The President of
Ukraine Petro
Poroshenko has
decided to establish
Remembrance and
Reconciliation Day
on 8 May
Remembrance
Day (also known
as Poppy Day)
marks the day
World War One
ended, at 11am
on the 11th day
of the 11th
month, back in
1918.
A two minute silence
is held at 11am to
remember the people
who died in wars.
There is also
Remembrance
Sunday every year,
which falls on the
second Sunday in
November.
There are usually ceremonies at war
memorials and churches throughout the
country.
The red remembrance
poppy has become a
familiar emblem of
Remembrance Day
due to the poem "In
Flanders Fields".
These poppies
bloomed across
some of the worst
battlefields.
Now it is traditional to
wear an artificial
poppy. They are sold
by the Royal British
Legion, a charity
dedicated to helping
war veterans.
In 2014 artist Paul
Cummins and Tom Piper
along with Historic Royal
Palaces has a vision to
fill the moat of the Tower
of London with 888,246
ceramic poppies one
poppy for each British
and colonial fatality
during the First World
War.
21,688 people volunteered to install the
poppies
5 million people travelled from around the
world to see them.
