Unit 3: Synoptic Preparation Task SUPERPOWER GEOGRPAHIES: EAST ASIAN NEIGHBOURS
Introduction
Section B of the Unit 3 exam is synoptic.
Synopticity is crucial in this exam; you must show synoptic links to access the highest levels of the
mark scheme. Often students struggle to understand and demonstrate synopticity; on its simplest
level it means ‘making links’. You can show synopticity in the following ways:
1. Make links between different topics in a Unit, and/or between Units.
2. Use the themes of Unit 3 – players, actions, futures
3. Link the situation to a global theme e.g. climate change, sustainability
4. Use models and theories
5. Compare one situation to another (parallel examples)
Preparation Tasks: Task 1-3 are getting to know the resources, 4-5 are getting to know the area, 6-13
are getting to know the issues
1. Read the resource booklet carefully. For each resource start a new page in your exercise
book. State what the resource is (text, map, graph etc.), briefly summarise the key points it
shows & note any questions you have about the resource.
2. Complete the vocabulary sheet to provide definitions for all the key terms used in the
booklet.
3. Look at the 5 websites identified on p.7. Try to create a summary of facts from each website
(approx. 1 side of A4 – focus on players, actions & futures).
4. Complete some Atlas work. Make a list of the physical and human geography of the area to
help you understand the geographical context of the area.
5. Produce a detailed social, economic and environmental profile of the countries in the
Himalaya region. (Examiners hint 2011: during the pre-release phase, focus on different
countries within the region, not just the region overall).
6. Using p.3 and the internet create a timeline to show the territorial disputes; make sure you
include the causes/reasons and the countries involved. Consider input/support from UK
&USA if applicable.
7. Using page 4, compare the military strength of US and Asian countries. What social,
economic and environmental impacts could this military presence have?
Unit 3: Synoptic Preparation Task SUPERPOWER GEOGRPAHIES: EAST ASIAN NEIGHBOURS
8. Draw 2 concentric circles; in the inner one describe China’s level of development & give
indicators to support this (Fig 6). In the outer circle try to explain the factors determining the
level of development (page 5 & research). Repeat for the other countries.
9. Study the sustainability quadrant and Page 6. Use the 4 principles of sustainability (Equity,
Public Participation, Futurity and environment) and consider to what extent further
development in China and Japan is sustainable.
10. Create a table to investigate the viewpoints from p.7
Viewpoint Summary of Opinion Evidence to Support Reliability
11. Create a table to show the challenges and opportunities for each of the 4 countries to
develop as a superpower (HINT: criteria are size, military strength, economic power,
resources & population. Also consider sphere of influence & cultural power)
12. Identify synoptic links between water conflict and other areas of the AS and A2 course. You
may find a mind map useful to show multiple links or a table to identify specific links.
13. Consider these websites as a starting point for extra research:
www.e-ir.info/2012/03/08/development-and-geopolitics-in-east-asia/This is a very in-depth article
about the situation in South Korea. It has some mention of the surrounding region.
www.eastasiaforum.org/2011/11/24/regional-economic-integration-and-geopolitics/This might be
of use the initial article is interesting but biased, there may be more on the site.
http://www.globalissues.org/news/2012/09/29/14927 interesting, especially some of the links at
the bottom of the page.
(Examiners Hint 2010: You can use other websites, newspaper articles, books, magazines &
DVD’s. In the exam, look for places to insert key pieces of extra information).
Unit 3: Synoptic Preparation Task SUPERPOWER GEOGRPAHIES: EAST ASIAN NEIGHBOURS
Suggestions of essay titles for Synoptic paper.
There are 3 enquiry areas linked to ‘Superpower Geographies’. It is possible there will be one essay
title to linked to each of these, but be aware this is not necessarily the case! Below are the 3 enquiry
areas with some possible exam essay titles suggested.
Remember essay structure and geographical vocabulary is key. The examiners will credit any
relevant diagrams/models/tables etc. Make sure you show synopticity by linking areas of the course
to your explanations.
Superpower Geographies
Assess the human and physical factors which have led to a rise in China’s power.
Explain why geopolitics in the region is complex.
Evaluate whether military strength or economic development is more significant in this
region.
Evaluate whether the disputes in East Asia are a threat to the stability and continuing
development of the area as a whole.
The role of superpowers
Discuss the environmental, social and economic impacts ofinward investment.
Evaluate the ability of Asian countries to exert influence through economic blocs and
international groups.
To what extent does China’s growing investment and influence in other parts of the world
represent a form of neo-colonialism?
Explain the role of geo-politics in helping Asian countries develop further.
Superpower Futures
To what extent is East Asia currently leading the world in terms of economic and technical
development?
Evaluate the arguments for and against China becoming a superpower in future.
Examine how future actions will effect geopolitics in the region and globally.
Assess how effectively China and other SE Asian countries are gaining world influence by
investing outside the region.
Assess whether continued development in East Asia is sustainable.
Examiners Hints:
For a 14-16 mark question, the ‘average’ candidate would write about 1 ½ - 2 sides.
Make sure that ‘assess’ and ‘evaluate’ questions have a summary/conclusion as this will
usually be enough to provide some evidence of higher skills i.e. an ability to weigh up
different perspectives and move towards a conclusion
Make sure you include synoptic examples and ideas, but these only need to be brief. They
also need to be relevant. Some synoptic examples leave examiners scratching their heads to
see how the example relates to the question set!
