The document discusses deformation of metals. There are two types of deformation - elastic and plastic. Elastic deformation is reversible and occurs at low stresses, while plastic deformation is permanent and occurs at higher stresses after the yield point. Plastic deformation occurs through slip and twinning. Slip involves shear displacement of crystal planes, while twinning results in a mirrored portion of the crystal. Single crystal metals have strengths approaching theoretical values, while polycrystalline metals are weaker due to dislocations and grain boundaries, but can deform plastically through dislocation movement.
Properties of Fluids, Fluid Static, Buoyancy and Dimensional AnalysisSatish Taji
The presentation includes a brief view of the basic properties of a fluid, fluid statics, Pascal's law, hydrostatic law, fluid classification, pressure measurement devices (manometers and mechanical gauges), hydrostatic forces on different surfaces, buoyancy and metacentric height, and dimensional analysis.
1. Light can be reflected, refracted, and bent when passing from one medium to another. Reflection and refraction follow specific laws.
2. Spherical mirrors and lenses can form real or virtual images depending on the position of the object relative to the focal point. Mirror and lens formulas relate the focal length to the object and image distances.
3. Sign conventions define distances and angles as positive or negative for spherical mirrors and lenses, allowing mirror and lens equations to be used to calculate image locations from object positions.
The document discusses directions and planes in a cubic unit cell. It provides three key points:
1) Directions and planes are used to identify the orientation of atoms, which influences properties like slip, failure modes, conductivity, and more.
2) Miller indices provide a simple notation for representing planes and directions using intercepts with the x, y, and z axes of the unit cell.
3) Specific procedures are outlined for determining the Miller indices that represent a plane or direction using points of intersection with the unit cell axes.
B.Tech sem I Engineering Physics U-III Chapter 1-THE SPECIAL THEORY OF RELATI...Abhi Hirpara
The document discusses Einstein's theory of special relativity. It provides background on Einstein's two postulates: 1) the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames of reference, and 2) the speed of light in a vacuum is the same for all observers regardless of their motion. It describes how these postulates led Einstein to develop the Lorentz transformations, which show that time and space are relative between different frames of reference moving at a constant velocity with respect to each other.
The document summarizes key concepts from Chapter 7 of the textbook "Introduction to Materials Science" related to strengthening mechanisms in materials. It discusses how plastic deformation occurs through the motion of dislocations in materials and different ways to strengthen materials by impeding dislocation motion, such as reducing grain size, alloying, and increasing dislocation density through strain hardening. It also covers recovery, recrystallization and grain growth processes in materials after plastic deformation.
The document discusses diffusion in materials, including:
1) Diffusion occurs via atomic mechanisms like vacancy and interstitial diffusion, moving atoms from high to low concentration areas.
2) Examples of diffusion applications are case hardening of gears and doping of semiconductors.
3) Fick's first law describes steady-state diffusion as flux proportional to the concentration gradient, via the diffusion coefficient D.

This document discusses boundary layer theory, which defines a thin layer of fluid near a solid boundary where viscosity is dominant. Ludwig Prandtl first proposed this theory in 1904 to model fluid flow. The boundary layer has different regions and is classified as laminar or turbulent. Key terms like displacement thickness, momentum thickness, and energy thickness are also defined. Boundary layer separation can occur in adverse pressure gradients and examples are given. Methods to prevent separation are outlined. The theory has applications in aerodynamics, heat transfer, and other fluid flow problems.

Failure Basics (strength of materials) - with animations if downloadeddbanua
The document discusses various mechanical properties of metals including strength, stiffness, elasticity, plasticity, ductility, and hardness. It also covers common failure mechanisms such as brittle and ductile fracture, impact, fatigue, creep, and corrosion. Failure analysis is described as determining the root cause of failures through data collection and analysis. Different testing methods are mentioned including tensile testing, impact testing, and fatigue testing.
Creep is the time-dependent deformation of a material under stresses below its yield strength and at elevated temperatures. It occurs as the applied load causes the gradual distortion of the material's internal structure over time. Creep is an important consideration for components that operate at high temperatures, such as those found in oil refineries and steam turbines, as excessive creep deformation can lead to failure if adjacent parts come into contact. The temperature at which different metals will experience creep depends on their melting points, with creep typically occurring above 0.5 times the absolute melting temperature of the metal. The creep rate of a material is characterized by an initial rapid decrease in strain rate, followed by a steady minimum rate, and then an acceleration until failure.

Plastic deformation and strengthning mechanismRahul Sen
Plastic deformation occurs through crystal distortion localized to slip planes and directions, most commonly through translational glide of dislocations. The presence of defects like dislocations explains why real crystals deform plastically at stresses much lower than theoretical predictions. Dislocations can glide, climb, and multiply, allowing plastic flow. Strengthening mechanisms like solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and work hardening increase the resistance of dislocation motion through interactions with solute atoms, particles, and other dislocations. In polycrystalline materials, grain boundaries further strengthen materials by impeding dislocation motion.
Momentum is defined as the product of an object's mass and velocity. It is a vector quantity that possesses both magnitude and direction. The conservation of momentum states that the total momentum of an isolated system remains constant unless an external force acts on it. Viscoelastic materials exhibit both viscous and elastic properties, straining over time when stress is applied but also partially recovering when stress is removed. Common tests used to characterize viscoelastic materials include creep-recovery, stress relaxation, and cyclic tests by applying and removing constant loads/strains over time.
- There are two types of reference frames: inertial and non-inertial frames. Inertial frames obey Newton's laws of motion while non-inertial frames do not.
- The Earth is considered an inertial frame even though it rotates and revolves because the accelerations produced are small enough to be negligible.
- In non-inertial frames, pseudo or fictitious forces appear even when no real forces are acting on an object. These forces arise due to the acceleration of the non-inertial reference frame.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.

2. In short:
It is a self-adhesive & compressible
sleeve
What is Twinlock?
3. Hard coated sleeve
+ Polyurethane foam
+ stabilisation film
+ adhesive polymer
How is it built up?
=
4. The ability to mount Flexo-
printing plates without the use
of tape.
The polymer adhesion and
compressibility is permanent
and will not lose its properties.
Permanent* adhesion, without

– Guaranteed!
* Lifetime guaranty
What makes it so
special?
5. By simply cleaning the surface of the
sleeve, the adhesion is re-activated…
Applying primer to the edge of the
plate increases the level of
adhesion…
Plate mounting is the same as on
tape…
…however, plate removal is much
easier as Twinlock adhesion does not
increase under pressure.
Time saved is 30 to 40%
How does it work?
6. We offer 4 different identities in 3
different hardnesses:
1) Soft
2) Medium
3) Hard
>85% we produce is Medium
<15% is Hard/ Soft
Product types
7. For all available tape densities we
offer a matching Twinlock
compressibility.
The print quality on Twinlock is as
good as on tape, but Twinlock;
• Is more consistent than tape
• Absorbs bounce better than
tape
• Enables you to reach higher
press speeds compared to tape
Tape/ Twinlock
conversion list
8. • Closed cell foam tape is only temporarily
compressible.
• The air pockets collapse under print pressure.
• The result is inconsistent print quality and regular
on press adjustments.
• Twinlock is built on Polyurethane foam.
• Open cell foam does not collapse under print
pressure and can absorb bounce more
effectively.
• This provides a more reliable and consistent print
quality and therefore less on press adjustments.
Not all foams are the same
9. The outside diameter (OD) of Twinlock is
more accurate than any sleeve mounted
with tape. Tolerance of a Twinlock sleeve is
±2/100mm (±20μ).
The final polymer layer is custom made to
precisely match the calculated outer
diameter reference.
Every sleeve is measured by laser during,
and at the end of the production process to
ensure total accuracy.
This also guarantees exact measurements
on any re-orders, accompanying sets or re-
coats.

10. To ensure optimum Twinlock
performance we have created a range
of specially developed support
products.
These enable the operator to work
with Twinlock most efficiently, and
obtain the best possible results.
We will guarantee Twinlock’s
performance as stated when it is used
in conjunction with the Polymount
approved products.
