Sustainability Concepts in the Design of High-Rise buildings: the case of Dia...StroNGER2012
One of the evocative structural design solutions for sustainable tall buildings is embraced by the diagrid (diagonal grid) structural scheme. Diagrid, with a perimeter structural configuration characterized by a narrow grid of diagonal members involved both in gravity and in lateral load resistance, has emerged as a new design trend for tall-shaped complex structures, and is becoming increasingly popular due to aesthetics and structural performance. Since it requires less structural steel than a conventional steel frame, it provides for a more sustainable structure. This study focuses on the structural performance of a steel tall building, using FEM nonlinear analyses. Numerical comparisons between a traditional outrigger system and different diagrid configurations (with three different diagrid inclinations) are presented for a building of 40 stories, with a total height of 160m, and a footprint of 36m x 36m. The sustainability of the building (in terms of structural steel weight saving) is assessed, together with the structural behavior.
Eneida Pinon's master's thesis examines Japanese architectural designs that emphasize transparency and connection to the exterior, allowing the movement of people inside to be visible. The thesis presents case studies of the NA House by Sou Fujimoto and Tokyu Plaza by Hiroshi Nakamura, which use glass and open spaces to blur boundaries between interior and exterior. It also discusses Renzo Piano's Centre Pompidou, which places its circulation on the outside of the building. The document includes diagrams for a proposed Miami sports museum site, addressing pedestrian access, climate, density, views and zoning.

Fire safety-in-high-rise-apartment-buildingsFerit Fazliu
This document summarizes fire safety issues in high-rise apartment buildings. It identifies that while fire history does not demonstrate a major problem, high-rise buildings represent a potential for major fire and loss of life due to their size. Key risks include smoke spread through vertical pathways, lack of sprinklers, and difficulties for occupants and firefighters during evacuation and fire response. The document outlines several historic Canadian high-rise fires to illustrate these issues and risks. It also identifies unique fire safety challenges in high-rises related to egress systems, fire department access, natural forces, occupant/fuel density, and vertical utility pathways.
This document provides details about the Janapada Loka folk museum in Karnataka, India. It was founded by Shri. Nagegowda to highlight the state's folk culture. The museum complex includes three main buildings - Lokamahal which displays folk artifacts, Lokamatha Mandira for household items, and Chitrakuteera for photographs of folk culture. The architect designed the buildings to blend with the rural landscape using local materials like bricks and clay tiles. Proper lighting, circulation spaces and structural elements are considered to effectively display the artifacts while remaining cost-effective.
1) High rise buildings are becoming more common due to scarcity of land and demand for space. They are defined differently but generally refer to buildings over 15 meters tall.
2) Foundations for high rise buildings include shallow foundations like spread footings and mat foundations, and deep foundations like piles. Piles transfer load through end bearing or friction along their length.
3) Structural systems for high rise buildings must resist both gravity and lateral loads. Interior systems include rigid frames and shear walls. Exterior systems such as tube and diagrid systems resist loads along the building perimeter.

Urban acupuncture is a theory that uses small-scale interventions in select areas to transform the larger urban context, similar to how acupuncture relieves stress in the human body. Sites are chosen based on social, economic, and ecological factors through community engagement. It favors localized projects over massive renewal and empowers citizens and creativity. Examples discussed include Treasure Hill community in Taipei, work by architect Marco Casagranda, and initiatives by Gordon Matta-Clark and Jaime Lerner. Placemaking is also discussed as a community-driven process that creates public spaces promoting health, happiness, and well-being.
This document discusses the concept of urban acupuncture and provides examples of it. Urban acupuncture involves inserting small, targeted interventions into the urban fabric to enhance quality of life. It gives five examples of successful urban acupuncture projects: parks, museums, and waterfront areas that featured unique architecture, entertainment, history, transportation access, and sense of place. The document also provides three examples of potential urban acupuncture projects in Jackson, Mississippi and outlines several elements that can comprise urban acupuncture interventions at the street, public place, and neighborhood scales, such as community gardens, stormwater reservoirs, public art, distinctive architecture, and bicycle lanes.

Museums are nowadays among the most popular projects for the public, the concept of thermal comfort in museums is often treated after the realization. Even if in the design, the architect shows a particular intention to work with daylight which is considered for these projects as main, the architect often considers certain elements that have an influence on the energy balance of these projects such as: orientation, building materials. The museum route is the key to the success of any museum project, it is the space of the visitor, the space in which he is invaded by sensations. In this study, we will first evaluate the thermal comfort in the museum as a whole (building) and then through its route. The objective is to guide reflection in the design of the museum towards the route in order to reduce energy consumption. In order to carry out our study, some European museums were analysed by means of simulation, according to the thermal comfort of their designs for the most unfavourable conditions, then by a thermal analysis of the museum route according to the segmentation principle using the average radiant temperature. This method allowed us to bring out correspondences between the architectural form and the route. Finally, the segmentation method constitutes the basis of a new methodological approach called "thermal topology" based on the discontinuities of the temperatures in the route.

within the virtual realm, resulting in the idea of an open
architecture.
What justifies public and private spaces in a society where
information can be easily accessible with mapping and tracking
technologies? Or does a segregation between public and private
spaces even matter?
These questions will serve as a basis to create a space that is
adaptable by series of events – a space that reacts and interacts
with the users' patterns. This is a proposal for an architectural
platform that is constantly active and an environment that serves
both the actor and the spectator.
