This document provides planning details for a digital graphic narrative project. 1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
I am going to be making a children’s book the costs of doing this will effect me very minimally, I am making
this at college so I will not have to pay for any software or devices that I will use in order to make this product
it will be made on a digital platform, there for I will not need to pay for equipment such as computers, printers,
inks, paper or props, as college are providing the computers. However I am going to be using resources I
have bought previous for the project for example my USB stick and computer and software.
However, I do need to get to college so that’s something I will pay for is transport to get here.
Available resources:
The resources that are available to me are provided by college, for example computers, printers, paper,
cameras, and software such as Photoshop. I will not be needing any additional resources other than what
college has available for me.

2. Quantity:
Because of the style and design of my book I think it would be better if it was massed produced.
The story that I have chosen to do is based of Little Red Riding Hood, which is a popular story. This means
that sales may be high and the product may be popular. The style of the book is quite modern and popular
therefore it would be better printing loads of copies of the book. My group of demographics and audience is
also high, therefore the sales of the product may also be high.
Audience and Target Market:
My target audience are children from the ages 3-6 mostly girls my book is aimed at these people because of
the simplicity of the illustrations I have aimed it towards girls because the man character of the book is a little
girl so it will be relatable to them to some extent. The target market for my book is going to be parents as the
parents will be the ones who walk into the shop or go online and buy the book for their children, these parents
are most likely to be belonger’s, because they are mostly likely living in a small city and will respond to
messages that are family or community oriented. And prefer product being made in the UK and that do not
suggest change belonger’s are brand loyal. The social grades will be C2 which are skilled working class,
skilled manual workers.
Quality Factors:
I need to think about the quality of my book to make sure my work is as good as possible to influence the
quality of my work I could spend extra time on it outside of college hours whilst been at home. I have my own
laptop at home which I could use.
Codes of Practice:
The codes of practice apply to agreements under which an author assigns or licenses an interest in the
copyright of a work to a publisher. In the process of writing a book, the codes of practice do not apply to me as
I am not creating a professional project, however if I was there are a number of codes that I would need to
follow and respect in order to do so. The most important thing about the codes is that they are most likely the
financials as they play a huge part in getting the story from a small idea in a mass production of books, these
financials include the sums the publisher pays the author as they produce the book, but in return for these

3. payments the author must produce a high quality book and to a certain time schedule, if the codes of practice
are not followed and are broken the publisher will likely push for its expenditure on the author back as it was a
waste of time and not good enough.
Regulation:
There are lots and lots of regulations surrounding the production of books, as there are with many other
commercial products. Many children’s books fall under the category of toys and games as they include more
than just text and illustrations they could include pop up images these regulations do not apply to my book as
my book does not fall under the category of toys and games. The regulations applicable to my book are the
obscene and publications act and equality act, although my book is suited to meet the requirements, so that
there are no violations that may cause problems. These are regulations surrounding the use of screens and
especially computer screens. The regulations state that for every hour that you use the screen for.
Copyright:
Copyright is the act where you cannot use physical or intellectual property of the copyright holder, for example
I would not be aloud to use a modern copyright owned story in my children’s book, Although I am aloud to use
an old story with no copyright laws or an out-dated one. This is why I am using the story of the little red riding
hood however I am changing it to my own version.. the little red riding hood holds no copyright laws meaning I
can use it as much as I want, and make profit from it, if it was a professional project.

4. Ethical Issues:
Ethical issues are issues surrounding peoples opinions and beliefs, often spiritual cultural and religious.
Ethical issues are applicable to almost everything, as everyone has there own personal opinions and beliefs.
There are ethical issues that I can realise that could potentially be aimed at my story. These include issues
surrounding taking the work and the harm placed on the wolf at the end of the story, However I am re writing
this so that my version of the story includes a bear instead of a wolf, the bear gets shot at the end. It is
common for traditional tales used in children’s books to have light gender stereotypes, such as a large strong
man saving the typical girls, These could cause ethical issues as gender stereotypes are wrong for obvious
reasons.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

11. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
