PORTABLE ELECTRIC SAW
SETTING UP
Check the machine is in a safe working order and report any defect to staff:
• Check the saw has a current Certificate of Fitness
• Locate on / off switch
• Check the saw case condition for damage
• Check the condition of the cord and plug for any damage
• Always disconnect saw from power supply when changing blade, undertaking any maintenance or
adjustments
• Visually check the blade is sharp
• Check the blade is suitable for the operation required eg; different abrasive discs are required for
cutting steel or masonry
• Check blade guard is returning freely
• Adjust base plate to cutting depth required
• Check base plate is secure and not twisted
• Locate safety equipment
Earmuffs – compulsory
Solid Footwear – compulsory
Safety Glasses – when using abrasive disks
• Do not work in loose clothing and secure long hair close to head
• If working in damp or outdoor conditions electrical protection must be used at the source of power
• Maintain clear and tidy work space at all times
OPERATION
• Check material for defects before and during operation and eliminate defects
• Ensure safety equipment is worn
• Ensure switch is in off position
• Check for the proper clearance beneath the workpiece before cutting so that the blade will not strike the
floor work bench etc
• Plug cord into power supply
• Keep cords clear of cutting area at all times
• Check that the material being cut is securely support to avoid kickback
• Ensure you have a good grip and control of the saw
• Maintain a balanced stance and do not overreach
• Turn machine on
• Total concentration is required when operating the tool
• Allow saw to reach full operating speed before and after cutting
• If the machine is damaged during operation, isolate and report immediately to a staff member
• Clean and return saw to storage when the work is complete or at the end of the days work
• Leave the machine and area where working clean and tidy

Angle /Compound Cuts
• To avoid the guard jamming in the saw cut, hold guard in the open position to allow the
saw to cut freely
• Extra care is required to keep body, clothing and cord clear of the blade as it is exposed
• Ensure off cuts are allowed to fall freely
• Do not stand behind saw when cutting
