Volcanoes form as a result of hot spots within the earth's crust and mantle where weak spots allow liquid rock to break through the surface. Some eruptions are more explosive than others, emitting ash and small lava fragments. Earthquakes occur within the solid parts of the earth's crust and mantle due to motion in tectonic plates. Tectonic plates interact with each other at boundaries where they converge, diverge, or move past each other sideways, and forces within the earth drive the movement of these plates over time.
