4. 2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The sponsor of the project is Mr. Vermeulen. He is a teacher at the Rotterdam Business School and he
wants to expand the elective “Social Entrepreneurship”. By Social Entrepreneurship is meant: the
process of creating solutions to social problems by adapting and taking into account while decision
making, the eventual social value. The elective is part of the Honours Programme at HR, and
challenges students with topics related to Social Entrepreneurship.
To accomplish the expansion, Mr. Vemeulen set up this project. The project consists of the following:
1. To find four social ventures/companies that want to collaborate with the RBS to help expanding
the elective by giving the students the opportunity to experience how Social Entrepreneurship
works in real life.
This includes contacting and approaching these companies and getting their cooperation to
provide the students, who take the elective “Social Entrepreneurship”, with tasks/assignments
related to the subject.
2. To make a short movie of three minutes, which shows what exactly the company does, what’s
it about, short background of the company itself and what it stands for. The movie has to be
professional to show in a representative way to the students what they can expect from the
company.
3. To find a social venture/company in Japan and Ethiopia and provide information about it and
investigate if there are any possible options for them to collaborate with RBS. If there is
information about these companies on YouTube, that will be added as well in the final report.
3 THE PROJECT RESULT
Project objectives:
1. To find 4 social ventures that want to collaborate with RBS and provide the
students that take Social Entrepreneurship as an elective with tasks related
to Social Entrepreneurship.
The social ventures we need to find don’t have to meet a lot of criteria. They mainly need to be
involved in social movements and they have to be an active venture with ongoing projects. Most of
these ventures are non-profit, but some chose to make a profit out of the work they do and still
provide social benefits to the society in or nearby Rotterdam.
2. To make a movie for each social venture that shows what the company is
about and what it stands for. (3 minutes)
The movie needs to provide the viewers with basic information about the social ventures we want to
collaborate with, what projects and achievements they have accomplished in the past, what projects
are ongoing and what projects they have planned for the future. The video has to be around 3
minutes.
Principles of Project Management Page 4 2014
5. If any costs are involved in the video, we have to make an execution plan of shooting the video and
give detailed descriptions on the costs and what should be included in the video. We do not execute
the plan, we just provide information and give the plan to our sponsor so he can decide whether to
execute the plan or not. He will base his decision mainly on the costs so we need to focus on low costs.
3. To find a social venture in Japan and Ethiopia and give information about it and
investigate if there are any options to collaborate with RBS.
We are going to search for a social venture in Japan and Ethiopia and do research on these ventures.
Research will be done on what kind of ventures they are, how they execute their plan, what kind of
project they have and what their goals are. This information will be used as an example for our
sponsor so that he will have an idea of how things work in these countries. We will also look for
opportunities in the future to collaborate with these social ventures. If there is information on You
Tube about the companies in English, this will be provided to the sponsor as well.
One of our group members is Japanese and another is Ethiopian. They both will be responsible for
doing the research about their own countries.
4 THE PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Several activities will be carried out in order to accomplish the project objectives mentioned under the
‘project results’. This section describes which activities need to be done for each objective separately.
Selection of Social Ventures
Eventually a list of 4 companies has to be delivered to the sponsor. The main criteria for the selection
process is the companies’ engagement in Social Entrepreneurship--creating value for the society.
These companies could be commercial or non-profit organizations, based in Rotterdam or
environment (reasonable distance for the students to travel for their tasks).
The companies will be selected according to their reputation in the subject area. Following that an
initial interview will take place by representatives of the project group.
The purpose of the interview will be to:
•Check their qualifications according to the selection criteria,
•Gather more information about the social venture itself; and
• Obtain their cooperation in the project
Making the Film Clip
A three-minute movie will be filmed for each company. The movie will show what the company is
about and what it stands for. The aim of the movie clips is to inform the students, who take the
elective, about the companies’ role regarding to Social Entrepreneurship.
There are 4 possibilities in providing the videos:
• We can make the movie ourselves. By filming it with a borrowed camera and try
to edit the movie using the knowledge we have.
Principles of Project Management Page 5 2014
6. • We can shoot the movie ourselves and ask for help from people who know how
to edit a movie. By for example approaching students who do graphical design
education. Or ask a reliable friend who would want to help us.
• If the company already has a movie about their own company we could use that
video (with their permission of course)
. We will hire someone to make the movie and edit everything professionally. We
won’t execute this option because there is no budget. We will just make an
overview of what the movie will look like and the additional costs involved and
leave it up to the sponsor what he will do with the information.
Possibility number four will be most likely to use, because our sponsor wants a professional movie and
option four guarantees that. Option three can be combined with option four in case the movie the
company already has, meets all the quality requirements.
Find two companies in Ethiopia and Japan
An additional two companies will be selected according to the same criteria as for the 4 social ventures
from objective 1.The only difference is that these two companies have to be established in Japan and
Ethiopia. There will be researched what the companies do, and what their goals are. Besides that the
project members will investigate if there are possibilities for RBS to collaborate with these social
ventures in the future. It would become part of a minor study in that case.
Since there’s no obligation to interview these companies, information on their profile and a list of
options on collaboration will be delivered to the sponsor.
Two of the group members, each from Japan and Ethiopia, are responsible for researching and
gathering information.
Project Time
A total of eight weeks is allotted to complete the first stage of the project-- the Project Proposal and
the Project Plan. Once that is completed within the time frame, an addition of eight weeks will be
available for the project execution.
5 RESOURCES REQUIRED (PEOPLE, SKILLS, EQUIPMENT, COSTS)
The estimated resources that are required and/or available to make this project successful are listed as
follows:
People and skills (Belbin test)
The project group is made up of six people, which should be more than enough to complete the
project. Below are the members of the project group and the skills (according to the Belbin test) every
member possesses.
Laura: Implementer/Plant
Principles of Project Management Page 6 2014
7. Dastan: Shaper/Team Worker
Martijn: Team Worker/Monitor Evaluator
Mako: Coordinator / Plant
Menna: Plant / Monitor Evaluator
Gino: Team worker/ Implementer
Functions according to our project:
- Project manager
- Timekeeper
- Representative for meeting the possible companies
- Researcher
- Note keeper
- Cameraman
Equipment:
• Camera
• PC
• Pen / Paper
• Printer
• Project Management book
Costs:
• Printing costs
• Contacting costs
• Time
There is no budget to cover any costs. The costs we talk about are just little costs for around 20 euro at
most.
6 FEASIBILITY AND RISKS
This project consists of 3 objectives. Each objective has its own risks that have to be taken into account
while working on the project.
The first objective is to find 4 social ventures that are willing to collaborate with RBS and therefore
provide the students that are taking Social Entrepreneurship as an elective with tasks.
The biggest risk is that there won’t be 4 companies willing to collaborate with the students from RBS. It
is our job as a project group to have a good story, don’t make any mistakes while having an
appointment with the possible companies and look representative. Only that way the chances are in
our favor.
The second objective is to make a short movie about each social venture of 3 minutes. A lot of things
can go wrong here, especially according time management (as in not finishing in time). Therefore it’s
important to start in time with finding the companies so there is enough time to shoot and edit the
Principles of Project Management Page 7 2014
8. movie. Besides that, it is important to work with people who are reliable. Since none of the group
members is able to edit a movie professionally, there will have to be a ‘third person’ who can do that.
The final objective is to find a social venture in Japan and Ethiopia, and identify what they are doing
and how they work and investigate possibilities for HR to collaborate with them if Social
Entrepreneurship becomes a minor study. Since it’s mostly finding and researching information that
already exists, the risks are very low for this objective.
There are a couple internal risks that could also cause problems during executing the project. Such as
team members that don’t stick to deadlines, members who don’t take the tasks as serious as they
should and members who try to do as less as possible. To prevent such problems, a Code of Conduct
has been created. Every member has to take that as the guideline for working together.
The project is feasible because there is enough time to accomplish all the objectives (namely block 3
and 4(8 weeks each)). Besides the project group consists of 6 people, which should be more than
enough. The only thing that will probably be outsourced is editing the movies since none of the group
members is capable of doing that in a professional way.
If all the risks are taken into account and a good planning will be followed, the project will succeed.
7 BENEFITS
This project will bring several benefits to all the stakeholders. The table gives a quick overview of all
benefits per stakeholder.
To start with the sponsor (Mr. Vermeulen), he has in mind to upgrade the elective Social
Entrepreneurship into a minor subject. The project will help him make the next step in that process.
The social ventures will experience benefits as well as a result of the project. Students will get a good
impression of the social venture, and tell other people (mouth-to-mouth advertisement). Besides that
the social venture will be able to spread what they stand for among another group of society.
The project group will get a lot of experience by doing this project in how to first prepare and
eventually how to execute a real project. That’s beneficial for their future career.
Students who will take the elective Social Entrepreneurship in the future will benefit from this project
as well. There will be more possibilities to choose a company where they can experience real life Social
Entrepreneurship.
The project Advisor will also benefit from this project because he will get more experience in how
students from his class function in a project management environment.

The project name is Social Entrepreneurship, Expanding Possibilities. The project consists of 3 main
objectives that have to be accomplished to finish the project successfully.
There are certain risks that could ruin this project, but those are identified and when a risk occurs, the
project group can take action to prevent things will go wrong.
Cost-benefit analysis, there are no numbers we will have to work with. The costs are mostly indirect
costs for now for example the time of the project members, materials and maybe for making the
movie, but for now no direct costs for that. And benefit is more an investment than a profit. We invest
in the final goal of our sponsor (making the elective in a minor).
The project is achievable because the objectives are reasonable and the decision should be a ‘go’.
