A basketball performer has to acquire many skills.
Three basic skills in basketball can be identified as
dribbling, shooting and the defensive stance.
Describe the variety of movements at the different
joints that take place when performing these skills.

A healthy active lifestyle and your
           muscular system.
• In this topic you will learn the names of a number
of muscles and the different types of muscular
  contractions.
• You will look at the effects of training on the
muscular system and the long term effects of
  regular participation.
• The potential for injury, how diet can help to
  build and repair muscle tissue.
• The effects of performance enhancing drugs on
  the muscular system.
• Name the muscles that you know!
The Muscular system

• To know the major muscle groups
• Know which activities benefit from them and
the role of muscles in movement.

Location and function of major
                  muscles
There are 11 specific muscles you need to know.
1. Deltoid
2. Trapezius
3. Latissimus Dorsi
4. Pectorals
5. Abdominals
6. Biceps
7. Triceps On your sheet underneath
8. Gluteals each muscle state the
                                              movement it produces and
9. Quadriceps where it takes place
10.Hamstrings
11.Gastrocnemius e.g. The gastrocnemius
                                                 produces plantar flexion
On p 142 the summary table links the muscle with a
                   sporting action.
Write down a different sporting action for 5-11 the
                      muscles.

E.G the abdominal muscles cause flexion at the hips. This
is needed prior to take off in the high jump.

A/A* students – can spell and identify where the 11
major muscle s are and link a sporting action to all
             specifying the movements

C/D student- knows where the 11 major muscles are and
can only link a few to sporting actions with no mention of
                    movement (terms)
Antagonistic pairs
                  (p136)
• The body is moved by muscle groups not by
  individual muscles.
• Muscles can only pull on a bone (when they
contract) to produce movement in one direction.
• So another muscle needs to work in partnership
in order to move in the opposite direction.
• Therefore muscles are arranged in antagonistic
  pairs.
• In your own words explain what antagonistic
  pairs are.
Draw 2 diagrams
• Show the antagonistic muscle pair working at the
knee joint to move the tibia and fibula.

• Extension-
• Prime mover (agonist)= pulling muscle
• Antagonist= relaxing muscle
• Identify these on your diagram
