BLACK FUTURES: COLLECTING SOCIOCULTURAL DATA THROUGH MACHINE LEARNINGJohn1Lorcan
Although African American community archives have appeared, there is a lack of incorporation of
information-seeking, behaviour, language transmission, categorization, and community archival datasets
in data collection and machine learning (ML) environments. To address this, as the autoethnographer, I
propose to develop a future body of research targeting the African American community in Texas,
obtaining valuable insights about their engagement with ML. Eun Seo Jo's literature review emphasizes the
roles of community archives in ML environments and the strategies necessary for this space to be
considered a valuable resource in research and information. As the autoethnographer, I use this research
to explore effective strategies for machine learning environments to collaborate with African American
community archives and incorporate user input into ML data collection practices. The aim of the study is
to examine an original body of literature to aid me with my plan of action in creating a research study
about machine learning in African American community archives.

The Media Researcher as Storyteller: Working with Digitized Audiovisual SourcesBerber Hagedoorn
This study offers a first exploratory critique of digital tools' socio-technical affordances in terms of support for narrative creation by media researchers. We reflect on narrative creation processes of research, writing and story composition by Media Studies and Humanities scholars as well as media professionals (journalists, television/image researchers, documentary filmmakers, digital storytellers, media innovation experts) working with cross-media and audiovisual sources, and the pivotal ways in which digital tools inform these processes of search and storytelling. Our study proposes to add to the existing body of user-centered Digital Humanities research by presenting the insights of a cross-disciplinary user study. This involves, broadly speaking, researchers studying audiovisual materials in a co-creative design process, set to fine-tune and further develop a digital tool that supports audiovisual research through exploratory search. This article focuses on how researchers – in both academic as well as professional settings – use digital search technologies in their daily work practices to discover and explore (crossmedia, digital) audiovisual archival material, specifically when studying 'disruptive' media events . We focus on three user types, (1) Media Studies researchers; (2) Humanities researchers that use digitized audiovisual materials as a source for research and (3) media professionals who need to retrieve audiovisual materials for audiovisual text productions. Our study primarily provides insights into the search, retrieval and narrative creation practices of these user groups. However, a user study such as this in which qualitative methods (co-creative design sessions, focus groups, research diaries, questionnaires) are combined, affords fine-grained insights, and informs conclusions about the role of digital tools in meaning-creation processes around working with audiovisual sources.

correspond to the development of the different markets linked to electronic platforms and social networks on the

Platform Capitalism and the New Value Economy in the Academy Mark Carrigan
The arrival of what is being called the ‘big data’ revolution in societies around the globe has presented social scientists with new challenges as to how best to understand it as a phenomenon, on the one hand, and what conceptual and methodological approaches we might use to research it, on the other (e.g. Burrows and Savage, 2017; Venturini et al., 2017). The focus of this World Yearbook on big data and comparative methodology is thus a timely opportunity to engage with, and begin to theorize, these developments.
This is not to suggest the matter of data, the academy and comparison is an under researched area. Far from it! There is a growing body of published work on big data-driven global rankings of universities. However much of this commentary is either a critique of quantification, with the argument that numbers are political, or to show how such comparisons generate anxiety about overall placements in ranking thus stimulating efforts to improve.
This presentation discusses using mobile technology for field learning activities and multimodal presentations. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Social media are taking an important place in contemporary life.
Besides other things, they are discussed as data collections – in relation to
terms like big data, computational social science, digital methods,
database marketing, surveillance, social sorting, etc.
Many disciplines have begun to study social media, applying various
methodologies, but there is an explosion in data-driven research.
The promise is (cheap and detailed) access to what people do, not what
they say they do; to their behavior, exchange, ideas, and sentiments.
3. This presentation
How do we talk about social media data? How do we analyze them? What
is our frame of thought? How do we go further in terms of methodological
imagination and expressivity?
Instead of a totalizing search for a "logic" of data analysis, we could
inquire into the rich vocabulary of analytical gestures that constitute the
practice of data analysis.

method? What is "good" knowledge?
How do we reason on the basis of data?

Hacking (1991) builds the concept of "style of reasoning" on A. C.
Crombie’s (1994) "styles of scientific thinking":

These are styles of "giving reasons", styles of making truth and knowledge.
What kind of reasoning are we mobilizing in data analysis? Is this simply
quantitative empiricism, counting facts?
17. Quality / quantity
"One of my favorite fantasies is a dialogue between Mills and Lazarsfeld in which the former
reads to the latter the first sentence of The Sociological Imagination: 'Nowadays men often
feel that their private lives are a series of traps.' Lazarsfeld immediately replies: 'How many
men, which men, how long have they felt this way, which aspects of their private lives
bother them, do their public lives bother them, when do they feel free rather than trapped,
what kinds of traps do they experience, etc., etc., etc.'." (Maurice Stein, cit. in Gitlin 1978)
Theory vs. empiricism, macro vs. micro, qualitative vs. quantitative, inductive vs.
deductive, confirmatory vs. exploratory, understanding vs. explaining, etc.
The promise of data analysis, applied to exhaustive (and cheap) data, is to bridge
the gap between different epistemic stances, e.g. "quali-quanti" (Latour 2010).
We need to think creatively about new analytical gestures rather than slavishly
follow sterile methodological paradigms.
18. Flusser (1991) describes gestures as having convention and structure, but
also as different from reflexes, because translating a moment of freedom.
It is an "art of doing" (de Certeau 1980), a movement of the body that has
no sufficient causal explanation.
We investigate the structure of data by creating "views" of the data.
The notion of gesture indicates that data does not speak for itself, we
approach it with particular epistemic techniques (methods) related to a
sense of purpose, a "will to know" (Foucault 1976).

Analytical gestures produce orderings, lists, tables, charts, etc. that are
considered to be saying something about the data / phenomenon.

☉ The researchers and their imagination, knowledge, and skill
We need to think all three levels together.

There is a lot of excitement about social media data analysis, but our
understanding of styles and analytical gestures is still very poor.
We need interrogation and critiques of methodology that are developed
from engagement and historical / conceptual investigation.
We need analytical gestures that are more closely tied to concepts from
the humanities and social sciences.
Visualization and simpler tools are very interesting but require technical
and conceptual literacy to deliver more than (deceptive) illustrations.

Data can be thought of as a kind of "observation" rather than survey-based research.
I've been doing this for only three years, so I'm still learning lot each day. But I would like to share some of the things I've learned so far.Not monolithic, but full of choice.=> I'll give a couple of recommendations, that are debatable, of course.
People do a lot of different things on Twitter, Facebook, etc. – and just because you and your immediate vicinity seem to have coherent practices, this does not mean others have.But there are conventions emerging, national, subcultural, etc.The banal, the political, and the commercial coexist in the same functional containers, behind the same interfaces.
Differentiation of scales (topological forms) is produced through technical means and emerge through social dynamics. Variations in scale are less institutional and more topological. (example: big Twitter accounts.)The idea that this would foster equality comes from the fact that indeed, everybody is a node. We think in terms of properties, not in terms of structure/dynamics. Status is not what you are, but how you are connected.=> Variety in topics, variety in scales. Size is the main differentiator. (compare to university, organizations)

Very large scale systems on the one side, but highly concentrated data repositories on the other.Here at DMI we use a lot of listing devices (e.g. Google) to centralize and search the Web.
The promise of data analysis is, of course, to use that data to make sense of all the complexity.All of this to say: it’s kind of complicated, but we've also got a lot of pretty good data.Practical: Look at the help sections and other explanations, study API documentation.

Simply plotting events is an analytical gesture. (=> pattern)

Visual / spatial analysis is already very interesting, but graph theory allows to do much more. Networks are eminently calculable.All in all, this process resulted in the specification of nine centrality measures based on three conceptual foundations. Three are based on the degrees of points and are indexes of communication activity. Three are based on the betweenness of points and are indexes of potential for control of communication.
