Planning,
Reviewing
and Safety
Why do we Plan?
 Plan each session to ensure that it:
     Is safe
     Is motivating
     Leads to improved
      skill development
     Is fun
     Is progressive
The Planning Process
  1.Information gathering
  2.Setting goals
  3.Programming activities
  4.Reviewing the session
Information Gathering
 Age of participants
 Number of participants in
  session
 Skill level of participants
 What equipment and space
  you have to work with
 Any illness or injury
Setting Goals
 What are the main aims of
     the session?
 Are you looking to cover
     one sport? One skill?
Programming Activities – Parts
of a Training Session
   Session introduction
   Warm up
   Skill/fitness activities (use
    a 'Game Sense' approach
    where appropriate)
   Cool down
   Review
Selecting/Designing Activities
 When selecting or designing an activity, ensure that it:
    Involves all participants
    most of the time
   Is motivating and/or fun
   Is safe
   Is relatively easy to
    organise
 Has a logical flow from
    previous activities
Teaching Tips – Safety

     Wearing of safety equipment
     Avoidance of rough surfaces
     Activities in confined areas
Teaching Tips – Safety
 Distribution of equipment:
    Distribute in a safe,orderly
    fashion
   Equipment monitors can be
    nominated
   Don’t leave equipment lying
    around
 Explain how to collect equipment
at the conclusion of each lesson
 Ensure that all equipment is
    returned
Injury Management
Stop the activity
Talk to the person
Observe the injured part
Prevent further injury
(via the three options below)

 Get help (Severe injury)
RICER regime (Less severe injury)
– See next slide for detail
Play on (Minor injury)
Injury Management – RICER Regime
Immediate management of sprains, strains, corks, bumps
and bruises should follow this procedure:

    Rest
    Ice
    Compression
    Elevation
    Referral
Reviewing the Session
 Self reflection tools:
    Diary
    Mentor
    Video self-analysis
    Self-evaluation checklist
 Seek feedback from participants,
 parents and other coaches

 Consider what you do well, not just
 what you need to improve
Reviewing the Session
 At the end of each session the coach should ask:
     Did the Participants enjoy
     the session?

     out of the session?
 Did I enjoy the session?
  Modify the next coaching
  session based on this
