If we look at the United States as having many different cultures, the reason we need to develop intercultural competence is to be civil to those around us. For this discussion, consider how regional dialects, speech patterns, and idioms can separate people by making communication between groups more difficult or challenging. For example, people who live in the South can usually easily determine where in Texas someone is from, whereas someone from the Midwest would only "hear" Southern. Similarly, someone from the city of Boston is actually segregated by language; those who have lived in Boston for generations speak considerably differently than do those who arrived more recently. These situations can lead to stereotyping. Although there is no "right or wrong" regarding these practices, such differences can hamper understanding. Whether aware of it or not, each of us views the world based on the language stereotypes we have grown up with or been exposed to. Language is an essential and ubiquitous component of our lives. To see that this statement is true for yourself, take a moment to think about your day. Cast your mind back to when you first awoke. What were your thoughts and how were they expressed?

Perhaps a newspaper, pages on the Internet, email, advertisements, labels, signs, home- work assignments? Now move on to thought itself. What thoughts and ideas have passed through your mind? Have you made explicit plans, imagined conversations, debated with yourself? If you are like most people, this brief exer- cise has revealed that language is both within and around you, a constant part of your internal and external existence. Language is the primary medium which you use to interact with people and institutions in our society. Your particular use of language is also a reflection of who you are as an individual; all of us use language as a means to build and portray our identities in the world around us. We also use language to shape and interpret the great and small experi- ences of our lives.
Think about the broader world in which we live. Language is the principal means by which societies are constructed and cultures are developed. Think of the size of our soci- ety’s great libraries, and how the majority of the volumes in those vast collections (14.6 million volumes in the Harvard University Library alone) are language in its written form. The intellectual achievements of humankind are essentially embodied in language. Not only is this true of the written works that formally encapsulate our knowledge, but it is also true of the huge body of indigenous knowledge held by the speakers of thousands of languages across the globe, from the Brazilian Amazon to the Mongolian steppes. Some may argue that music and art are non-linguistic, but note that they often incorporate lan- guage, as with lyrics. Even works that do not contain language are interpreted and under- stood through verbal thought, discussion, and critical analysis. Similarly, mathematics could be argued to be non-linguistic, but again language is used to teach, understand, and interpret it.
Beyond the modern world, consider that language has been used by humans for at least 30,000 years, by thousands of groups across the globe, wherever humans have ven- tured. Speakers of each generation endow their language with their own unique mark, their own contribution, changing it in myriad subtle ways. As language passes from

Also, consider these questions – Is communication possible without culture? Is culture possible without communication? If you answer no to both questions, this might help you to start thinking through why it is important to think about culture when addressing communication.

We know that culture and communication are fundamentally linked. Now, to get to the precision of the relationship, you are asked here to explain HOW culture shapes verbal and nonverbal communication. Think about your own life. Have your parents ever told you to sit still while in church or to close your mouth while you eat? How are these nonverbal cues that are being shaped through culture and verbal messages? The best replies will both explain “how” culture shapes verbal and nonverbal communication but also explain examples about how this transfers to specific patterns of communication (e.g., driving on the right side of the road).
3) Describe the relationship between culture and two other themes that are central to culture from this list, utilizing Bevan:

To get to the patterns of communication that result from cultural training, you will write a paper about culture this week, where you focus on culture and nonverbal communication and then choose two themes from this list of options:

· Gender
The paper is worth 7.5 points, which is 7.5% of your overall grade.
Before you begin writing the paper, be sure to:
1) Watch the two videos, one on culture and one on cultural filters.
2) Read chapter 3 in Bevan and Sole and identify two points about culture and communication that you will cover in your paper. You will need to both LIST and EXPLAIN the two themes you chose.
3) Watch at least one of the videos in the “resources” box, under “Week 2 Paper Video Help.”
While reading and watching the videos:
1) Take notes. When you identify the themes that you will cover, remember that you are required to cover nonverbal communication and then two of the following themes – language, race and ethnicity, social class, and gender.
2) Bevan and Sole cover language and gender pretty well. However, if you want to address race and ethnicity or social class, you will be required to spend more time with one of the videos in the “resources” box. If you discuss social class and race and ethnicity, you will need to watch and cite two videos.
3) Make connections between what you read in Bevan and Sole and themes covered in the videos. You might want to make links to the basic principles of effective communication from week 1. You will need to “engage” with the reading and video. Different culture facilitates intercultural communication. These differences are identified in terms of language, type of food consumed, cultural practices, and dressing styles. There is several ways of cross cultural misunderstandings. Language is one. For example, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami was originally written in Japanese, but it's been translated in many languages. One being English, which is the language I read it as. I'm sure I missed and misunderstood so many things like idioms, slang, and meanings because not every word can be translated perfectly to another language. Also, some words could mean different things depending on the context and even tone of voice you're using. Body language is another thing entirely. More examples of cross cultural misunderstandings. Japanese culture is very different from American culture so I think about how I only half understood the book and that my interpretation of it is skewed by the fact that I did not understand everything because it was translated from Japanese to English.
I believe that some interpretations are more correct than others. We shouldn't scold someone for not agreeing with the popular narrative though. For example, Hamlet. Isn't the anthropologist pushing her cultural baggage onto to the Tiv elders? Since she wants them to view Hamlet the same way she does. Of course, she can disagree, but she shouldn't push her own beliefs onto them when they have different beliefs and values.
A line that really had me thinking was, "We believe you when you say your marriage customs are different, or your clothes and weapons. But people are the same everywhere..." (McCurdy, 2016). I believe they are right. Human emotions and human decisions are the same everywhere, no matter which culture it is taking place in.

Cross cultural misunderstandings can be confusing and challenging to those who are not aware of the difference in cultures around the world. Some cross-cultural misunderstanding that are common are hand gestures, certain words, wearing shoes, embracing, and the direction your feet point. There is several ways of cross cultural misunderstandings. Language is one. For example, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami was originally written in Japanese, but it's been translated in many languages. One being English, which is the language I read it as. I'm sure I missed and misunderstood so many things like idioms, slang, and meanings because not every word can be translated perfectly to another language. Also, some words could mean different things depending on the context and even tone of voice you're using. Body language is another thing entirely. More examples of cross cultural misunderstandings. Japanese culture is very different from American culture so I think about how I only half understood the book and that my interpretation of it is skewed by the fact that I did not understand everything because it was translated from Japanese to English.
I believe that some interpretations are more correct than others. We shouldn't scold someone for not agreeing with the popular narrative though. For example, Hamlet. Isn't the anthropologist pushing her cultural baggage onto to the Tiv elders? Since she wants them to view Hamlet the same way she does. Of course, she can disagree, but she shouldn't push her own beliefs onto them when they have different beliefs and values.
A line that really had me thinking was, "We believe you when you say your marriage customs are different, or your clothes and weapons. But people are the same everywhere..." (McCurdy, 2016). I believe they are right. Human emotions and human decisions are the same everywhere, no matter which culture it is taking place in.

Cross cultural misunderstandings can be confusing and challenging to those who are not aware of the difference in cultures around the world. Some cross-cultural misunderstanding that are common are hand gestures, certain words, wearing shoes, embracing, and the direction your feet point. Examine how a particular myth influenced/inspired something specific in culture or the arts, including but not limited to a work of art, a poem, a religious ritual, a film, a statue, a carving, a religious symbol, a novel, a video game, or a specific TV episode. Compare the original myth with its presentation in the chosen medium.
b) Mini-Lesson/Lecture II: Myths and Values
Choose a specific myth and identify the specific values expressed through it. Explain how the myth functions to uphold, enforce, or reinforce a set of values within its culture/society/religion, to the detriment or benefit of that culture/society/religion.
c) Mini-Lesson/Lecture III: The Impact of Myth
Briefly describe a historical event, a controversy, a world event, a current event, a military group or action, a political event or group, a religious group or action, or a similar phenomenon. Then, show how a specific myth relates to that event, group, or action, as well as examining the impact that the values, attitudes, and ideas imparted by that myth have on the people, ideologies, and points of view in play.

Reading from a script may initially sound "forced," but you will gradually learn how to write scripts using a more "natural" voice. • The video assigned in this unit's Studies, Verbal Messages and Intercultural Communications , shows how verbal messages can be misconstrued, causing obstacles to intercultural communication. Do you believe that differences in language create the single biggest obstacle in intercultural communication? Why? Have you ever been in a situation where language has created a communication barrier? Explain. • Verbal messages are not the only type of communication that can be misunderstood. Nonverbal messages are also misread. To test this statement, include a nonverbal message with your post or Adobe Connect video. If you use Adobe Connect to create your message, attach a transcript that includes a description of nonverbal cues. Consider that the United States is comprised of multilingual groups, and language ties people to a culture. If we look at the United States as having many different cultures, the reason we need to develop intercultural competence is to be civil to those around us. For this discussion, consider how regional dialects, speech patterns, and idioms can separate people by making communication between groups more difficult or challenging. For example, people who live in the South can usually easily
- 2. determine where in Texas someone is from, whereas someone from the Midwest would only "hear" Southern. Similarly, someone from the city of Boston is actually segregated by language; those who have lived in Boston for generations speak considerably differently than do those who arrived more recently. These situations can lead to stereotyping. Although there is no "right or wrong" regarding these practices, such differences can hamper understanding. Whether aware of it or not, each of us views the world based on the language stereotypes we have grown up with or been exposed to. How has this affected your perception of others based on their language use? (For example, what would come to mind when meeting or hearing someone from Louisiana's bayou country? Or New York, New Jersey, Canada, or northern Minnesota? Would meeting someone from Great Britain lead you to assume that the person is haughty?) Write about your own experiences or those of someone you know. How has language created stereotypes or internal biases in your own life? Post by Thursday.
