2. Water: A Special Issue
Water Is life
• The amount of moisture on Earth
has not changed. The water the
dinosaurs drank millions of years
ago is the same water that falls
as rain today. But will there be
enough for a more crowded world?
3. Water: A Special Issue
Sacred Waters
• From the droplets in a baptismal
font to the scattering of ashes on
a holy river, water blesses our
lives.
4. Water: A Special Issue
the big melt
• Glaciers in the high heart of Asia
feed its greatest rivers, lifelines
for two billion people. Now the ice
and snow are diminishing.
5. Water: A Special Issue
The Pipe Dreams
• A heroic system of
dams, pumps, and canals can’t
stave off a water crisis.
6. Importance Of Water
Functions in our body-
• It regulates the temperature of the
human body,
• carries nutrients and oxygen to
cells,
• cushions joints,
• protects organs and tissues,
• helps in digestion,
• lubricates joints &
• removes waste.
7. Importance Of Water
composition in our body
• 60% - 75% of the adult human body is
water,
• 82% of blood is water,
• 70% of the brain and 90% of the
lungs are made up of water,
• Blood in animals and sap in plants
is composed mainly of water.
8. Water Depletion
• Water depletion is the
decrease in the amount of
potable water
• the term “potable” means
usable water
9. Water Depletion
When Neil Armstrong saw the Earth from the
Moon, it appeared blue! This is because water
covers more than two-thirds of the Earth's
surface. But fresh water represents less than
0.5% of the total water on Earth. Seas and oceans
account for 97% of all water on Earth; but their
waters contain dissolved salts and are therefore
unfit to drink. The remaining 2.5% is locked up in
icecaps or the soil, which is why one often hears
of water scarcity in many areas.
10. Reasons For Water Depletion
• Worldwide, the consumption of
water is doubling every 20 years-
• Increase in population.
• To satisfy the needs of increasing
population, i.e. Industrialization,
Urbanization and Agricultural
demands.
• Deforestation.
• Inadequate government policies.
11. Understanding Water Issues
Global
• it’s estimated that by 2050, the
earth may not have a single
source of fresh-water.
• The Burden of Thirst
• If the millions of women who haul
water long distances had a faucet
by their door, whole societies
could be transformed.
12. Understanding Water Issues
India
• In the list of 122 countries rated on
quality of portable water, India ranks a
lowly 120.
• It is estimated that by 2020, India will
become a water-stressed nation. Nearly
50% of villages still don’t have any
source of protected drinking water.
• WOMEN have to travel many miles to fetch
a bit of fresh water for the daily needs.
• 37.7 million People –over 75% of whom are
children are afflicted by waterborne
diseases every year.
13. Understanding Water Issues
India
• Often babies die of dehydration
and there are major fights in
villages for freshwater.
• Yet it is the poor who pay a heavier
price spending around Rs 6700
crore annually on treatment of
waterborne diseases.
14. Water Facts
• Today, 1 child dies every 21 seconds
due to a water-related disease.
• 780 million people lack access to
clean water….(almost 2 ½ more than
the united states population)
• More people have a mobile phone than
a toilet.
• An American taking a five-minute
shower uses more water than the
average person in a developing
country slum uses for an entire day.
15. Water Facts
• It is estimated that nearly 10% of the
global disease burden could be
reduced through improved water
supply, sanitation, hygiene, and
water resource management.
• People living in informal settlements
(i.e. slums) often pay 5-10 times more
per liter of water than wealthy
people living in the same city.

17. Small Steps Immense Impacts
In Home-
• Get your taps repaired.
• Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or
wastebasket.
• Replacing an 18 liter per flush toilet
with an ultra-low volume (ULV) 6
litre flush model represents a 70%
savings in water flushed.
• Take shorter showers.
• Use your dishwasher and clothes
washer for only full loads.
18. Small Steps Immense Impacts
In the Yard & Garden
• Plant drought-resistant lawns, shrubs
and plants.
• Put a layer of mulch around trees and
plants.
• Water your lawn only when it needs it,
i.e., don’t water it too frequently.
• Water during the early or late parts of
the day.
• Don't run the hose/pipe while washing
your car.
19. Ways to Make Water Potable
Physical Chemical
By using tap
filters
By UV Rays
By chemical
disinfection
By boiling
