Working at Boomtrain personalization is part of everything we do. But let me tell you how I first came to appreciate the business potential of data-driven personalization in the context of marketing.
Prior to Boomtrain I worked in the mobile gaming industry as a data-scientist turned performance marketer. Like any marketer we were constantly trying to improve the engagement of our communications with players. We were also interested in improve the onboarding experience on the product itself. We subscribed to the data-driven philosophy so we tracked user behavior and defined KPIs and ran product and marketing A/B tests to drive improvements. However, after seeing some initial improvement our efforts never seemed to deliver the engagement lift we hoped for regardless of how many new variations in creative or copy we tested.
Later we realized that our blocker was that we were talking to our entire player base as if there we’re a single generic persona. Everyone got the same weekly emails and had the exact same in-game experience. Eventually we were able to segment our player-base as a first step toward true 1:1 personalization. By analyzing the player-behavior that we had diligently been collecting we arrived at 2 actionable segmentation: hard-core & casual gamers. Finally we were able to start communicating to these groups in a relevent way…(gives examples about noobs and tutorials vs. hardcore wanted to get straight to the action.)
