What is a podcast?

The term is defined as quot;a digital recording of a
radio broadcast or similar program, made
available on the internet for downloading to a
personal audio playerquot;.
The word is derived from a combination of
quot;broadcastingquot; and quot;iPodquot;.

Podcasting: Preparation
Checklist:
●

Download and install Audacity with LAME plug-in
–
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows
●

Locate the lame_enc.dll file where you may find it later
●

to convert to an MP3
Make sure speaker and microphone work

Drivers are installed

Make sure hard drive space is sufficient (6
–
megabytes of space per minute of sound)
Do a volume check before recording
–
Sign up for a free blog, if needed
–
www.blogger.com

Save royalty free soundtracks, if needed

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices

Podcasting: RECORD

Record your audio
●

● Edit the result

● Convert to MP3

● Odeo upload

● Replay the result

● Display in a blog or web site


Podcasting: Record your audio
Start Audacity software and do a sound level check
●


Avoid: volume too high will clip the envelope at the top and
●

bottom


Check recording settings: mono, 44100 Hz, and 16-bit
●


Each time recording is stopped and restarted, a new track is
●

made


Mute tracks so playback does not interfere with recording.
●


Podcasting: Edit the result
Cut out unwanted sounds: Highlight, then Edit --> Cut
●


Add any desired sound effects: Highlight, then Effect and
●

choose effect. This one is Effect --> Echo


Add soundtrack: First, import a soundtrack, Project --> Import
●

Audio


Add soundtrack: Next, click on the down arrow and select Split
●

Stereo Track


Add soundtrack: Delete unneeded, duplicate soundtrack
●


Add soundtrack: Add a new, empty track
●


Add soundtrack: Cut and paste desired portions of soundtrack
●

to the new track, including silence


Add soundtrack: Music added to beginning and end with a cut
●

and paste


Add soundtrack: Delete now unneeded soundtrack
●


Add soundtrack: Highlight beginning music and add a cross
●

fade in, Effect --> Cross Fade In


Add soundtrack: Highlight ending music and add a cross fade
●

out, Effect --> Cross Fade Out


Save the result, File --> Save Project
●


Podcasting: Convert to MP3
Convert to an MP3 by selecting File --> Export As MP3
●


Click OK on the warning
●


Select a file name. Notice the name will end in the file
●

extension of .mp3


Complete the tag information
●


ID3 tag information will display in media players such as
●

Windows Media Player


The first time you Export As MP3, Audacity will ask for the
●

location of the lame_end.dll file. This file contains the library of
instructions to tell Audacity how to make an MP3. A safe place
to store lame_end.dll is in the Audacity program files directory.


Click the Yes button
●


A popup screen will allow you to locate lame_end.dll
●


Navigate to the location where lame_end.dll is stored and
●

select it


Podcasting: Odeo upload
Odeo URL: http://studio.odeo.com/create/home
●


Sign-in
●


After login, click on Odeo Studio. In the Odeo Studio screen,
●

select Upload Audio from Your Computer


Navigate to your file and select it
●


Wait while your file uploads. Maximum size at Odeo for a free
●

upload is 50 megabytes. But, you may wish to heed the Odeo
warning:

P.S.: Your upload could take several
minutes depending on the size of your
audio file and the speed of your web
connection. Also, files larger than 25MB
are more likely to get stuck.


Wait while your file uploads. This may take a long, long time.
●


Once your audio is uploaded, click on Saved Audio to see your
●

list of files.


Select your file. An editing screen appears to complete a
●

description of your file which will appear when replaying


Podcasting: Replay the result
You may replay the resultant upload
●


Podcasting: Display in a blog
Near the bottom of the editing screen, copy and paste the
●

code to to put the audio in a blog or web site
