Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

10. What is PosturAbility?
• PosturAbility is all about the connection between posture and confidence and
self-esteem. The cornerstone of this informative motivational workshop is
postural awareness—learning to become aware of how you sit, walk, lift, carry
and do other functional activities. Your posture sends signals about you to
others—vital to understand if you are going to interviews, making
presentations and socializing. Better posture means better impressions. It also
means less chance of injury during daily activities or sports participation.
• PosturAbility includes Marilynn Larkin’s signature Posture-cize program—a
workout to motivating music that is suitable for all ages, sizes and fitness
levels. The emphasis is on boosting confidence, strengthening muscles of the
back and core, and creating postural awareness. The Posture-cize workout
starts with a fun, upbeat warm up, moves on to strength and conditioning
with resistance bands, body weight or free weights, features a special “strut
your stuff” section and wraps up with a stretch and relaxation section that
leaves participants feeling refreshed, revitalized, and full of energy! Posture-
cize is done standing (can be adapted to sitting) in regular clothing; no need
to change into gym clothes.
• Change your posture, and you can change your life!
11. Key Learnings
• Your posture influences how you feel about yourself and how others
perceive you (this affects your social life, interview situations for
college, work, etc);
• Good posture is specific to you (it's not about some arbitrary directive to
"stand up straight" or "thrust your shoulders back")--and you need to be
aware of what it feels like when you stand and move with good posture (I
talk participants through weight over both feet, neutral pelvis, lifted and
open chest, etc, so each one can feel what good posture feels like for
him/her);
• Attaining good posture in the moment is good--but you also have to be
able to maintain it (here's where the Posture-cize workout comes in, as
well as postural awareness)
• Exercise and moving with good posture can be fun! People invariably
respond positively to the music, visualization, and "red carpet" posture
walk sections of the workout. My "hidden" agenda in developing
PosturAbility is to make exercise fun and accessible to everyone--to help
combat a sedentary lifestyle and the idea that exercise is a chore, and to
boost social interaction and confidence.
