Operators are faced with the task of choosing between a diverse set of commercial and noncommercial options for deploying NFV. This diversity includes multiple NFVi controllers, hypervisors, network controllers and storage virtualization technologies. This diversity is needed to meet the requirements of various VNF vendors and to meet operators’ stringent performance and support requirements. OPNFV is currently focused on open source solutions in a world of proprietary distributions, including VMware, Red Hat, Canonical and Mirantis. This talk will help OPNFV developers understand how to successfully navigate a world of hybrid solutions that contain a mixture of open source and commercial products.

We'll share several case studies on how Oracle's customers are rewriting the rules on telecom app development, with a special focus on Telecom Italia.

In recent years as virtualization and cloud became more and more mature an opportunity has been created for the industry to move towards an NFV networking methodology. In parallel with this phenomenon the role of open source has evolved to establish a fundamentally new paradigm for software development. The ICT industry has had to adapt to this change and move away from traditional ways of working. During this presentation we will share some of our experience of the cloud market including SDN and NFV. We intend to shed light on some of the challenges faced and what lessons learnt on the path toward collaborative standardization and open source development. We will also highlight the importance of OPNFV and its role as an avenue to upstream communities for both investigation and cooperation

Dangerous Demo: The TADCloud MNO Teaser James Body Head of R&D Truphone At TAD Summit 2013, it became apparent that most application developers were challenged to demonstrate their solutions without a Mobile Network upon which to host them. Consequently, a Group of TAD Members decided to work together to build a 'Cloud Based Mobile Network' to show off the capability of their systems and to provide a network platform into which other Application Platforms could interface their components. The first iteration of this, showing a basic mobile core network was demonstrated at TAD Summit 2014 in Istanbul. This consisted of Truphone Network services working through OpenCloud Hosted Open Source IMS (Project Clearwater from Metaswitch) together with Restcomm Application Services (from Telestax). This session will introduce the component parts of the 2015 TADSummit Demo (TADCloud MNO) and will outline their functionality as a preview to a fuller demonstration during the breakout sessions on Wednesday.

With businesses built around software now disrupting multiple industries that appeared to have stable leaders, the need has emerged for enterprises to create "software factories" built around the following principles: Streaming customer feedback directly into rapid, iterative cycles of application development Horizontally scaling applications to meet user demand Compatibility with an enormous diversity of clients, with mobility (smartphones, tablets, etc.) taking the lead Continuous delivery of value, shrinking the cycle time from concept to cash Infrastructure has taken the lead in adapting to meet these needs with the move to the cloud, and Platform as a Service (PaaS) has raised the level of abstraction to a focus on an ecosystem of applications and services. However, most applications are still developed as if we're living in the previous generation of both business and infrastructure: the monolithic application. Microservices - small, loosely coupled applications that follow the Unix philosophy of "doing one thing well" - represent the application development side of enabling rapid, iterative development, horizontal scale, polyglot clients, and continuous delivery. They also enable us to scale application development and eliminate long term commitments to a single technology stack. While microservices are simple, they are certainly not easy. It's recently been said that "microservices are not a free lunch". Interestingly enough, if you look at the concerns expressed here about microservices, you'll find that they are exactly the challenges that a PaaS is intended to address. So while microservices do not necessarily imply cloud (and vice versa), there is in fact a symbiotic relationship between the two, with each approach somehow compensating for the limitations of the other, much like the practices of eXtreme Programming.
