, the weight column should always total 1.0, or 100%, regardless of how many factors are included in the EFAS analysis. It is up to the analyst to decide how much weight each individual external factor is assigned based on the probable impact on a particular company’s current strategic position. The higher the weight, the more important the factor to the current and future success of the company. An important factor may have a weight of 0.5 (50%), while a less important factor may have a weight of .05 (5%). When all is finished, however, all factor weights should total 1.0, or 100%. You may not be privy to the exact information for this company, so in some cases you will need to use your best judgment. (You will justify your weighting in column five.)
3. In the Rating column, assign a rating factor from 5.0-1.0 (5.0 is outstanding; 1.0 is poor). These ratings are based on the company’s response to that particular factor. It is your judgment call on how the company is currently dealing with each specific factor. Once again, you may need to make an estimate in this area if you are not privy to all of the information. (You will justify your weighting in column five.)
4. In the Weighted Score column, multiply the weight from column 2 by the rating in column 3 to get the factor’s weighted score.
5. In the Comments column, explain why a particular factor was selected and how its weight and rating were estimated.
6. At the bottom of column 4, add the weighted scores for the external factors. Is the company doing better or worse than others in the same industry? Complete this answer underneath your table.
Format your assignment using APA Style. Use your own words, and include citations and references as needed to avoid plagiarism.

Take a look at the following graph:
Notice how two countries dominated the global economy until the 19th century? Do you also see
that those two countries have started making their presence felt over the past four decades? That is
an example of a mega-story that we can begin to understand through the lens of economic
geography.
In the university catalog, we have provided a short description of this course:
Course addresses the important role of geography in the highly inter-connected global
economy, by examining the spatial patterns in population, resources, and the primary,
secondary, and tertiary economic sectors. Course will also highlight the relationship between
economics and the environment, and explore sustainable development.
Here’s how I want to parse that catalog description: I want you to:
Appreciate and understand the role played by geography and geographic barriers in the
development of the world economy and within national economies;
Understand the dynamics of the global economy, resource use, and the relationship between
population and the resource base;
Understand location theory and the rationale for the location of industry, cities, and systems
in their current location; and
Develop an understanding and appreciation of the solutions devised by societies to
economic problems
Thus, the Outcomes:
Explain how economic activities are located and organized in space
Explain how interregional differences in economic well-being may come about, and how
such processes affect your own daily life and professional plans; and
Develop conceptual, analytical, and critical thinking skills that will be useful for courses in
geography, and in other branches of the social sciences as well.
The course is more than merely about an LACC requirement
I have excerpted the following from the National Geography Standards in order to highlight the
importance of this course to be infinitely more than merely fulfilling the LACC requirements:
The goal of the National Geography Standards is to produce a geographically informed
person who sees meaning in the arrangement of things in space and applies a spatial
perspective to life situations. The geographically informed person knows and understands:

*Formal Assessment Guidelines – POTUS Foreign Policy Memo
Introduction
This project is an opportunity to discuss what you think should be the highest priority (national interest) in the future of American foreign policy. Completing this activity is a mandatory component of this course. It serves as the standard course assessment for all GOVT 2305 students. Failure to submit this project in its entirety will result in a failing grade for the course. There are three steps to completing this project.
Step 1: Identify the issue and how the US government is currently addressing it. Then, identify strategies that could be used to improve those efforts.
Step 2: Gather three scholarly research articles that address the issue you selected and offer suggestions for improvement.
Step 3: Prepare a formal policy memo for the President of the United States (POTUS). This is the only part of the project you will turn in.
The grading standards used to assess the quality of your work for this project will be detailed in a grading rubric, which will be provided during the semester.
It is strongly suggested that student read ahead and use the library database during the first week of the course to begin researching a topic. This project requires carefully planning throughout the semester. Refer to the course calendar for the specific due date. The final product is to be submitted as a single file via the submission guidelines identified by the instructor.
Step 1 – Identifying the Issue
A. Throughout chapter 14 of the textbook, you will find traditional methods and core issues used to create the foreign policy agenda. Use this information as a starting point for identifying the subject of your own research.
B. Next, identify a single issue that you feel should be the highest priority in American foreign policy and specifically how the nation should go about pursuing that policy.
Step 2 - Gathering Sources
A. Find three high-quality reference materials (articles published in an academic journal) using the following criteria:
· The article must be no more than ten years old, a minimum of five pages in length, and should meet the standards of college level material.
· Carefully choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
· Newspaper articles, magazine articles, textbooks and items of the like are considered "supplemental sources" on the collegiate level and are not quality research materials.
· Dictionaries, Encyclopedias (including Wikipedia), Almanacs, or an Atlas are reference materials and should not be listed in any works cited page on the collegiate level.
· Properly document your sources in your memo and on a works cited page.
Step 3 – The Memo
A. Your paper should quickly explain how the President can take your advice and put it into action. He is a busy man, so keep it short and to the point.
B. This document should quickly articulate (in 2-3 paragraphs) the relevance of the issue, your policy position (citing the support.

Subject:
Overview / Purpose [choose one appropriate heading]
Use this section to explain the purpose of the memo and an overview of the document. For example: This memo summarizes the issues facing the University of Oregon in relation to climate change and the options for campus changes. In the following sections, I review climate issues relevant to the UO campus and the possible steps that can be taken. The final section presents three policy options for the University.
Context / Background [choose one appropriate heading]
Use this section to set the context or give the background for your boss or your audience. You may need to remind them of the task, background or how it relates to decisions they have to make. For example: At its June meeting, the UO Board of Trustees requested that the UO prepare a climate action plan. In response, the President appointed a Climate Action Team, and for the past several months this team has been working on this task…and so forth.
Information / Body / Analysis [choose one appropriate heading]
Present your information here and keep in mind some key rules:
· Keep it simple stupid (KISS): your goal is to summarize the highlights
· Your document should have a clear logic flow with connected points and themes
· Use paragraphs with a clear topic sentence for your main themes
· Use bullets and numbering when you are presenting lists (don’t replace paragraphs with bullets)
· Use references or other information to direct the reader to more detailed information
· Use selected charts or graphs if they do a better job of presenting complex information
Findings / Conclusions / Action Items [choose one appropriate heading]
This will vary a lot depending on the purpose, audience, and the task assigned to the memo writer. Information should be presented in a neutral or balanced manner with proper documentation of information. It is not an opinion or advocacy piece, but rather findings based on supporting evidence.
· No: Can you imagine a world where Oregon rivers are parched and the forests are burning…
· No: I think climate change is really important so the university should…
· Yes: Based on the information I have gathered, the major sources of university emissions are…
· Yes: The climate action team has identified several policy options for the university to consider…
Sources / Works Cited [choose one appropriate heading]
Use a standard reference system in your memo—either the author/date system (Daniels and Daniels 2003, 2-3) or a footnote system.[footnoteRef:1] Include a reference list –OR–footnotes.[footnoteRef:2] Examples of both are listed below: [1: Daniels and Daniels. 2003. Essay Option C Developing Historical and Cross-Cultural Insight.docxSALU18
Essay Option C: Developing Historical and Cross-Cultural Insight
Both Hayao Miyazaki and Zhang Yimou produce socially and culturally relevant artistic forms that illustrate the connections between culture, identity, and the tension involved in the relationship between citizens and their governments. Although both film-makers use very different looking films, they share an ability to address some of the most important questions regarding what it means to be a citizen of China and Japan. In this essay you will draw out the major themes of one film by either director (a list of acceptable films follows, you are limited to the films on this list without exception). Prior to viewing the films, reflect on the questions below. Then view the film and take notes on the film’s storyline, presentation and visual elements. Consider how the film director has consciously, through their cinematic choices addressed the issues raised in the questions. In particular, both Yimou and Miyazaki have created films with portrayals of traditional Confucian, Shinto and Buddhist values that also offer insight into their viewpoints concerning the role that such traditions continue to play in the post-modern era. The purpose of the assignment is to explore the way in which politics and art interact in an Asian cultural context, and also to develop expository writing skills.
Questions:
1. What is the larger message of the film regarding identity issues?
2. How do the characters in the novel represent different understandings of Chinese and Japanese culture and traditional values?
3. How do these characteristics relate to what was discussed in class regarding Shinto, Buddhist and Confucian value orderings – how do these value orderings condition the lives of the characters in the novel?
4. How have you come to understand what it means to be Chinese and/or Japanese through your reading of the film?
5. How does the film-maker use location, including the natural world to address their subject?
Your essay should draw on material from the film that you choose as well as the text and class discussions. Be sure to cite material appropriately (see attached guidelines),Use in text citations with a bibliography at the end of the paper. DO NOT USE FOOTNOTES.
Technical Instructions: Your paper should be 4-6 pages long and no longer than six pages. Include your title on the first page of the essay, hit return 3 times and begin writing. Your essay should be typed in Times New Roman font with margins no larger than 1 inch all around, double-spaced with page numbers centered in the footer. Be sure to include an introduction that explains your organization and conclusion, which pulls the essay together and presents your observations

Part 2
Take your information from Part 1 and use it to create a Sustainability Plan.
Your sustainability plan should present what, when, and how something is to be sustained and maintained now and into the indefinite future. Your plan can be submitted in a narrative or table format. The Corporation for National and Community Service (n.d.) provides the following list of components that make up a sustainability plan that should be included in your paper or table:
1. Action items: Provide the items or activities that need to be addressed or that need to occur. Refer to the following example:
My plan for sustaining clean air in my community is to develop an education program about air pollution-generating activities and their effects, schedule a presentation day and time, invite community participants, and research the effects of air pollution.
2. Order of action items: Discuss how the action items in Step 1 will align or occur. One event or activity should occur before another; thus, order the items into steps similar to the following:
1) Research the effects of air pollution.
2) Develop an education program.
3) Schedule a presentation day and time.
4) Invite the community.
3. Action steps: Explain how you are going to conduct the action items. How are you going to make each item or activity happen? Include individuals or groups who will help you conduct these activities. Use the following as a guide:
In order to schedule a presentation day and time, I will attend next month’s community homeowner’s association (HOA) meeting and request permission from the board to add it to the following month’s agenda.
4. Timeline: Estimate when you are going to conduct the action items, such as “In months 1–3, I will complete the research.” If an item or activity does not have a specific conclusion time, indicate that it is ongoing.
The following is a sample of how you might incorporate your sustainability plan into a table format—keep in mind this is an incomplete plan:
Action Items

2003. Environmental Planning Handbook. Chicago, IL: American Planning Association Press, pp. 2-3.] [2: Ibid, p.5]

1. Unit 3: Synoptic Preparation Task SUPERPOWER GEOGRPAHIES: EAST ASIAN NEIGHBOURS
Introduction
Section B of the Unit 3 exam is synoptic.
Synopticity is crucial in this exam; you must show synoptic links to access the highest levels of the
mark scheme. Often students struggle to understand and demonstrate synopticity; on its simplest
level it means ‘making links’. You can show synopticity in the following ways:
1. Make links between different topics in a Unit, and/or between Units.
2. Use the themes of Unit 3 – players, actions, futures
3. Link the situation to a global theme e.g. climate change, sustainability
4. Use models and theories
5. Compare one situation to another (parallel examples)
Preparation Tasks: Task 1-3 are getting to know the resources, 4-5 are getting to know the area, 6-13
are getting to know the issues
1. Read the resource booklet carefully. For each resource start a new page in your exercise
book. State what the resource is (text, map, graph etc.), briefly summarise the key points it
shows & note any questions you have about the resource.
2. Complete the vocabulary sheet to provide definitions for all the key terms used in the
booklet.
3. Look at the 5 websites identified on p.7. Try to create a summary of facts from each website
(approx. 1 side of A4 – focus on players, actions & futures).
4. Complete some Atlas work. Make a list of the physical and human geography of the area to
help you understand the geographical context of the area.
5. Produce a detailed social, economic and environmental profile of the countries in the
Himalaya region. (Examiners hint 2011: during the pre-release phase, focus on different
countries within the region, not just the region overall).
6. Using p.3 and the internet create a timeline to show the territorial disputes; make sure you
include the causes/reasons and the countries involved. Consider input/support from UK
&USA if applicable.
7. Using page 4, compare the military strength of US and Asian countries. What social,
economic and environmental impacts could this military presence have?
2. Unit 3: Synoptic Preparation Task SUPERPOWER GEOGRPAHIES: EAST ASIAN NEIGHBOURS
8. Draw 2 concentric circles; in the inner one describe China’s level of development & give
indicators to support this (Fig 6). In the outer circle try to explain the factors determining the
level of development (page 5 & research). Repeat for the other countries.
9. Study the sustainability quadrant and Page 6. Use the 4 principles of sustainability (Equity,
Public Participation, Futurity and environment) and consider to what extent further
development in China and Japan is sustainable.
10. Create a table to investigate the viewpoints from p.7
Viewpoint Summary of Opinion Evidence to Support Reliability
11. Create a table to show the challenges and opportunities for each of the 4 countries to
develop as a superpower (HINT: criteria are size, military strength, economic power,
resources & population. Also consider sphere of influence & cultural power)
12. Identify synoptic links between water conflict and other areas of the AS and A2 course. You
may find a mind map useful to show multiple links or a table to identify specific links.
13. Consider these websites as a starting point for extra research:
www.e-ir.info/2012/03/08/development-and-geopolitics-in-east-asia/This is a very in-depth article
about the situation in South Korea. It has some mention of the surrounding region.
www.eastasiaforum.org/2011/11/24/regional-economic-integration-and-geopolitics/This might be
of use the initial article is interesting but biased, there may be more on the site.
http://www.globalissues.org/news/2012/09/29/14927 interesting, especially some of the links at
the bottom of the page.
(Examiners Hint 2010: You can use other websites, newspaper articles, books, magazines &
DVD’s. In the exam, look for places to insert key pieces of extra information).
3. Unit 3: Synoptic Preparation Task SUPERPOWER GEOGRPAHIES: EAST ASIAN NEIGHBOURS
Suggestions of essay titles for Synoptic paper.
There are 3 enquiry areas linked to ‘Superpower Geographies’. It is possible there will be one essay
title to linked to each of these, but be aware this is not necessarily the case! Below are the 3 enquiry
areas with some possible exam essay titles suggested.
Remember essay structure and geographical vocabulary is key. The examiners will credit any
relevant diagrams/models/tables etc. Make sure you show synopticity by linking areas of the course
to your explanations.
Superpower Geographies
Assess the human and physical factors which have led to a rise in China’s power.
Explain why geopolitics in the region is complex.
Evaluate whether military strength or economic development is more significant in this
region.
Evaluate whether the disputes in East Asia are a threat to the stability and continuing
development of the area as a whole.
The role of superpowers
Discuss the environmental, social and economic impacts ofinward investment.
Evaluate the ability of Asian countries to exert influence through economic blocs and
international groups.
To what extent does China’s growing investment and influence in other parts of the world
represent a form of neo-colonialism?
Explain the role of geo-politics in helping Asian countries develop further.
Superpower Futures
To what extent is East Asia currently leading the world in terms of economic and technical
development?
Evaluate the arguments for and against China becoming a superpower in future.
Examine how future actions will effect geopolitics in the region and globally.
Assess how effectively China and other SE Asian countries are gaining world influence by
investing outside the region.
Assess whether continued development in East Asia is sustainable.
Examiners Hints:
For a 14-16 mark question, the ‘average’ candidate would write about 1 ½ - 2 sides.
Make sure that ‘assess’ and ‘evaluate’ questions have a summary/conclusion as this will
usually be enough to provide some evidence of higher skills i.e. an ability to weigh up
different perspectives and move towards a conclusion
Make sure you include synoptic examples and ideas, but these only need to be brief. They
also need to be relevant. Some synoptic examples leave examiners scratching their heads to
see how the example relates to the question set!
