3. INTRODUCTION
Green computing is the study and practice of designing,
manufacturing, using and disposing of computers, servers, and
associated subsystems such as monitors, printers, storage
devices, networking and communications systems efficiently
and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment.
It also lays out four paths along which the environmental
effects of computing should be addressed. Green use, green
disposal, green design, and green manufacturing is the path
for green computing
5. HISTORY
• The term “Green Computing” was probably coined shortly
after the “Energy Star “ program began way back in 1992
.One of the first result of “Green Computing” was the “Sleep
Mode” function of the computer monitors .As the concept
developed “Green Computing” began to ecompass thin
client solution ,energy cost ,accounting, virtulization
practices ,e-Waste,etc.
6. GREEN COMPUTING ! WHY
Computing uses large amounts of energy .the amount of energy
used worldwide by servers(alone) amount to 1% of the world’s total
electricity usage. From 2000 to 2005 a five year period – the energy
used by servers doubled . It is predicted that by 2010 the amount of
energy used by these servers would have increased by upto 70%.
Such use of energy is unsustainable and contributes enormously to
green house gas emissions. Computing hardware is made of some
of the most toxic and dangerous chemicals. The worst part is that
most of these equipments have very short spam of life –sometimes
less than three years . The hardware is not being properly disposed
of ,ending in landfills ,third world countries ,etc
So ultimately the toxic chemicals which are in this hardware end up
polluting the environment.
7. ADVANTAGE OF GREEN COMPUTING
• Sustainable computing means reduced energy
consumption that leads to reduced GHG emissions .
• Green Computing is cost-effective due to less energy usage
and cooling requirements.
• Sustainable IT helps in the preservation and effective
utilization of natural resources.
• It encourages reuse and recyclability that will result in a
lesser number of electronic wastes.
• Green IT uses non- toxic components which do not pose
any health hazard to the end-users.
• It causes a considerable reduction in the quantity of heat
produced from computing devices.
• Sustainable computing inspires people to reduce ,reuse and
recycle.
8. DISADVANTAGE
• The initial implementation is costly.
• Frequent changes in technology.
• Green IT cause more burden to an indivisual.
• The disparity in the level of understanding across various
companies ,professionals and end-users.
• Fewer courses and publications related to green computing.
9. WAYS TO GREEN COMPUTING
• Use energy star labelled products .
• Turn off your computing devices when not in need .
• Use your printers, scanners, webcams, and other associated
IT peripherals only when required.
• Screen savers consume power so do not use them.
• Do not discard your computing devices rather donate or
recycle them.
• Use sleep mode or hibernate features when not using
computers for a short time.
• Use e-mail as the main communication rather than a memo
or fax.
Look for green packaging solutions.
10. FUTURE OF GREEN COMPUTING
A Canadian Company have come up with a solution that turns 1
computer into 10 - Discover Station. Multiple users can work on a
single computer by simply attaching up to 10 monitors, mice and
keyboards. This makes it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by up to
15 tons per year per system and reduce electronic waste by up to
80%.
Another approach for future Green Computing is building big more
and more data centers where data center refers to a centralized
repository, either physical or virtual, for the storage, management,
and dissemination of data and information organized around a
particular body of knowledge or pertaining to a particular business.
11. CONCLUSION
• So far ,consumers have not cared about ecological impact
when buying computers ,they have cared only about speed
and price.
• Now green materials are developed every year, and many
toxic ones are already being replaced by them .
• The greenest computer will not miraculously fall from the
sky one day , it will be the product of years of
improvements.
• The features of a green computer would be like : efficiency,
manufacturing and materials, recyclability, server model,
self-powering and other trends
