Editor's Notes
Hello! My name is Amanda Henry. Thank you for having me.
As I mentioned, my name is Amanda Henry. I am here to address the school board about the benefits of technology in the district and the classroom. I would like to start things off with a video clip.
Technology is part of our everyday life and has become more relevant and essential in education. Our students need to be prepared for the real world. They need to be creative, high-level thinkers who can engage themselves and others through collaboration and communication. The accountability of which we measure their success is through assessment and we want to continue to raise the student achievement to compete in the global economy.
Today, I will argue how educational technology has had a positive impact on education by raising students’ achievement in test scores, promoting higher-level thinking and creativity, as well as, creating effective self learners and staff development. With technology, teachers and schools can provide a high-quality education that will pave a bright future for students’ lives.
Student Achievement on Standardized Tests:
Educational Technology provides tools that foster learning and enhance education. It has positively impacted student achievement.
Facts Used:
Schacter Article: Analyzes 5 major studies of education technology.
Kulik’s Meta-Analysis Study: 500 individual research studies of computer based instruction.
Students who used this instruction scored in the 64th percentile of achievement tests.
Students who did not use this instruction scored in the 50th percentile. (Graph)
Students learn more in less time with computer based instruction.
Positive attitude develops with use of computer based instruction.
Sivin-Kachala’s Review of the Research: 219 studies to asses the effect of technology throughout all ages.
Positive effects of achievement in all major subject areas with the presence of technology rich environments were noted.
Showed increase in achievement preschool through higher education.
Attitude improved towards education.
These are just a few of many studies that show the positive impact of technology on education. If you would like a list of additional resources please see me at the end.
This image was found on a technology director’s wiki page. It is from a conference she attended. Dan McCormick was the speaker that created and explained this graph.
"Technology integration is more than just using a few productivity applications, but rather a continuum of experiences for students...and, just like Bloom's, these experiences represent basic knowledge & skills to higher order thinking skills in terms of how we engage students." Dan McCormack

Students in technology rich environments are able to apply their content knowledge in a variety of ways to deepen their understanding. This graph does an excellent job of explaining this.
Cradler, McNabb, Freeman, & Burchett: How does technology influence student learning?
Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) assessed the effect of internet use on student performance. They not only produced better projects but received higher scores in presentation, presenting all aspects, and bringing in other points of view.
Bobkoff Katz, & Kratcoski: Teacher-student interactions in a ubiquitous computing environment; learning within dyads and triads of interactions.
When students were grouped in pairs with a computer, the computer was an active participant in the learning context. A “triad” developed between the student, teacher, and technology in the learning context. The technology worked with the content of the lesson, stimulated the child’s learning and thinking about the content while the teacher facilitated the smooth technology use.
When students are excited, engaged and supported, they become confident in their learning ability and will become self motivated learners. This is important in shaping the youth of today. Teachers play an important role in modeling classroom instructional strategies and using technology in effective ways to increase student achievement and empowering them to become self learners.
This graph shows the 9 proved instructional strategies used based on the Brabec, Fisher and Pitler article. Below those strategies are some technologies that are readily available and can be used to support instructional methods for a more productive and more efficient strategies.
Facts Used:
Brabec, Fisher & Pitler: Building Better Instruction: How technology supports nine research proven instructional strategies.
Using the instructional strategies, teachers model and shape the students to become self learners with the use of technology that is readily available.
Staff Development:
Staff Development is one of the most essential elements in ensuring that education technology is integrated into the classroom in an effective manner. In order to have successful staff development, staff, administrators and stakeholders need to be on board.
Harvey-Woodall: Integrating technology into the classroom: how does it impact student achievement?
Staff development can not be a one-shot thing, there needs to be continuous support from all areas, including technology specialists, administrators and stakeholders.
*Things that we are and will continue to have and develop are meaningful sessions that are an integral part of the district and school technology plan. We have technology staff available for on site support.
Cradler, McNabb, Freeman, & Burchett: How does technology influence student learning?
Leadership is pivotal in aligning available technology resources with school goals.
Our technology plan reflects the vision of our school, goals of the district and our community. Through staff development and technology implementation, we will see and increased level of students, teachers and education in our district.
Conclusion:
Educational technology has had a positive impact on education by raising students’ achievement in test scores, promoting higher-level thinking and creativity, as well as, creating effective self learners and staff development. With technology, teachers and schools can provide a high-quality education that will pave a bright future for students’ lives.
