This document outlines the planning and considerations for a digital graphic narrative project. It includes sections on costs, available resources, quantity, audience, quality factors, codes of practice, regulation, copyright, ethical issues, resources, production schedule, and health and safety. The student considers budget, equipment, timelines, audience, legal requirements, and risks to complete the project on time and within guidelines.

1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
The costs that may be involved in this project would be the equipment that I require, such as using
Photoshop. I may also use a camera for some of my book therefor I could use my own I bought or hire one
from college. If I were to use photography in my book then the costs would be transport, working out the costs
of how much it would cost to get to the location I was planning on shooting.
Available resources:
For my project I will use the Macs, which have Photoshop on, and other helpful resources such as the internet
where I can get ideas from and make them into my own. The internet also allows me to look at existing books
and take techniques from there. I can use cameras if I want to take my own images and edit them.

2. Quantity:
I would make around 250 copies and sell them in England. If my book was to be very successful I would make
a lot more copies and sell them in other countries such as the USA.
Audience and Target Market:
My book is targeting both genders of an age around 5-11. The class my book is aimed at any class that it
interests. Its important that my book must interest the parents too as they would be the buyers and possibly
reading the book to their child.
Quality Factors:
To ensure that my work is as good as possible I will keep checking over it and ask others in the class to look
over my work and give me feedback so I know what can be improved and what works well. I will spend my
time wisely, for example not get distracted, as time is limited and avoid being absent. In spare time I will do
more work so I can get it to the best I know I can do. I have to be wise with my time and only spend limited
time on each page, as there is only two weeks.
Codes of Practice:
I need to ensure that the quality of work is good, therefor completed and up to my expectation of what I
wanted it to be like and it is completed in the time given, two weeks. I must make sure that my book fits legal
requirements, therefor no bad language, inappropriate images that may upset others. The publishing contract
must be kept clear, and the contract should be clear about ownership of the copyright. The publisher should
be aware of the author’s moral rights and be willing to take any opportunity to explain the terms of the contract
and the reasons for each provision. Where appropriate the publisher must give the author a proper
opportunity to share in the success of the work. The publisher must not cancel a contract without good and
proper reason such as standard and quality, defamation or illegality.

3. Regulation:
I must ensure that my book is not harmful to children. For example its important that the edges of the book are
rounded not sharp so children couldn’t cut themselves. They need to be safe, however its also important that
parents ensure it’s kept in a safe place, not somewhere the child may trip over it for example. Another
consideration that may be harm could be any pop out pictures that I include.
Copyright:
It’s important that I do not use a story that has already been created, and the design but be completely
manipulated so it doesn’t look anything like the original image. For example I am roto scoping my images and
manipulating them to my own designs.
Ethical Issues:
I must ensure that my book is decency; it gives a good representation and does not discriminate against any
religion, gender, class, age and disability. I am limited to what I can include my work therefor I must ensure
there is a good moral at the end. I must ensure my book is respectable and cultural sensitivity.

4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
I will start and complete the background for my pages.
Some backgrounds will be different to others.
Session 2:
Begin creating other creatures in water.

6. Concentrate on Nessie and crimson as they are most important.
Session 3:

11. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Split water.
Keep bottled water in your bag away from equipment and
drink away from computers.
Trip over chairs/tables/bags.
Keep working environment clear and tidy to prevent
accidents. Bags under or on top of desks.
