The document provides a review and reflection by a student on their first year creative media production course. They discuss enjoying animation, poster design, and editing the most. Challenges included difficulty focusing and having to rush a project after getting COVID. The student felt they improved most at research and their strongest technical skill is editing. Their favorite project was a poster or magazine cover because they were visually appealing. The least enjoyed project was their first music video due to a lack of experience and COVID issues. They realize they need to manage time better. For the future, they are interested in filming, directing, and working on large productions. They are unsure of their path after college but want to gain experience on film sets. More research on university
This document outlines the tasks and assessments for Unit 3: Introduction to Professional Practice. Students will research career opportunities and skills required in the creative media industry, create an illustrated guide and practitioner profile. They will develop a five-year plan and complete a music video process log and end of year review reflecting on their progress and setting goals. The tasks aim to help students investigate options and development needs for their future careers.
Here are a few things you could improve on for future projects:
- Be more flexible with your initial plans and ideas. Don't be afraid to pivot if something isn't working.
- Do more research on storytelling techniques like building tension. Understanding how to craft an engaging narrative is important.
- Plan your production schedule better. Leave more time for editing and polishing versus coming up with new ideas last minute.
- Get feedback earlier from others. Sharing drafts of your script or sounds could help catch issues before the end.
Overall it's great you were willing to change course when needed. With some tweaks to your planning process, your next audio project will benefit. The most important thing is

The document summarizes Charlie Stevens' production process evaluation for a research project. It describes the strengths and weaknesses of their research, planning, time management, technical qualities of camera and editing/post-production, aesthetic qualities, audience appeal, and includes feedback from peers. The feedback praised the variety of shots, color grading, and camera techniques but suggested filming in additional locations for more variety.

The student evaluated their production process for a music video project. Their research strengths included analytical breakdowns of techniques in other videos and online tutorials. Weaknesses included a lack of organization in research. Planning strengths were storyboards, but the actual video required improvisation on location. Peer feedback noted the good coloring and editing but suggested using more locations and a clearer narrative focus or central person. The student agreed more locations and a better camera could have improved the project.
This document provides guidance for completing a case study analysis of music videos. It is split into four tasks: 1) outlining the purposes of music videos, 2) describing common styles, techniques and conventions, 3) conducting a case study analysis of at least three videos by an artist, and 4) linking the concepts to the student's own work. The case study involves discussing camerawork, editing, genre conventions, and intertextuality for selected videos. It encourages adding images and links to support points.
The document provides an initial response and ideas for an audio story project. It discusses potential story ideas that were considered, including The Quiet Place and a haunted house soundscape. Research on existing products like The Quiet Place and Dr. Who was found to be useful for techniques like using ambient sounds or exaggerated voice effects. The format of a drama with narration is thought to best fit the chosen idea of a ghost story about ghost hunters and satanic forces. The response includes an initial title and logline for the original story. Ideas for sound effects, narration and storytelling are outlined. The initial feeling about the project is positive excitement, with a note to do more research on satanic names and religious elements.
The document provides examples of audio projects that could be used for research, including The Archers radio drama, Short Cuts documentary, Lore podcast, and Doctor Who and Soundscapes audio clips. It also includes instructions to delete the slide when done with the research.
Charlie Stevens documented the production process for their music video. They faced technical issues with camera batteries and had to film alone due to last minute personnel changes. Location and weather went well. In editing, Charlie learned color grading and used adjustment layers. They cut footage to the music and added effects. Problems included a lack of footage, understanding editing techniques, and not having staff help. Charlie plans to improve planning, contingencies, equipment, humility, and asking for help on future projects.

The document provides a self-evaluation by Charlie Stevens of their research, planning, time management, technical qualities, aesthetic qualities, audience appeal, and peer feedback for a production project. Some strengths identified include effective research techniques, previsualization through storyboards, managing time well given limitations, using color grading, cinematic bars, and varied camera angles. Weaknesses include a lack of organization in research, an unstructured storyline, limited filming locations, and room for improvement in camera quality. Peer feedback praised the theme, shots, transitions and color grading but suggested additional locations could have strengthened the video.

The student created a nature video for a class project. In reviewing their work, they analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of their research, planning, time management, technical skills, aesthetics, and audience appeal. They received feedback from peers which noted that the video had clear themes and shots but could have benefited from more location variety. The student agreed with the feedback that filming in additional locations would improve future videos.

3. 5 of the Best Street Food
Finds in London – Great
Big Story
• I have identified some of
the visual and technical
qualities that make this
product work.
• In my analysis I came to
the conclusion that the
fast flow and quick
smooth editing keeps the
viewer engaged and
entertained.
• I found that the video also
used a hook to keep
viewers interested and
willing to watch the video.
• The video utilises great
camera shots with lots of
movement and
foreground and is split
into segments that are
joined together visually
with zoom blur transitions
and audio swooshes.
4. I Broke Dumb Laws In
Front Of Police - Vice
This video further evidenced
my theory of people liking
short videos with a hook, as I
concluded that the younger
viewers where hooked to the
video; the premise in the title
that made them click on it,
then with the immediate hook
reconfirming what they are
going to see in more detail
than a title would allow.
Furthermore, the video has a
constant fast pace without
focusing on one specific law for
too long.
From these two video I have
established some basic
foundations for my video. It
will be fast pace and not too
long, which means that I will
have to film with the intent of
getting a lot of footage and be
willing to remove most of it. I
have also established that my
target audience like quirky
things
6. Audio
Poetic Expression – in
documentary films
they tend to express
things in a beautiful
and poetic way.
A cool shot I want to
get is a shot of the
sun reflecting on the
surface of the river

side of the bridge.
When shooting at said
locations I would like to follow
some basic rules as to things I
need to shoot.

7. Potential approaches
• I think a potential approach that I will have, is to film a lot of nice
cinematic shots of said locations by myself and then integrate it with
footage of me walking in said locations on a different day where I can
talk about them. I can also utilize voice over if I decided to change
anything for the narrative.
• Another potential approach is to shoot each location as a different
video and do each one of them as a different style/genre. For
example, doing the haunted location as a horror type style. Doing the
Polish bar as a grainy square old video style or doing the sign as that.
• I also may decide to add some fancy title card animations to the
video.
8. Potential techniques to use
• Potential techniques:
Use blur zoom transitions and audio swooshes to merge them
together.
Use foreground of someone or something (e.g., a car) to reveal a
location.
Use leading Lines to draw focus to objects
Use any water to reflect the sun
Flicker effect by cutting footage
Zoom in through title card.
9. Conventions of your chosen format/genre
you are working to
• The genre I am working to in this sense is more of a short informative video in a
voiceover format, in this case it is a planned route of locations in York.
• In this case I believe that the conventions that would apply would be:
• Keep it shoRt (obviously, since the project guidelines state it should be under 2
minuets long, so abiding by this one is most important).
• Keep it snappy (get information across clearly and concisely, leaving room for any
potential other points)
• Keep it visually entertaining (people want constant entertainment when
watching videos, in order to keep them invested I would need
10. Mind map of ideas
[summary of ideas page 1]
Ideas -
Summary
Water Reflecting – water
reflecting from the sun can be a
leading line, it also looks really
good visually and is a type of
shot I would like to include. Visual
Foreground – use
foreground to add
a bit more of a 3
dimensional feel.
Rule of Thirds + symmetry:
enable cross marks to see
points of focus. Try and
align objects on one of
these thirds or more than
one, if 2 + subjects. Also use
symmetry sometimes or
leading lines to subject of
focus.
Mood
Keep the mood
upbeat and
informative
11. Mind map of ideas
[summary of ideas page 1]
Ideas -
Summary
Pace – keep it fast
paced and the shots
cutting frequently,
only really slow down
when addressing
important information
if at all
Editing
Colour Grading – colour grade
to be vibrant and cinematic to
make it look visually pleasing.
Keep it to narrative mood. Can
also be graded differently
depending on location.
Audio
Voice over – use voice
over on video, record
audio in silent
environment (can use
curtains) and deliver
voicer concisely and
reasonably fast paced.
Music – music should be
cool and funky and match
pace of video using
freesound.org
Sounds – add sounds that
are appropriate to visuals
and that keep to the mood
(so do not necessarily have
to be the correct sounds)
Try new effects/methods:
try to experiment a bit, e.g.
using google maps as a zoom
in on map to location and
cut to location, or try adding
some new graphics or
transitions

13. Summary
• 5 opportunities of my ideas
• Reflecting water will look nice and will provide me with a better
incite on how to use water in video.
• I will get to experiment with linking sound with video.
• I will further my understanding of using DSLR’s .
• I will get to test out multiple lenses.
• I will get to film some nice locations that would look good in a
showreel.
14. Summary
• 5 restrictions to my ideas
• If the weather is not correct, I may struggle as I do not have much
opportunity to reshoot scenes.
• Locations may have too many people interrupting shots.
• I may not have the right time frame to attempt.
• The are often train strikes and the train is my mode of transport.
• Do not have a gimble, so shots will need to be kinda still and may be
lack luster as a result.
15. Final idea – rationale
• Why this idea? Why this format? What skills do you have that
support this and what are you looking forward to exploring more.
• My finial Idea is to short quirky locations in York and present them
in a short voiceover format. I plan to keep the video visually
entertaining and fast pace.
• I have chosen this format as I have a decent amount of experience
with making shorter YouTube type videos and am capable of editing
rather fast. .
• The video will be under 2 minutes, I will go to locations mentioned
and film footage on location.
• I am looking forward to getting to experiment with water and
natural light a lot more, as these are subjects that I briefly looked at
over summer. I am also excited to get some experience with the
composition of my shots.
16. Final idea – creative concept
• What do you want to make, reference the look, style and type of project. This could be a synopsis of the
piece and some visual reference points. Reference content and the themes you are wanting to explore
and resources that might help you to achieve your aims.
• My finial Idea is to short quirky locations in York and compile them in a short voiceover
sequence. I plan to keep the video visually entertaining and fast pace, in order to keep to
the short video format.
• The video will be under 2 minutes, I will go to locations mentioned and film footage. The
part which I am most looking forward to isn’t the filming (although that is the most active
part), but rather compiling the footage together and experimenting with linking the sound
and visuals together and exploring the effects I can utilise.
• I envision it being cut to the beat a lot and utilising quite a few graphics rendered in
aftereffects.
• I intend to theme the locations a bit differently depending on what it is the location does,
e.g. shambles would be Harry Potter themed.
• Resources that may help are freesound.com, YouTube and google books.
18. Title of production/production outline
• York’s stupid and magical locations.
• Summary of intended production: My intended production is a
short 2 minuet video with locations of York that are quirky or cool.
It is intended for people of the age groups of 18-24 and as such
should have appropriate music, fast cuts and simple voiceover with
cool infographics and interesting editing. The format is a short
informative video.

Weather: The day I am planning to shoot the weather has 80% chance of rain.
In order to combat this I will be getting the earliest train at 6:41 am and will
arrive at York for 7:15 (which will get me to York for golden hour).
Other information: York minster is undergoing some construction, so I will try
not to film that area.
Total distance is about 0.8 to 0.9miles.
Cost of train tickets: £5.87
Risks: the is some construction in areas along this path, so be careful near said
areas. The is also a chance of rainfall, so make sure equipment is protected
and watch out for slip hazards, plus the cobble street is a trip hazard on
Fossgate. Be carful at the shambles as the is a likely chance of wizardry and
magic.

23. Pre-Production: Visual Planning
• This section is concerned with the visual/creative planning of your
production. This is WHAT you want to make
• You should use this section to develop what is it going to look/sound
like and establish what the visual design is and the desired sequence.
• It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the project before you make it;
it will make filming and production a more streamlined process.
• The following tasks should be part of your visual planning, including:
• Pre-visualisation and concept boards
• Storyboarding
• Shot list
• Flat plans
• Colour plans
• Draft sketches, etc
24. Pre-visualisation/Concept Boards
• Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
• Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
• Presents key moments in your video
• A means to sketch/plan ideas
• Information on colour/lighting
• Defining the “mise-en-scene”
• Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
• Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-hunger-
games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
26. Concept board discussion/explanation
I intend to present the Shambles with a mor
magic harry potter type style, with a Harry
Potter font and some magic visual effects
and magical music.
Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate
is just a funny sign name.
The last time I saw It the
where a lot of pigeons
above it. If the happen to
be some when I go that
will add a lot more to the
shot, as it will have more
movement in the shot.
Fossgate is an area that’s more Pub like, so I
intend to play tavern or pub music to go
along with the visuals.
York minster has a lot
of cyclists, so I may
be able to see some
of them in my shots,
which could make for
good movement. The
statue and sign are
places that I believe
would bee good
shooting location of
things to film at the
minster.
For my intro, I am going to film a bit of the river and
maybe the castle wall, as they are along the way from
the train station to York minster, so this may give anyone
travelling by train a deeper sense of direction and travel
from location to location.
27. Experiment 1
For this experiment I decided to
attempt focusing the camera on an
object in the foreground and then
the subject.
I first focused on the fire
extinguisher and then on my
subject/actor.
I found this to be quite an easy
practical effect of the camera and
will be using this in my final
production, although whether I
keep it or not depends on what
the edit comes out like.
28. Structural breakdown/planning
• Breakdown your project into its basic sections and apply broad visual
and creative ideas to each section.
• You can use this as the master template for your production, then
add more shots/pages, etc to each section when you develop your
full sequenced plan and planned outcomes.
• You should create a slide showing all the sections of the project, then
add a slide for each section with timings, what happens visually and
in terms of audio, page layout aim to have as much specific detail as
possible.
• The structure of the project and method of doing this is dictated by
the type of project.
