India would suffer greatly without the contributions of women and girls, who take care of families, pass on culture, and safeguard society. However, many girls in India still do not receive an education due to poverty, social biases against female education, a lack of school facilities and female teachers, and gender biases in curriculums. The 86th constitutional amendment aims to remedy this by making free and compulsory education for all children between ages 6-14 a fundamental right.
