This clinic at the Training Magazine Online Conference focused on the role of “play” in online learning, exploring design thinking methods and tools that you can be used to engage your learning communities in “play.” Participants had the opportunity to experiment with these methods and tools, and actualize “play” through the use of Learning Battle Cards—a deck of playing cards designed to inspire and facilitate a variety of instructional design and development methods.

In this reflection, I am going to discuss a situation that I was in last weekend in which I made a wrong decision and the outcome was unfavorable.
Slide 2: Location
This event took place at a local recreation center. I was playing basketball in an organized league and there was about 100 people watching the game.
Slide 3: Task
What needed to get done was that we needed to win the basketball game since it was a playoff game. I thought that we would win the game because we were the better team and we had the better matchups. The reason for this is because I played point guard and the other team had no one that could guard me.
Slide 4: My Actions
During the end of the basketball game, the referee called a flagrant foul on me because I fouled a player on the other team a little too hard (unintentionally). Naturally, I was furious because I thought it was a bad call. I first argued with the referee. Then I got carried away and threw off armband. Fearing I might do something stupid, my coach took me out of the game and we ended up losing. At the time I felt like my world was turned upside down but my coach explained to me that winning isn’t everything. Still, as I watched the game progress and the other team score points, I could recall that I was teary-eyed. In basketball, as in any other sport, when your coach takes you out of the game it is embarrassing especially when you know you’re in the wrong.

I could recall that while I was sitting on the bench watching our team lose, I knew that I should have kept my cool. After all, it was just a game and I should not have let it affect me as much as it did. If I acted calmly maybe then my coach would have let me play and we could have won the game. The result did not affect only me but also my teammates and I was embarrassed and apologetic to my teammates since they worked so hard to get into the playoffs.

My name is Robert and I coached Chaand’s basketball team “The Bayhead Ballers.” I volunteer on the weekends and help young men achieve their potential.

There was a basketball game that Saturday and it was a playoff game. Therefore I called my team in early to practice and drew up some plays; everyone was working together and focused. It was game-time and the crowd was filling in. This was my first year of coaching and I wanted to prove to myself that I could win this game for the kids.

It was game-time and my team was warming up. I could see it in their faces that they wanted to win badly—not just for the simple fact of winning, but for beating our rivals, “The Hardcore Hoopers.” I did not want to let them down, but also I wanted them to know that winning isn’t everything. So in our first team huddle, I clearly stated “I want you guys to play hard, but remember, have fun, play as a team, and do not let a win or a loss affect you. Keep your head held high.”

Looking at life’s situations with a sense of humor and laughter provides perspective and helps keep things in balance when life seems unfair.

This talk revolves around my personal journey in trying to resolve some of my own issues with depression by applying techniques I learned during my career as a game designer.
I found that a lot of the emotional and mental issues we experience in our modern society are caused by our badly designed day-to-day lifestyles which are putting us in a constant negative reward loop.
I believe a society suffering from obesity and depression is a clear indication that it has lost it's a sense of balance. And the reason we are unable to understand how to fix it's because we have accidentally created a simulation of life that's not connected to our biological instincts.
We have basically written a social game that we can't win because we never understood it rules.
