All landfills need to be degassed. Al Qusais landfill has developed from a dump site to a well managed landfill that is being becoming a source of pride rather than worry for Dubai and a showcase for the region. Working together towards a cleaner future. It is our responsibility to leave the Earth a better place for our children.
2. Landfill Gas Projects – The Mission
Mission of GESS with the implementation of LFG projects in the region
Supporting the Dubai integrated energy strategy of 2030 set out by the Supreme Council
of Energy and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum which aims to
diversify energy sources and to preserve the environment.
Al Qusais Project – Dubai UAE large scale registered CDM Generating Power
Diversified is fuel mix
Added a new energy source
Reduced the need and use of diesel for daily operations
Reduction of Green House gases of Over 400,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
The Al Qusais CDM project alone is equivalent
to reducing the environmental impact of taking
over 80,000 cars off the roads.
3. What is a TYPICAL LANDFILL - Al Qusais
Landfills are living organisms. It
is the decomposition of the
organic portion of the waste
that produces landfill gas.

An untreated landfill has an adverse impact on the
environment, it is a hazard that is a primary cause of CH4
emissions globally and is a contributor to Global Warming.
4. MSW 35% Organic- Waste Generates LFG

Landfill Gas (LFG) is typically composed of;
Methane CH4 50 – 60 % vol.
Carbon Dioxide CO2 35 – 45 % vol.
Nitrogen N2 0 – 20 % vol.
Oxygen O2 0 – 5% vol.
The 4 phases of LFG – Phase IV Methane production
5. Gas Collection Design and Engineering
The Detailed engineering and the design of the gas collection
network that has over 25 km of pipes underground have
enabled us to optimize the potential.
Al Qusais is an award winning site that has surpassed all
expectations.
Phase 2 will be to extend the gas network and the
development of 20 Mw power from landfill gas and the
fulfillment of many years of hard work.
6. Dubai Municipality marks ‘green’ milestone with Al
Qusais Landfill now fully powered using landfill gas
• First time that landfill gas is converted to generate 1MW electricity in
the region; in line with Dubai Municipality’s vision to generate 20 MW of
power from landfill gas by 2020
• Fully registered with UN, the large-scale CDM project underlines Dubai’s
focus on sustainable development
• Initiative will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions equivalent to over
400,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
• Project development, design and construction by Green Energy Solutions
& Sustainability LLC with GE’s Jenbacher gas engine deployed on site to
generate power
What was a dump site, is now a well managed
environmental landfill that is a source of power and
pride.
7. Current Situation in the Region and why
we should do something!!
Landfilling is still an option here – Al Qusais receives over 6000 tons of waste per day.
In Europe and North America the existing landfills are a source of power as it should
be here as well. The European trends are moving away from landfilling.
The top methane sources are the decomposition of wastes in landfills. A new
emphasis on methane would require us to get smarter about capturing methane at
landfills, www.earthisland.org Earth Island Journal
Statistics show that Methane from landfills is harmful (IPCC – intergovernmental panel on climate change)
CDM and Kyoto Protocol fix the GWP – Global Warming Potential of Green House Gases
– CH4 Methane (landfill gas) has a GWP of 25
We are able to reduce the impact that landfill gas has on the environment and generate
power, there are no excuses left.
8. Climate Change – The commitment from
the UAE
Climate Change – This phrase has been in the news on a daily basis. It is a doomsday message
that is being relayed by everyone from Political leaders to Religious Leaders.
During the last Conference of Parties (COP) 19 meeting on climate change, the UAE committed to
addressing climate change from an economic, social and environmental point of view
Includes implementing commercial clean energy projects,
making investments into clean technologies
expanding development assistance my making clean energy accessible to all.
The UAE is meeting that challenge and the Al Qusais landfill gas to power project is a key
milestone as well as Solar Parks, Smart Cities applications and recycling initiatives from the
Dubai Municipality Waste Department.
9. Power Generation Potential: Landfill Gas
As per the Technical specification of GE Jenbacher:
• 1 MW supply running at Al Qusais Site,
• Equipment code JGC 320 GS-B.L ,
• specific gas consumption is 590 Nm3 per 1058 KW generation.
• = 551.4 Nm3/MW of power generation.*
*This is how much gas you will need to produce 1 Mw of power (electricity)
Al Qusais is currently flaring 5,800 Nm3 per hour of Landfill gas. With this amount of
gas the power potential is 10 – 12 Mwh with the current gas collection system.
10. Economics: Landfill Gas Power Generation
• Power generation ( Installed capacity ) = 12 MW
• Annual operating hours @ 330 days = 7920 ~ 8000 hrs
• PLF (Plant Load Factor) = 90%
• Auxiliary consumption : 5%
• Net generation : 12*8000*90%*(100-5)%
82080 Mwh
This is equivalent to setting up a 60 MW solar power project at a fraction of the cost
The lowest hanging fruit on the renewable markets
Landfill gas is a power source that can provide sustainable renewable energy. It
is an important renewable energy source.
11. Comparison of Solar Power to Landfill

12. So then why are there not any other
Landfill Gas Projects in this region??
Main reasons:
Legislation
No feed in tariff
Waste management strategies
All of this has changed over the past two years and the time has come to recognize that
renewable energy and alternatives to fossil fuels is necessary and a global
responsibility.
13. Zero Wastefulness – Recycling Initiatives and Waste
management strategies to support sustainable
growth.
Regionally there are initiatives to recycle, but recycling is in the early stages of
development, which means that there is an opportunity to maximize the existing
landfills and capture the energy that is stored in the high organic waste stream that
is harming our environment.

Harnessing Waste energy – Welcome
I would like to talk today about Landfill Gas and the potential energy that is found in our landfills
What is the mission of Green Energy Solutions , we are targeting landfills in the region to develop them to generate clean renewable energy.
The integrated energy strategy of 2030 set out by the Supreme Council of Energy and His Highness Sheih Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum aims to diversify energy sources and to preserve the environment.
Landfill gas projects are key to this strategy
What is a typical landfill, I will talk about Al Qusais the largest landfill in Dubai. It is 3.5 sq Km and 45 Meters high.
Landfills are alive, it is the decomposition of the organic portion that generates landfill gas.
An untreated landfill has a negative impact on the surrounding area damaging the vegetation causing fires and contributing to Global Warming
In Municipal Waste landfills the organic portion is around 35%. Landfill gas is composed mostly of Methane between 50 to 60% and a landfill like Qusais that is in Phase 4 methane production will be able to supply power for many years. By keeping the landfill active we have increased the power potential. We do not want to create more landfills we want to maximize the existing landfills to generate power.
Al Qusais started construction in January 2012 and was generating power in January 2013. 25 km of pipes underground. Collection stations around the perameter of the landfill where the gas is monitored on a weekly basis and tested by the engineer on site.
Qusais was officially inaugurated on July 29, 2013 by His Excellency Hussain Lootah Director General of Dubai Municipaltiy and Dr. Rachid Ahmad Bin Fahad Minister of Environment and Water, when they pressed the button and Dubai became the First Landfill to Generate power from landfill gas in the region
Even though we are moving towards reducing the amount of waste that is going to a landfill it is still a reality in this region. There are some good innitiatives that are being implemented but education and public support with legislation is what is needed to make these innitiatives successful. This means that for now we have to be smarter about capturing methane at landfills and utilize that power.
CH4 from landfill gas has a Global Warming potential of 25 times more than CO2. We have a Global Responsibility to reduce the impact of landfills.
The UAE has committed to addressing climate change from an economic, social and environmental point of view.
This includes all renewable energy and clean energy projects like Qusais there is a recycling facility that is in development that will further reduce the waste that is going to landfill. All of these initiatives come together to help create an important part of the smart city concept that is so important.
What is the power potential of Landfill Gas
Currently Qusais is flaring 5,800 Nm3 of landfill gas only a small portion of that is going to the LFG engine to power the site. The potential of Quasis currently is 12 Mw electricity, and will be expanded to 20Mw by 2020. This is the vision of Dubai and should be a goal for all of the Emirates.
landfill gas power generation makes Economic sense, it is the lowest hanging fruit on the renewable market . A 12 Mw landfill gas project is equivilnt to setting up a 60 Mw solar park. At a fraction of the cost.
As a brief comparison let us compare a 20 Mw solar to 20Mw Landfill gas power
The first line says it all a 20 Mw landfill gas project is 4 times more powerful than a 20Mw solar project.
Landfill gas provides power 24/7/365 where solar starts off at only 50%
So why you may ask are there not many other landfill gas projects. It was just because landfilling is easy, the timing was not right.
As Global Citizens we are realizing that we have to give back to the Earth. We have to take care of it for our children. There are very aggressive renewable energy targets in the region and landfill gas projects can help to meet some of these targets.
Times are changing. What was one a dump site is now a well managed landfill that is filling and covering the waste with proper waste management. There is a strategy that is in place and targets are being reached. The amount of waste generated annually in the UAE is huge and if everyone of us chip in and do our part we can make a difference. The amount of plastics we throw away, even the bags we get from the grocery stores. If we think about it and do the small everyday things it will make a big difference. Support the green innitiatives and lets all work together.
Al Qusais landfill and GESS have worked hard and reached many milestones in the region. The largest CDM that is registered in the region for landfill gas. Achieved higher than the targeted Credits. Providing sustainable power and demonstrating that landfill gas can produce sustainable power. The landfill has remained active. The surrounding area is more environmental and there is a significant reduction of mal odors and no more fires on the landfill.
We are proud to be working with Dubai Muniipality and support their vision of an excellent city with sustainable living for all of its citizens. We all belong to the same Global Family and One landfill at a time GESS will continue to do its best to Light the future with landfill gas.
Thank you for your time and patience.
