2. Introduction of Joseph Wresinski
● Born to immigrant parents in a poor neighbourhood of Angers, France
on February 12 1917 .
● Grew up in a family which suffered deep poverty and social exclusion.
● In 1946, he was ordained as priest and served in industrial and rural
parishes where, right from the beginning, he related to the most
deprived families.
● Appointment to France’s Economic and Social Council in 1979.
● He died at the age of 71 on February 14 1988.

3. His History & Impacts
● In 1956, he was assigned to be chaplain to 250 families placed in an
emergency housing camp near Paris.
● In 1957, he and others founded the first association later known as
the ATD Fourth World Movement.
● Devoted their lives to gaining recognition for the dignity of people in
poverty.
● Its development was inspired by Joseph’s own experience as a child in
a poverty-stricken family, his daily interactions with families living in
poverty, and the support of members of its Volunteer Corps.
4. HOW IT CAME ABOUT…
When Joseph Wresinski was placed in the emergency housing camp, He
said about his years there: "The families in that camp have
inspired everything I have undertaken for their liberation.
They took hold of me, they lived within me, they carried me
forward, they pushed me to found the Movement with
them."
5. ATD Fourth World
● ATD (All Together in Dignity) Fourth World is a movement of
solidarity among and in collaboration with the most excluded families
around the world. Founded in 1957 by Joseph Wresinski, ATD Fourth
World brings together women and men from all cultures and social
classes and is active in 34 countries.
● It is an international non-governmental organization with no religious
or political affiliation.
6. Other Impacts…
- International Day for Eradication of Poverty
- On October 17,1987, Father Joseph Wresinski unveiled a
commemorative stone at the Human Rights Plaza in Paris.
- Since then, the commemorative stone has become a rallying point for
people from all walks of life.
- The United Nations declared October 17 the “International Day for the
Eradication of Poverty” in 1992. In many countries, people gather on
the 17th of each month to honor people who suffer from extreme
poverty and renew their commitment to them.
