Conversation analysis (CA) is an approach to studying social interaction and language use. It examines how participants maintain social order through conversation. There are three main elements of CA: turn-taking, adjacency pairs, and sequential implicativeness. Turn-taking refers to how people alternate speaking in conversations. Adjacency pairs are sequences of related utterances between two speakers, like a question and answer. Sequential implicativeness means each statement is linked to the previous one. There are also pauses, overlaps, and backchannels that provide meaning in conversations.
