2. Power BI Components
Microsoft Power BI technology consists of a group of components such as:
- Power Query (for data mash-up and transformation)
- Power Pivot (for in-memory tabular data modelling)
- Power View (for viewing data visualizations)
- Power Map (for visualizing 3D geo-spatial data)
- Power BI Desktop (a companion development tool)
- Power Q&A (for natural language Q&A)
3. Power Query (for data mash-up and transformation)
Power Query is an (Extract, Transform, Load) Engine in power BI
Power Query is a feature of Microsoft Excel and Power BI programs. Power Query is used to,
Set up connections to various data sources
Pre-process data – ex: cleanup, adding columns, filtering, sorting, mashing up
Publish the finalized data to source system – Excel or Power BI

6. Power Pivot (for in-memory tabular data modelling)
Power Pivot is a data modeling and calculation engine. It used Data Analysis Expression called
(DAX).
Power Pivot is an in-memory data modeling component that provides highly compressed data
storage and extremely fast aggregation and calculation
Once Power Query has imported and cleaned the various data sources, Power Pivot is used to
establish relationships between the tables/queries.
By using Power Pivot we can create new columns create relationships etc.
7. Combine Power Query and Power Pivot
Power Query is the recommended tool for locating, connecting to and importing data. Power
Pivot: Powerful data analysis and data modeling tools in Excel are very convenient for modeling
the data you imported.
8. Power View (for viewing data visualizations)
Power view is the data visualization component. This can connect to data sources and can filter
data for each visualization element or for entire report
Power view enables you to create nice report, containing images, maps etc.
Power Map (for visualizing 3D geo-spatial data)
Power Map is used to visualize geospatial data in 3D mode. Power BI work with Bing maps to get best
visualization based on latitude and longitude or country, state, city and street address information.
9. Power BI Desktop and Power Q& A
Power BI Desktop:
Power BI Desktop is a development tool for Power Query, Power Pivot and power view.
Power Q& A
Power Q&A is a Natural Language (NLP) engine for questions and answers to your model. Once you’re built your
data model and deployed that into power BI website, then you can ask questions and get answers easily.
