Prefixes are words attached to the front of other words to change their meaning. Metric prefixes are used with units of measurement to denote multiples and submultiples of units for easier counting of zeros. Scientific notation is a way of writing large or small numbers in a standard form by moving the decimal point and using an exponent, such as writing 0.00004 as 4x10^-5 where the decimal is moved left and the exponent is negative, or writing 1000 as 1x10^3 where the decimal is moved right and the exponent is positive.
