The Popol Vuh creation myth of the Mayans describes how the gods Tepeu and Gucumatz created the world and its inhabitants. They first created animals but were disappointed that they could not praise the gods. The first humans were made of clay but crumbled. The second were made of wood but lacked minds. The gods then used corn to create sturdier humans who could praise them. However, the gods weakened these humans' vision so they would not see too much. The first humans went on to become the ancestors of all Quiche people.
