Pronunciation
Pronunciation is an essential component not only
of learning a language but also of using that language.
For this reason, the learning of proper
pronunciation is a delicate area; students need to feel
free to make mistakes and practice their pronunciation
in order to increase their accuracy, but there are also
times when pronunciation must be quickly corrected
so that it does not impede the students' ability to
understand and be understood.
Why is pronunciation important to and for
learners?
 We know from Higgs Graph of Learner Needs that
pronunciation is something that is very important to
beginner learners as it allows them to feel more
comfortable when speaking; teachers must be aware,
however, that the more sounds differ between the
mother tongue and the second language, the higher
the affective filter. A student feeling too self-conscious
will not be as willing to take the risks that are
necessary when learning a new language.
In general, realistic goals surrounding pronunciation are:
 Consistency: the pronunciation should become
smooth and natural
 Intelligibility: the pronunciation should be
understandable to the listeners
 Communicative efficiency: the pronunciation should
help convey the meaning intended by the speaker
Good pronunciation comes from a lot of technical
knowledge on the part of the teacher about placement of
the mouth, etc. Most teachers in North America,
unfortunately, don’t have this knowledge and therefore
tend to pass it off as being unimportant but in fact, as you
progress in your fluency, pronunciation becomes more and
more important. Language learning needs a lot of practice
and both mechanical and meaningful practice lead to
improved pronunciation. Only through practice will a skill
become automatic and drill-like activities are not always
considered interesting. Nevertheless perception practice is
a good way to help learners distinguish between certain
sounds.
Speaking
Speaking" is the delivery of language through the
mouth. To speak, we create sounds using many
parts of our body, including the lungs, vocal tract,
vocal chords, tongue, teeth and lips.
Speaking is the second of the four language skills, which
are:
 Listening
 Speaking
 Reading
 Writing
Vocabulary
A person's vocabulary is the set of words within
a language that are familiar to that person. A
vocabulary usually develops with age, and serves as a
useful and fundamental tool for communication and
acquiring knowledge. Acquiring an extensive
vocabulary is one of the largest challenges in learning a
second language.
Types of vocabulary :
 Reading vocabulary
 Listening vocabulary
 Speaking vocabulary
 Writing vocabulary
How to Learn Listening Skills
 Developing listening skills can help you build rapport
with others. Having proper listening skills is an
important part of understanding and processing
information. Building relationships, working with
others and retaining information are all contingent
upon being an active listener. Although some people
naturally possess good listening skills while others do
not, it is possible for most to improve their listening
skills.
Instructions :
Focus all of your attention on the speaker.
Keep your eyes focused on the speaker if listening to a
speech and maintain eye contact when conversing
one-on-one.
Keep an open mind while processing the speaker's
information.
Actively listen to the speaker by using body language
cues.
Do not interrupt the speaker even if you don't agree
with what he is saying.

What is Reading
All reading is reading no matter the format. Don’t be
textist about format, or length of work, or context of
reading.
To read is to learn and grow, to experience, to empathise,
to understand, to marvel, to wonder, to laugh and to
cry. To live other lives in other places and times, to
deepen a connection with place. Reading is immensely
important to me. It shapes my personality and identity
as do all experiences.
Writing
Writing is language in a textual medium through
the use of a set of signs or symbols (known as a writing
system.1] It is distinguished from illustration, such as
cave drawing and painting ,and non-symbolic
preservation of language via non-textual media, such
as magnetic tape audio .
