and managed to meet or to pursue collective goals.
 OS helps to understand how an organization solve
problems, how they maximize efficiency and
productivity and how they meet expectations of
stakeholders.
 This study is done at MRF Ltd., Kottayam and get an
understanding of the structure and functioning of the
organization.
Primary Objectives:
 To understand the organizational structure
 Functioning of various departments and activities
undertaken by them.
Secondary Objective:
 To know the history and growth of the company.
 To acquire knowledge about strength, weakness,
opportunities and threats of the organization.
 Madras Rubber Factory (MRF) is a major tyre
manufacturing company located in Chennai.
 It was started in the year 1946 by K.M. Mammen
Mappillai as a small toy balloon manufacturing unit
at Thiruvottiyur, Chennai.
 It is engaged in the production of tyres, tubes, flaps,
tread rubber, and conveyor belt.
 It also provides paints (Vapocure), toys (Funskool)
and sports goods.
 MRF Ltd., Kottayam unit was set up in 1969 at
Vadavathoor about 7km from Kottayam .
 There are 3 shifts of 8 hours each.
 MRFEU, MRFEA, MRFES are the trade unions.
 Tube plant, tyre plant, mixing plant, PCTR plant are
the plants in Kottayam unit.
 Automotive tyres, non tyre products, paints and coats
are their products.
 There are 1738 employees in total
 Production departments
 HR department
 Accounting department
 Quality Assurance department
 Safety and Security department
 Technical department
 Industrial Engineering department
 Engineering department

 Lack of individual initiatives.
 Strong trade union activities
 Lack of marketing departments at the plants
 Lack of commitment from employees.

 Joint ventures or tie up with foreign automobile
companies
 The modernization of tubeless tyre.
Threats:-
 Fluctuations in price of natural rubber and other
materials.
 Steady competition from other leading
manufacturers.
 Threat of cheap import of tyres.
 Changing technology
 Entrance of new players.
 Good working environment
 The usage of modern and updated technology.
 The company is eco friendly
 There are no proper transportation facilities for workers.
 The computerization of work of various departments is
not properly done.
 Set up a marketing department in the unit.
 The company website should be updated often
 Incentives should be given to the best performers
 Utilize the railways to transport materials.
 Provide transportation facilities to employees.
 Raw materials should be purchased at proper time.
 MRF mobilized itself as a market leader.
 It provides high quality products to its customers.
 A cordial relationship is maintained between all
departments for smooth functioning
 MRF has achieved these heights due to the hard
work of employees and commitment to provide
quality products to customers.

  • 2.  An organization is a social unit of people structured and managed to meet or to pursue collective goals.  OS helps to understand how an organization solve problems, how they maximize efficiency and productivity and how they meet expectations of stakeholders.  This study is done at MRF Ltd., Kottayam and get an understanding of the structure and functioning of the organization.
  • 3. Primary Objectives:  To understand the organizational structure  Functioning of various departments and activities undertaken by them. Secondary Objective:  To know the history and growth of the company.  To acquire knowledge about strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of the organization.
  • 4.  Madras Rubber Factory (MRF) is a major tyre manufacturing company located in Chennai.  It was started in the year 1946 by K.M. Mammen Mappillai as a small toy balloon manufacturing unit at Thiruvottiyur, Chennai.  It is engaged in the production of tyres, tubes, flaps, tread rubber, and conveyor belt.  It also provides paints (Vapocure), toys (Funskool) and sports goods.
  • 5.  MRF Ltd., Kottayam unit was set up in 1969 at Vadavathoor about 7km from Kottayam .  There are 3 shifts of 8 hours each.  MRFEU, MRFEA, MRFES are the trade unions.  Tube plant, tyre plant, mixing plant, PCTR plant are the plants in Kottayam unit.  Automotive tyres, non tyre products, paints and coats are their products.  There are 1738 employees in total

Opportunities:-  Growth in the economy  Increased access to global source for raw material.  Joint ventures or tie up with foreign automobile companies  The modernization of tubeless tyre.
  • 10. Threats:-  Fluctuations in price of natural rubber and other materials.  Steady competition from other leading manufacturers.  Threat of cheap import of tyres.  Changing technology  Entrance of new players.
  • 11.  Good working environment  The usage of modern and updated technology.  The company is eco friendly  There are no proper transportation facilities for workers.  The computerization of work of various departments is not properly done.
  • 12.  Set up a marketing department in the unit.  The company website should be updated often  Incentives should be given to the best performers  Utilize the railways to transport materials.  Provide transportation facilities to employees.  Raw materials should be purchased at proper time.
  • 13.  MRF mobilized itself as a market leader.  It provides high quality products to its customers.  A cordial relationship is maintained between all departments for smooth functioning  MRF has achieved these heights due to the hard work of employees and commitment to provide quality products to customers.
