Pocahontas was a Native American woman born around 1595 who saved the life of English explorer John Smith when he was captured. She often acted as a messenger between the Powhatan tribe and the Jamestown settlers, bringing food to the starving colonists. However, tensions rose between the groups as the English demanded more supplies. Pocahontas was later kidnapped by the English to gain leverage over her father. While in captivity, she converted to Christianity and married tobacco farmer John Rolfe in 1614. She traveled to England but died in 1617 at the age of 21 during the return voyage.
